About The Church Mouse

The Church Mouse in Chester-le-Street is a country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character with real log fires, fine wines and cask ales.

The Church Mouse Description

The mining community of Chester Moor has been in need of refreshment since the first colliery opened in 1889, with over 700 men and boys working in the pits by 1940. Following the closure of the final colliery in the 1960's, The Church Mouse now welcomes locals and travellers making the journey between Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham and Sunderland.
A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

This is our regular. Never had a bad meal here. Food is fab. I recommend the sharing Sunday lunch trio platter and the sharing desert platter. Best of both worlds haha. Not expensive and all the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Love this place.

User

Popped in yesterday for an early tea (4pm) the 2&3 course menu seemed good value, but we opted from the main menu. Hubby had a satisfying turkey & sage pie with veg and I had the most yummy vegetarian dish - Kale & Cauliflower Couscous Salad with Roasted Butternut Squash, Sweet Potato, Broccoli, Pomegranate, Pumpkin Seeds, Spring Onion, Ginger & Pineapple...delicious!

User

Me and my partner went last night food was amazing. Could of easily had two of everything. Staff vary friendly. We will most defiantly be coming back very soon. X

User

Lovely pub, fab food and friendly staff. Went today with a friend and my young dog. Staff were brilliant, the service was great and they made a fuss of my dog which he loved! He’s still getting used to going in different pubs, and being young and boisterous he can have the odd howl and cry which the staff and other guests in the bar area didn’t seem to mind, and they even came to give him attention. Just what a dog friendly pub should be like. Will be back again very soon!

User

Lovely food for my birthday and made even better with the service from Vicky. She was amazing, made us feel really welcome like we were regulars and even wrote happy birthday on the receipt! Would recommend it just for the service

User

Just been for a delicious meal as always. Love the chicken and thyme pie and my husband had the steak and mushroom pie. Both were gorgeous, piping hot with tasty chips and veg. Had my first taste of pink gin too - could get used to that!!! Trio of ice cream to share and all extremely pleasantly and efficiently served by Alex who is happy in her role. Thanks all for a lovely evening

User

As this was my husband and I first visit we would highly recommend the Church Mouse the atmosphere was great and the staff were very friendly and welcoming nothing was a bother for them and they gave you plenty of time to choose from the menu, other places tend to want you in and out as quick as possible but not this place we will be back in the new year

User

2nd time I’ve been both times meal and service excellent 5 star 🌟 chefs fantastic service staff fantastic and very well priced

Will definitely be going again

👍

User

I loved the choices on the vegan menu in this lovely cosy pub. The meal matched high expectations and the service was excellent. I was disappointed that they had no non-dairy milk. So I couldn’t finish my meal with a latte, hence 4 stars.

User

We were at the restaurant Christmas Day for lunch there was 11 family members from 7 years to 89 we were extremely well looked after by all the staff who remained cheerful and pleasant throughout our visit which having worked in retail for many many years can be daunting especially on days like Chatmas day food was excellent thanks to all the kitchen staff and the whole atmosphere was calm and relaxed our table gave us plenty room to come and go without disturbing any other dinners of which there was many and I feel that was what made the day not being squashed in like sardines as we have at other venues where obviously profit was the main thing loved it loved made a very special family day which so very important tthank you

User

Really disappointed. ordered beef roast... And for the price expected much better... Beef was average, veg was soggy and tasted like frozen veg and served luke warm.... :( creme brule was ok but cold rather than the room temperature/warm youd expect.

User

Staff are very unfriendly, the only thing stopping me giving a 1 star review is the great setting..........

User

Nice inside and friendly staff, waited over half an hour for main course and we were only having a sandwich which we found really dry. We will not be returning.

User

Generally a nice pub and we come here often. The food is decent and the staff are friendly. However the last few times we have been the service has been appalling.

Today has been the icing on the cake and I think it will be a while before we go back again. Barely a soul in the place. We chose a table in an area where there was only us (2 adults and 1 child). A maximum of 2 other tables in our area were occupied during the duration of our visit.

We arrived around 1:20pm. Took a while for someone to take our order, around 1:45pm. Took until 2:30pm for starters to arrive. Was after 3pm when mains arrived. Didn't stop for pudding as dreaded to think how long it would take. We had a very well behaved but very hungry and fed up 5 year old with us.

Don't know if it was a lack of kitchen staff or a lack of serving/bar staff but it was absolutely abysmal.

User

Called in tonight but to be truthful was very disappointed. We found a table which was dirty, there was food & crayons on the floor so we moved. Sat at a different table which we discovered was also dirty, when my sons t-shirt stuck to the edge of the table! Which we ended up cleaning ourselves. The service was slow. Some if our order didn’t arrive so reminded the staff twice!! Asked for mayonnaise and extra drinks, the drinks eventually arrived but had to ask another member of staff for the mayonnaise, she brought 1 tiny pot over for 3 of us. Have to say we won’t be returning in a hurry

User

£20 for fillet steak which was full of sinuew and reallly tough paid the same price at Deere the manor hotel which was far better change your butcher

User

Very poor dining experience. Food tasteless and mine not cooked. A vegetable tart, still cold and vegetables hard, pastry inedible. Service very slow, nearly an hour and half to wait before starters appeared. One of us had to get up and go to the bar himself for a drink as waitresses invisible for prolonged periods. My impression with my food is that is is bought in and heated, if cooked on site then the chef needs to go back to college. We will not return, I certainly can not recommend this as in any way a good dining experience.

User

Only giving one star because zero isn’t an option. We waited for 40 minutes today then chased up our order. Two of our party were served. Some time later my husband’s roast arrived - missing various items and without the extra side he’d requested. A further complaint resulted in some more items coming to the table, begrudgingly delivered by an obviously flustered member of staff. By this time my nephew and father-in-law had finished their meals, my mother-in-law and I were still waiting. A further complaint eventually got us served. The duty manager was eventually located and sent to us, and the attitude with which she handled our complaint was appalling. We were eventually offered a refund, but the flip side of that is that my disabled, pensioner in-laws were told they were not welcome to return! For raising a perfectly legitimate complaint about frankly appalling service! First and last visit, will not return and would not recommend to anyone. A shame, as the food itself was decent when it eventually arrived.

User

Disappointing visit. Place was like a vets waiting room dogs barking ughhh starter was OK .steak sandwich was really bad steak was tough I left it all. Waitress asked if food was OK on clearing plates .when answers no she responded oh really sorry about that ...won't be returning. Disgusting. ..
