What is Dermaplaning?
The dermaplaning procedure is much simpler than it might sound! This painless treatment involves a sterile and gentle scalpel to take off surface debris, dirt, oil, dead skin cells and even “peach fuzz” (vellus hair).
... Dermaplaning removes the top layer of skin, which triggers collagen production, leading to firmer and smoother skin. The collagen will also help heal acne scars and discoloration.
Benefits of Dermaplaning for Acne Scars
Dermaplaning is great for getting rid of those stubborn acne scars, and offers a variety of benefits:
Non-surgical More gentle than microdermabrasion (great for sensitive skin!) Minimal redness Deeply exfoliating Does not cause trauma to the skin, like some other procedures Increases product absorption Minimizes the appearance of pores Removes dry, dead skin cells on the surface layer (a.k.a. the stratum corneum) Stimulates circulation at the blood and lymph level (to help with healing) Improves elasticity and texture of the skin Reduces hyperpigmentation, acne scars and evens skin tone
Precautions of Dermaplaning for Acne Scars
While dermaplaning can help reduce the appearance of acne scars, it is not advised for those with active acne and/or frequent breakouts. The procedure can end up leading to over activity in sebaceous glands in these patients, leading to excess oil, and as a result, breakouts. Those with very sensitive skin conditions (such as rosacea) should also consult an esthetician before treatment to ensure dermaplaning is safe.
Common contraindications for dermaplaning:
Active acne (grade 3 or 4) Diabetes (uncontrolled, not under medical supervision) Blood thinners Tendency towards keloid scarring Recent treatments, including: laser, chemical peels, plastic surgery, Botox and Fuller microdermabrasion (on average 2-3 weeks post treatment. Certain medications that thin the skin (i.e. Retin A and Accutane) Aftercare Treatment
Proper post care is extremely important in helping your skin heal at dermaplaning:
Do not wash your face for 12 hours post-treatment Avoid the sun, heat or exercising for 48 hours—increasing the body temperature can cause irritation (and possibly injury) to the fresh skin Wear sunscreen and moisturiser daily . Occasional stinging, redness and/or itching can occur during the first 24 hours, post-treatment. A moisturizer and/or calming serum is recommended to alleviate these sensations. Refrain from picking, peeling and/or scratching—you may tear the skin surface causing a wound (and preventing normal healing).
A peel 10-14 days (post treatment) is an effective treatment used in conjunction with dermaplaning to help slough any skin left . Dermaplaning for acne scars has proven to be effective, and leaves you skin feeling fresh and smooth. It is gentler than other skin treatments, which is great for those with sensitive skin.
