West Wood Yurts is a luxury camping experience situated in a beautiful, secluded woodland glade in a quiet corner of Cut Thorn Farm at National Trust Gibside. It was set up in 2010 as a farm diversification project at Gibside’s Cut Thorn Farm and has since continued to support the main farm business of breeding Beef Shorthorn Cattle, which are a native breed, originally found in the Teeswater & Durham regions.
West Wood Yurts comprises of six generously spaced yurts: 2 large yurts for sleeping up to six people and 4 small yurts for sleeping up to four people. The newest unit, our Shepherd’s Hut, offers a romantic private getaway for two, with space for 1 child.

Sadly we draw towards the end of another busy season, it’s been a beautiful summer but I do enjoy the change as the autumn colours come in. We have very limited availability remaining but all bookings can be made for 1, 2 or 3 nights.

Comments about this property- First time staying in a yurt. Brilliant would definitely recommend that you try it. Good compromise if you don't want to go full out camping. Kids loved it too never once asked for tv or tablet. Friendly staff & can recommend the sausages.
Tips for other travellers - We spent all our time at Gibside loads to do. Lots of wildlife to spot & kids enjoyed the low ropes, strawberry castle & nature playscape. Great being able to walk around when everyone else has gone home too. Keep checking the sky you might just see a red kite truly amazing bird.

We're just back from a 3 night stay
.. 7 of us in 2 yurts - (4 person & 6 person- really comfy & so much space) - had a great time...kids loved it...really good play area & great walks round the Gibside Estate. Also onsite showers & wc facilities are excellent & clean. Just fetch towels toiletries food (& beers!) & enjoy yourselves...!!!
We stayed in the Shepherds Hut and absolutely loved every minute of being there. Owners are extremely friendly and helpful, very nice people. Gibside just a short walk away and the surrounding countryside is beautiful. We enjoyed a very peaceful and relaxed get away, we will definitely be back!!
We stayed 2 weeks ago in a large yurt that sleeps 6 people. The welcome we had was lovely, yurts were amazing as was the facilities. Location of the farm/yurts was also perfect for us. We will definitely be back!

We had a lovely stay, well equipped with everything that you could need. A lovely welcome when we arrived. A great area for kids. And with access to Gibside it's an added bonus! Will definitely return
We had a brilliant few days at the yurts. & it only rained a little! They are so warm and cosy and the kids loved the gibside scramble! Will definitely be back!
We are just back from a 2 night stay in a 6 person yurt. My husband, 2 kids and I had a brilliant time. I honestly couldn't fault anything. Just bring food, drink, bedding, towels, toiletries and a torch then just enjoy yourself, everything else has been thought of for you! We ordered meatballs, steaks and burgers from the farm which were delicious cooked on our bbq. Walking distance to Gibside National Trust. All in all a lovely luxury camping experience which we would really recommend.
Totally chill out heaven. Can recommend the shepherds hut for any couple wising to get away from the hussle and bussle of everyday life. Best new yers eve we’ve ever had. Thanks donna (owner) for your welcoming hospitality 👍 Defo worth a re visit

Myself and my boyfriend had a lovely couple of days in the shepherds hut to celebrate his birthday. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and will most definitely be back! I was slightly unsure we would be warm enough but it was so snug and cosy thanks to the fire, I honestly couldn’t fault it! As well as the hut itself being lovely, there’s some lovely walks to be had on the trails and there was an abundance of wildlife to spot. Thank you again! We can’t wait to return :)
Just returned from 2 nights in one of 6persons yurt, It was fantastic, the kids enjoyed it so much they want to go back again next week. Its such an ideal place to get away to, pretty private with the yurts not being to close together. The yurts are equipped very very well, everything you will ever need. The staff are really friendly and great to have a chat with. Our gas ran out on the stove and Allister came as quick as he could to change it, nothing ever seemed to be a problem. Gibside itself has some lovely walks, we done the Gibside Scramble, took us 5hours but seem most of the place and even seen a deer. Kids loved building a fire right next to the yurt, kids had their freedom and loved it. We will be back for sure. Thanks West Wood Yurts, your a fantastic find when searching the internet.
Just had two nights at the yurts very cosy and clean with friendly staff the kids loved playing in the woods at gibside making swords and shelters and I enjoyed sitting by the fire of an evening and the view from up on the ridge was amazing loved it
Just got home from West Wood yurts. Me and my little boy (aged 4) had the most AMAZING time staying in the Sheperds Hut. The hut comes with everything you could possibly need for a perfect glamping trip.
The facilities (shower, toilets and kitchen area) were all extremely clean, the highest standard I’ve seen at a campsite that’s for sure!
There’s so much for the kids to do at Gibside and in the surrounding areas.
The price is amazing and worth every single penny!
I would definitely recommend getting the meatballs to cook up for your dinner as well!!!

Just got back from a 2 night stay at the Sheppards hut. Absolutely loved it. So cosy and so much to do . Being on the grounds of the national park was fab too! Was so nice to have our own private garden and fire too. �
I've thoroughly enjoyed staying in the shepherds hut! It's such a cosy, well designed little building that has the most gorgeous views! Was never running out of things to do either, there's loads to see/do that's just a short walk away. I'd recommend it to anyone �
Hi we have just returned from are stay at the yurts, they are clean and have everything you could need , staff was great nothing was a bother! This was are second stay and can't wait to go back. The surroundings are just beautiful.
Had an amazing time this week. We had everything we needed and more provided. The yurts and site were immaculate. The scenery was beautiful. Shame about the weather but we could not have everything and certainly made the most of regardless. My parents stayed in the shepherds hut and said the bed was so comfortable; they too loved it. Will definitely be going back!!!
Fantastic weekend away. A great idea, it's an unusual, unique experience. Loved every second of it! Camping with a twist, its close to being outside but you get the luxury of being warm and dry! I miss the log burner already! Highly recommend.
