had my 1st ever afternoon tea here with my daughter and daughter in law. we had a table booked but we were late, however, this was no problem. it was very busy, the staff were lovely and helpful and the sandwiches and cakes were amazing, especially the cheese scones. i would definitely recommend this place and hope to be back soon!!

User

Went for first time today for a hen do. Had afternoon tea and was delicious. Staff were lovely and very attentive, will be back to try one of the milkshakes I saw as they looked amazing!

Visited the Great British Cupcakery Sunday 29th July they are in the process of a refurbishment and wow it’s looking fantastic and isn’t fully completed what a transformation. As usual service was of a very high standard. I selected Caramel Cheesecake (delicious) along with excellent quality coffee.

Well worth a visit.

The Great British Cupcakery is my favourite place in the north east to go for cake - and I’ve tried everywhere! Since it’s renovation it’s more beautiful than ever, it feels like you are walking into another world. Everything is beautiful and a lot of thought has gone into it. The cakes are absolutely divine too, it’s extremely difficult to choose one so we decided to each get something different and have a bit of each. Personally, I thought that the red velvet brownie cake was the best but they were all moist, full of flavour and they look almost too good to eat. Oh, they use paper straws too, extra points from us. I would recommend a visit if you haven’t tried it before (if you’ve been you will already be a fan), you will definitely not be disappointed. 10/10 from us.

User

Thankyou so much for my Daughters graduation cakes, they were absolutely gorgeous ! I should have ordered more , I would highly recommend and will definitely order again!

User

Thank you so much for our absolutely stunning and delicious wedding cake!

We had a three tier naked cake with different flavours on each tier, complete with matching pink flamingos. We absolutely adored it - it was exactly what we wanted!

We would recommend the Great British Cupcakery to anyone! Brilliant service from start to finish and the cake was just out of this world.

Thank you so so so much.

Service was really good & friendly . Staff happy & obliging . raspberry scone with lots of jam & cream was lush . So well done to all . Love the new look

User

Second time I’ve been here and have loved it both times. Today was really busy but the staff were on top of it and the food was delicious. There was a bit of a mix up with one of the sandwiches but it was dealt with swiftly. I can’t wait to go again

User

Our beautiful wedding cake was exactly what we wanted! The cake tasting was great too! Thank you so so much for everything, can not recommend this place more x

User

I ordered a 70th celebration cake with less than 2 weeks to go until the big day. The Great British Cupcakery fitted me in no problem. The cake was a showstopper and tasted amazing. I would have no hesitation buying a celebration cake from this shop again. Thank you very much.

User

Always very busy, which is a good indication of how popular this place is. The downside is that its often hard to find a seat. The staff work hard and always look under pressure. Cakes and milkshakes are excellent so well worth a visit.

User

After coming to Great British Cupcakery a few times for sweet treats, it was a no brainer to have them make our wedding cake.

I had an idea in mind that I wanted and after watching their amazing ones on their Instagram page I knew we were in good hands.

I had plenty of flavours to chose from and I sent images of the style I liked and left the rest up to the guys!

My cake was amazing fit our wedding theme so well and tasted amazing.

So thanks so much for an amazing wedding cake team.

We will continue to return again and again

Yep, it’s basically just sandwiches & cupcakes, but they’re good ‘uns! Lovely soft fresh bread, perfect crispy cooked bacon, good tea & scones. Daughter had a freakshake, looked the business and tasted great! Staff are really helpful, nothing is a problem. One thing to improve on.....bigger teapots please!

User

staff not very helpful, and bitching behind mine and my party of 14 people backs. when asked them if there was a problem, was told there wasnt. arrived for our table booking, and the table was being used, and staff said they cant ask customers to leave. i understand that, but why say you can take a booking when you clearly didnt have the space to cater for. not very child/wheelchair friendly, toilet downstairs and there is only 1 toilet available. cant fault food though, them scones were unreal.

User

Very ordinary afternoon tea, overpriced. Service not good as not enough staff to cover amount of tables being used. Asked previous day for candles or something to celebrate my dAughters 30th birthday, which did not happen. Ok for a piece of cake and milkshake or shopping but not for afternoon tea. Should have a choice for what they charge.

