Went on Thursday with Husband, Daughter and the two grandsons. We all had the carvery which is really nice and good value for Money. The boys obviously love the limitless drinks and ice cream ( not that we let them over do it). Lisa our waitress for the evening was a lovely friendly lady who made sure we had all we needed and that the table was cleared promptly. The Shire Horse is our family favourite place and the boys especially love going there. It's nice and family friendly and we love the new refurbishment too. :-)

Just been tonight with the family for Mother’s Day! First time I’ve been (rest of family have been before) and I was pleasantly surprised! Whilst busy (naturally) there was not a ridiculous wait time, the staff were attentive and nothing was too much hassle, happy to make swaps with food (as a slimming world member and consultant this place is great for food optimising!!) Carvery was fab, veggies cooked great and fresh! The meat... I had turkey and beef.... was to die for!! I will definitely come again.... many thanks to Natalie and Lisa (our server) for being very welcoming and answering all my questions! X

Brought the family last night (28 august) for the wife's birthday. As always a fab meal with very good service. Even a candle in my wife's dessert. Never had a bad meal here and even my kids clear their plate. Special mention to our server lady with the short blonde hair. Very pleasant indeed. Thank you.

User

Amazing service!!! Been for a carvery which was huge and delicious and the Wednesday curry night was fresh and lovely! Drinks cheap and good range. Can't wait to go back for steak night on Saturday! Michael was amazing remembered who we were and was extremely friendly!!!

User

We visited early evening had a carvery which as always was very good, we are regular visitors to this pub. However although the pub has had a recent refit and looks very smart and clean we were very dissapointed that the character of the place has gone with the refit !!. We used to enjoy the historic pictures of the local area they had on the walls which sadly have all been replaced by pictures with little or no character which we feel takes something away from the charm of the place didnt feel the same somehow

So last night i decided to take my mam to the shire horse for tea. The last time went for food here was 2 years ago and the food wasnt nice at all and decided we woudnt be back. So since its had a refurbishment and under new management i thought al give it a second chance. Safe to say im glad i decided to do so. My mam had carvery which she loves. 2 years ago the cavery veg was cold roasties soggy and meat cut thin as paper this time round new veg which was hot roasties cooked perfect and meat cut thick to standard to what we payed happy mother. Then my turn i picked the carnivore burger one of the most expensive item on then menu to see if its worth its money with a side off piri piri chicken wings so burger came out and whoa what a burger u get 1 steak burger with a thick slice of each meat off the cavery and a portion of stuffing inside a gaint Yorkshire with pigs of blankets on top OMG its worth the money like i all most didnt finish it. 9/10 reason not 10/10 needs a runny sauce and not mustard mayo but still great food the piri piri wings i love nandos and the wings had my mouth on fire just what i like as i have hot sauce at nandos. So overall i can now say that i will definitely be back again and recommend the shire horse for food. Keep up the work

My husband and I were shopping in Killingworth so thought we’d give the pub a go as we’d never been before, we’re definitely glad we did. We both ordered the Yorkshire pud wraps, which were huge and came with a portion of chips, peas and pigs in blanket. They were stuffed with gammon, turkey and beef and had a good amount of vegetables in too. The only things I could complain about is that we were asked if we’d like pigs in blankets - slightly confusing as the menu states they are served with these but said yes anyway, only for them to arrive with an extra portion of pigs in blankets, which we were charged for and they were served like warm! We also asked for no parsnips but were given our wraps with parsnips so not overly happy as neither of us like them but they were easily took out so not a huge deal. Finally, the beef was slightly fatty and chewy, but again easily pulled out.

Overall it was a nice meal at a reasonable price, and it’s nice to see a pub that actually serves homemade food rather than microwave rubbish so if we’re over that way again I’d say we’d probably go back.

