Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade

About Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade

The TVLB is a voluntary shore-based Coastal Rescue Team operating from our unique Watch House Museum based on the north side of the mouth of the River Tyne

Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade Description

The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade is a voluntary shore based coastal rescue service founded in 1864. We are a Declared Facility to HM Coastguard for Rope Rescue, Coastal Search and Rescue and one of the last remaining trained teams for Ship to Shore Breeches Buoy Rescue. Operating from our Watch House Museum in Tynemouth on the North East coast of England, we work closely with all the emergency services including the local RNLI, (to which we have no affiliation or connection apart from that they are a declared facility like ourselves). In recent years the Brigade has averaged over 120 callouts a year and these range from monitoring and gathering information on broken down boats to recovering cliff casualties from our coastline.

Tomorrow is Local Charities Day!
Organised by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Local Charities Day builds on the work of the Civil Society Strategy and aims to enhance relationships between businesses, charities and local areas, to help communities grow.
This year, the focus is on highlighting the importance of giving by encouraging people to pledge their time to a local charity, alongside championing the phenomenal and life-changing work of local charit...ies, while shining a huge spotlight on local charity champions – the unsung heroes who always go the extra mile for their charity, the people and causes they support.
As part of the day the TSB branch on Northumberland Street, Newcastle, will be showcasing the work of the Brigade both tomorrow and on Saturday.
Brigade members will be present across both days and if you're nearby please pop in to learn more about the Brigade and work we do within the Newcastle and North Tyneside Area.

154 years ago tonight, a tragedy was occurring at the mouth of the River Tyne.
In ferocious conditions three ships were blown onto the rocks at the Black Middens - two of which could not be saved. During the course of the night a total of 34 lives were lost.
However, a few weeks later, the TVLB would be formed and the future of land-based coastal lifesaving would change forever.

The Brigade has had an extremely busy weekend so far. Team members have spent around 10 hours on call at three incidents. Last night team members were joined by their colleagues in South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB), Blyth Coasties, Cullercoats RNLI, Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat, and the friends and family of our Chairman Hon. Capt. John Wright HLM for a surprise retirement party. John stepped down from our Rescue Team last month after 44 years of service.
Today we have ...also attended the Remembrance Sunday service in Tynemouth, and held a special event as part of the Armistice Bells event.
Full details on our two most recent callouts are:
CALLOUT - 127/18 - Saturday 10th November 2018 - 21.55h - HM Coastguard paged the Brigade with a request to provide a search team to assist specialist assets from Northumbria Police who were carrying out a search of the King Edward's Bay area between 23.00h and 01.00h. The search was linked the previous incident at the Bay earlier that morning and was linked to coincide with the next low tide. Six Brigade members attended and worked with the Police Helicopter and a search dog. Brigade members were stood down at 01.30h.
CALLOUT - 128/18 - Sunday 11th November 2018 - 10.45h - HM Coastguard paged the Brigade after a boat broke down near to the mouth of the River Tyne.