User

I don't understand the hype.

I have been here twice now. The first time we ordered 2 milshakes, and 2 sandwiches. The milshakes were ok, nice to have cake on top etc, but all the additional bits are just wasted (stuff stuck to the side of the glass). Tasted more of milk than the flavour. Sandwiches were ridiculously thick cut bread.

Second time we had sandwiches again, still the same ridiculously thick bread with a measly amount of fillings for all 4 of us. Personally I had the Ham and Cheese - The cheese was like eating hard cream - You can't use a mild cheese in such a large sandwich, and the sandwich was too thick to begin with.

As for the cakes - We ordered 5 different cakes to take away. Raspberry, Salted caramel, vanilla chocolate, a green one for kids and something else I can't remember.

They just weren't great at all.4 of them came on a chocolate sponge base which had little cocoa in. the toppings themselves were not flavoursome. The only raspberry flavour on the entire cake was a tiny amount of freeze dried raspberry -the icing was just coloured red.

The same goes for the other cakes - coloured icing, and sprinkled with a small amount of flavour.

Not particularly interested in going back. Might be tempted by the Afternoon Tea, but it seems it's just a sandwich and a few 1/4s of cake cut up on a stand and charged more for.

User

Came in for the first time and we smiled at the staff but they ignored us. They weren’t very helpful and took a while for them to clean our table up. Staff didn’t seem bothered and chatted behind the counter the majority of the time. I had a sandwich and a milkshake, the sandwich came on very thick bread with hardly any filling, found it difficult to eat! Second time going in, hoping it was going to be better service but we were disappointed again. Staff took ages to clean table and weren’t very attentive. Can’t fault some of the cakes but the service needs to improve!!!

User

So after looking at this place on facebook and online for months now, i decided to to treat my 2 daughters to a special morning tea today - boy were we disappointed. First off the welcome was poor - actually it was non existent even after we smiled and said hi to the girl behind the counter. Then we took a seat and were disappointed at the menu style (yeah yeah i know that that sounds lame but some lovely pics of their offerings would have been nice to see). My daughter was really looking forward to the large cookies and cream shake however this was not available and the only ones available were raspberry, strawberry, unicorn or a huge chocolate waffle one - this was disappointing. So we moved on and asked if we could please have 2 plain chocolate milkshakes and were told no. Flat out no - no reason just NO. Considering it's really just a glass with milk and chocolate sauce and ice cream, i couldnt see why this was not possible. OK moving on again we settled for 3 hot chocolates and none of us drank them. We got a mason jar of luke warm milk with gritty powder in and that was it. it was horrible. I was going to complain however in all honestly i didnt see the point as there was nothing else my daughters wanted. We also bought some brownie slices and a slice of banana cake which i requested to have warmed with butter........this didnt happen neither.

So with a bill of £20, half eaten food and really poor drinks we headed back up the hill to get food/drink elsewhere to salvage the mornings bad experience.

In a nutshell i realise that you cant cater for everyone all of the time, however a basic milkshake is nothing special nor unrealistic for a milkshake place to make, and a hot chocolate needs to be made properly to avoid the chalky powdery gritty taste..........

We wont be back and wont be recommending :(

I’ve been here numerous times and always thought it was lovely but I went yesterday for a pre-booked baby shower and it was a massive let down. I’d organised everything in October and rang them prior to the day asking if we could leave items on the table as a surprise but upon our arrival they neglected to put the balloon on the table and I had to ask where it was, that was the focus of the table so the mother to be knew we’d surprised her. Then we had an accident where we dropped a scone on the floor, no one came over to help, instead they looked at us and turned their backs and stood chatting. Yes it was our fault but they never brought over a cloth or napkins to clean up, nothing. We had to get up to get some napkins and we had to get up to ask them to refill our teapots, twice. One of the waitresses came over once to see if we were ok but then we sat for ages with empty teapots and our dirty dishes on the table, we even had to ask them to take them away. All in all I was very disappointed in the service yesterday and I doubt I’ll be back again!
