About Tynemouth Priory And Castle

Tynemouth Castle and Priory

Tynemouth Priory And Castle Description

Tynemouth Castle and Priory on the coast of North East England was once one of the largest fortified areas in England. Overlooking the North Sea and the River Tyne, it dominates the headland. With its 2000 year history and beautiful views it is the perfect location for a family fun day out.
The interactive 'Life in the Stronghold' exhibition takes you on an exciting journey. It tells the story of the site from its original beginnings as an Anglo-Saxon settlement, an Anglican monastery, a royal castle, artillery fort and a coastal defence. The newly refurbished battery gun was designed to defend the Tyne in the First and Second World Wars and can be explored.

Our wonderful little 15th century chapel is the only part of the priory church to survive intact.
It has been known as the Percy Chantry since 1907 when a historian noticed the arms and emblem of this powerful, northern family appear in the decorative bosses – but it is now thought the patron is likely to have been Prior John Langton whose initials appear carved in the ceiling.
In 1810, during the Napoleonic wars, the chapel was converted into a magazine for storing ammunitio...n.. Prior Langton couldn’t have predicted that back when it was built in the 1470s!
Given back to the parish in 1850, Newcastle architect John Dobson restored the chapel to its former glory, including the addition of the gorgeous starry sky painted on the vault.
On a sunny day like this the light passing through the stained glass casts beautiful patterns across the walls. Come and see for yourself ☀️

Did you know that the Vikings invaded the Saxon monastery which occupied our headland several times throughout the ninth and tenth centuries?
It is rumoured that the first time the Vikings invaded there was a terrible storm and only one Viking, named Olaf, survived. He was welcomed by the monks at the priory and stayed here to live as a monk. When the Vikings invaded again a few years later, Olaf went to tell his fellow Vikings that the monks were friendly. A permanent friendship was not formed.. the wooden monastery suffered terribly from Viking raids and is thought to have been destroyed and briefly occupied by the invaders in 875.

Went to my brothers seat. Was very windy. But was upset to see someone had took my sister in laws vase that she had put there to put flowers in. She had secured it to seat but some one had still managed to take it xx

Unforgettable experience :), despite the bad weather the place is very majestic with stunning views and scenery overlooking the sea.Lots of history from different centuries and good value for money. I would definitely recommend sightseeing. :)

Superb evening spent listening to corn shed sisters followed by elbow. Very well organised and smooth running event. It's a shame everyone couldn't have hit the bins with their empty cans at the end of the night.

User

Loved this visit, been away for over 30 years. Would have loved to have stayed longer, but was on a tight schedule. If you visit, give yourself a couple of hours, sitting in the grounds is amazing trying to imagine this place 950 years ago.

Had a fabulous weekend at Mouth of Tyne Festival in Tynemouth Priory. Elbow brilluant on Thursday, Tom Odell ok on Saturday & Roachford Billie 'is a Geordie' Ocean brilliant on Sunday. Only downside is I think specific marking should be laid out to guide you to the loos so once it is filled up you don't have to weadle your way in front of people to get back to your pitch.

User

Lovely views . We had 2 year old in buggy so not so easy to negotiate site. Entrance awkward too as tight going in to buy ticket to discover main gate needed opening for us. Helpful staff on duty. Beautiful. Well worth visit. We'll come again sans grand child.