User

We had the new yorkshire wrap, whilst it was substantial and worth the cost it was a little dry and would have benefited from having some gravy, would have asked for some but no one came to check if our meals were OK and the queue was long at the bar with a manager wandering around who could learn how to smile once in a while an as we did not want to holler at any staff member or allow our meal to get cold we put up with it. The pigs in blankets were very greasy and the bacon did not taste very fresh and cant understand the mushy peas addition as they do not go with a roast at the best of times. There is still room for improvement with this dish. I did attempt to put this review on the website but have not heard back, I was given no receipt when paying but I do have a photo of my 'dry' dish if required.

User

Loverly new carvery.

pleasant new decor.

First visit since new changes and new management.

Very Unhappy and feel disappointed with noise level from a family sat four tables away with their children and mobile phones. My mum and myself left not wanting to return after deciding to leave my children at home and sit away from the toilets and majority of families. I Would have expressed this when in earlier tonight but my mother did not want to or cause a fuss so we changed our cake order to a cake a way which was nice but not we had originally went for.

User

Went down tonight (Monday) for tea. My wife had the carvery but had to send it back (it was cold). They zapped it in the microwave but carried on serving cold food to others. Waited 15 minutes for dessert (it didn't come). Neither were our plates cleared. Asked the bar staff if they could get our desserts and clear the table. another 15 minutes went by ..... nothing. Finally I spoke to another member of staff and eventually we got some attention. Considering the place was nearly empty you would expect better service.

User

Very slow service, much slower even than the 30 minutes we were told. To their credit we were given a voucher which was worth more than the food we bought-but to use it we would need to go back! When the food came it really wasn’t worth the wait. Dry over cooked roast potatoes and the rest of the food had no flavour. Had to use extra gravy to add some moisture as it was so dry. It’s in a convenient spot so I’ve given it the benefit of the doubt in the past. I’ll think twice before going again.

User

Usually very good. Think we caught them on a bad night. No cutlery set out. Carvery really poor. Beef very tuff. Left most of it. Wasn’t asked how our meal was going. Gave up trying to catch someone to complain to without making a fuss

User

Thought i would give it another try but to be honest the food is still the same. Wont be going back to eat there had a rump steak which was more like a sausage, spoon full of peas one small mushroom and half a overcooked tomato with a jacket spud all of which were Luke warm sorry but the decor might have changed but the food has not and very expensive for what you get

User

I ordered the carvery gammon bap Saturday, opened inside one small slice of gammon, didn't even cover base of the bun. When we asked at the carvery for abit more the guy placed half a slice inside which most of it was fat! Disappointed 😔

User

I attended breakfast with santa on sat 9th December. What a huge disappointment. Unlike previous years santa was not in his grotto he was just sat in the corner of the pub. The gift my 2year old recieved from Santa was dreadful for the price compared to what his older sister got for the same price. Neither of which were wrapped. Huge disappointment to children. We waited about 40mins for our breakfast and it wasnt the slightest bit busy. I had to ask twice for a drink as it was forgotton about. Santa then left the pub while we were halfway through eating. I would have expected him to stay until the end.

Not impressed with this year. Dont think i would book again huge disappointment.

User

Well what can I say about the Shire Horse at Killingworth, I got a carvery and to begin the roast potatoes were lukewarm and dried out, the turkey skin was like a used mud flap on a bmx, the stuffing was just awful looked like a burst blister with the skin just healing, the Yorkshire puddings were dry as a bone and had the resemblance of my dogs ballonknot. I will say that the carrots were tasty but that's about it. My daughter got what was suppose to be a "steak burger" and it came out in a stale, microwaved bread bun which could probably break a window if thrown hard enough, the colsaw looked like a mashed up veggy burger. Thought we might get a cake to take away but but soon had second thought when we had clapped eyes on the millionaires shortbread cake which looked like a dried up Yorkshire pudding just plopped on the top of a dropped sponge cake. Was not worth the price and will not be going back.

User

We went for the curry night but only one curry available. Then ordered pudding which as advatised served hot or cold but they could not serve it cold so I cancelled the one from four ordered got a refund for one pudding but had still paid for the other three but they cancelled them tow ended up waiting for 45 mins for puddings. They advertise a curry night and have no curry and advertise pudding served hot or cold and can’t do it, won’t be back or recommend
