About The Ivy House

The Ivy House. A local pub not just for local people.

The Ivy House Description

At the Ivy House we do things a little differently. For us it is all about choice. Yes, we sell Fosters, John Smiths and Smirnoff but we also sell Brooklyn, an eclectic range of cask and craft beers and a diverse choice of spirits. We don't want you to sit in a pub where Sky Sports News is constantly on and Dizzie Stryder is waxing about his crib over a "heavy" bass line. We want you to enjoy a comfortable vibe where you can listen to good tunes and feel relaxed.
We don't have a microwave. Not one. We don't do frozen. We cook from scratch. Our own dough. Our own buns. Our pizzas and burgers are as fresh as it gets and all made right in front of you.
Come in and see for yourself.

Went for a quiet pint on new years eve, only to find to my horror people singing and dancing and enjoying the free food. I decided to stop as I was sure it would be full of like minded miserable twats soon, but unfortunately the party people stayed all night.

I returned the next day and it was just the same, crammed to the rafters. Once again people dancing and singing along, but this time to the free live band they had provided. They only had about 8 bar staff on and it took about 2 minutes till a was eventually served as their was to many fine ales to choose from.

Went for Sunday lunch (mothers day) food was amazing and absolutely huge portions the 4 of us were well pleased with it and the ladies received a gift

Of a candle in a jar, which was a lovely gesture. We will be back, really enjoyed it.

We were very impressed. We were accompanied by our Australian daughter in law, her Irish friend and our very large German Shepherd. The atmosphere was very welcoming and within minutes presented with menus and our GS with a bowl of water and a doggie treat - he could have doggie beer too! The menu was mainly burgers and pizzas, which we knew before we visited, however ALL handmade and certainly sounded very tasty. Dishes chosen it was off to the bar to order- daughter in law offered to buy the drinks, there were lots of small independent brewery ales on offer. Personally I very rarely drink ale but chose to try 'Oracle' and very glad I did. There were cocktails and various Gins to choose from - paradise! Daughter returned to the table to tell us 'the drinks were free' apparently there's a 'button' which when pressed, a bit like a fruit machine, spins and if you hit at the right time your drinks are free!!! Food was very tasty and served by a delightful young lady. We all enjoyed our visit, including GS, he was fed numerous treats. The ambiance, the food, the drinks and the service were all superb. Only recently moved into this part of Sunderland and have decided The Ivy House is definitely going to be our local. Well done!

User

Was visiting my in laws in Sunderland with my mate and on the last day, stopped into The Ivy House for an early dinner before our flight. My in laws live a short distance away and I was surprised when they said this establishment allows dogs! So they brought their dog along and we ordered 3 burgers and a curry. One burger was mistakenly brought out with chicken rather than beef but straight away the lovely waitress fessed up to the kitchens error and said we could keep the incorrect order and they would also bring out the correct order! Then I went to buy 2 beers and a juice at the bar and as it was happy hour, got to press this red buzzer which skipped through options on a screen which would say how much I would pay for the drinks. To my surprise, it landed on 'free' so I got the entire round for free! The food came out and it was all lovely, especially the wedges served with the burgers. They even gave my friend another free juice because of the error with her burger order. All in all, a great experience, friendly staff, great tunes playing in the background and dog friendly. It's a shame I live in Australia as I would make this my local!! Thanks again 😊👍🏻

Visited today with my wife for the first time in years.

Was welcomed by a warm smile from the bar staff

Looked at the menu and could not believe the prices for Sunday lunch with a variety of meats on offer including roast beef and pulled pork, I elected for the roast beef and the wife pulled pork, and wow what a portion size ! The food was well presented and the quantity was just way too much ! The gravy was very moreish ! So we asked for more and it was not a problem.

Great service, great choice and great price !

This is what pub food should all be about !

Will definitely be back !

User

Lovely place - we go for Sunday lunch every few weeks and it’s always great :)

User

I rarely review on any site, but I should have done this ages ago. Absolutely love this pub, especially for food. Prices are brilliant and you get great quality along with. I have had lunch here quite a few times and especially love the meatball sub after trying it yesterday, and the staff are always welcoming and cheery.

If you want a pleasant lunch or a few drinks, give it a go, I doubt anyone would be disappointed.

User

Great place excellent range of beers food excellent especially the pizza and the new afternoon 1/2 pizza deal is great value for money

Give it a try you won't be disappointed

User

Been to the Ivy House numerous times for gigs and food and always loved it.

First time I've took my dog and was pretty nervous as he has never been inside a pub before and I was unsure how he would react as he has anxiety issues.

However upon entering myself and a friend got our drinks when a staff member approached and asked if Harvey wanted water and treats. Harvey became very comfortable and took a shine to the staff member (sorry I didnt catch your name) and made himself at home.

Pleased to say all involved loved it and I'm very happy known I can go somewhere where Harvey will feel comfortable.

Well done Ivyhouse!

Been coming to the Ivy House for about 25 years. Haven’t been in a lot over the last couple of years, but have started frequenting this pub more recently it’s dog friendly and we have a 6 month old puppy now. Staff are all excellent, food is brilliant too. We will definitely be coming in more regularly from now on!

User

A very friendly and welcoming pub, it has an excellent choice of beers wines and spirits not to mention brilliant cocktails.

The food is a delight on the tastebuds.

They also lay on fantastic live entertainment.

This pub is well worth a visit for a bite to eat or a full on session.

User

Went last night with my family to celebrate my brother’s birthday. Took my dog with me and we all had a fab time and participated in the pub quiz... didn’t win! Could only have the potato wedges but they have informed me they are serving vegan food from next week

User

Very nice pub, but i dont feel the need of the staff coming up to me twice at my table asking for iD after i had been to the bar when they had already asked me for ID (for the second time)

User

Nice, traditional real ale pub (CAMRA) with good food.

User

Always enjoyed the Ivy, it was my old haunt when I started drinking about 1980 and it it still as good today as ever. A tadge on the expensive side but decor is great. The atmosphere when full especially on a bank holiday cannot be matched anywhere else in the town. Friendly staff and great food. One of Sunderland premier pubs. Cheers

User

Staff were lovely...food not so much. The garlic bread was like a giant crisp with no flavour. Potatoto wedges tasted like they had been cooked in old oil.

User

I used to go to the ivy years ago and it's a nice stop over for us on the way to the match. It's still a great pub however the beer prices let it down when plenty off pubs near by are cheaper. I don't mind paying higher prices but I struggle to see why the prices are so high for that pub and area. Worth a visit though
