An important notice. More voices will help us. Megan, one of our resident foxes was extremely stressed yesterday. She could hear the hounds on the scent, howling in the woods adjacent to us. She could hear the horns blowing as the hunters were riding very close by ... about 200 yards away from us! No animals were harmed at the Sanctuary I am relieved to say. ... The Staintondale Hunt had been out cubbing yesterday and I am told this will happen frequently near us over the next few weeks ... after the foul cubbing 'sport', it'll then move on to hunting. Their pack of hounds, the terriermen and the sheer disregard of safety for the LEGAL activity of the wonderful sabs (https://www.facebook.com/East-Yorkshire- Coast-Hunt-Sabs-14…/) who were hot on their trail yesterday says its all) ... the hunt think they are above the law. How DARE they take their hunt so close to our charity, our sanctuary, a safe place for wildlife. They were clearly not on a trail and could not tell the sabs, (who were in place to protect our charity and the wildlife hiding in the woods), where their 'scent trail' had been laid. They did not have a scent trail. Terriermen and the numbers of hounds says it all really - they were out to hunt and kill. Illegal activity. ILLEGAL! How are they getting away with this?!? We need your help, as locals, as supporters of our charity, as passionate, kind, caring people who wish hunting to be in the past. We're getting in touch with Hounds Off for help with this. Please email the council: Easte@scarborough.gov.uk about your concerns regarding the hunt using the cinder track. We wish to also extend protection to the woods behind us. We support feed many wildlife living in these woods. Please also get in touch with The East Coast Sab Group if you would like to support or join their caring team. It was a relief to know they were there yesterday. https://www.facebook.com/East-Yorkshire-C oast-Hunt-Sabs-14…/ Remember also that the cinder track is used by Eskdale School as their cross country run, the general public with children, pushchairs and families and dog walkers. Nobody should have to come across such individuals. The sabs have photographic evidence of their violent behaviour yesterday and even had one of their vehicles vandalised ... for simply ensuring their hunt was adhering to the law ... they are not. There has been instances where hunts have gone onto private land and uncontrollable hounds have killed animals - we can't allow that to happen here.

Our little runty, bald baby squirrel One of our patients at the moment. He is about the same age as the majority of our young squirrels at the moment but he is about a third of the size! There would have been no way he would have survived in the wild. It took many days of painstakingly bottle feeding in all hours. There were many moments we thought he wouldn't make it. But he is now eating on his own, his fur is growing back, albeit slowly! He is too small to be with the other youngsters so he spends his days playing amongst fleecy blankets on his own. Quite happy but we do look forward to the day we can introduce him to others.

Nap time <3 Rosie the badger is doing well. She originally arrived after being hit by a car, dragging her hind legs behind her and for the first few days needing additional fluid support and warmth. Though not perfect, she is now walking. Has a great appetite too!

Tweet and Twoo, our pair of resident captive-bred Eagle Owls. Both have lived here for about a year now. Needed a sanctuary home after their previous owner was too ill to care for them in his elderly age.

And the winner for this years front cover is Happy Seal by Patricia Morris. Photo was taken at Filey Brigg. Well done Patricia!

Just a photo of our beautiful resident fox Megan <3 How anybody could harm these wonderful animals, I don't know.

£70 raised so far for the installation of electricity to our new cabin. Its here and we wish to get all the electrics in it sorted and ready to go ahead of the big move, so when we do move our new cabin, it's ready to just plug in and go! We know where our sockets are going for incubators and all the other bits and pieces that will require electricity. Please donate so we can get this set up. Thank you

This baby rabbit has been with a few days now. Honestly didn't think the little one would survive whens he arrived after being found huddled on her own in the cold, underweight and lethargic. A few days of TLC, warmth ... and the company of several adorable baby squirrels has really helped! Now nibbling grass and greens on her own. Any donations of items for our charity shop would be much appreciated! We have a loading bay right outside the shop for drop offs. The shop and the lovely team of volunteers who run it really does help our charity and animals like this baby wild rabbit.

Last week we were called down to our charity shop. A rambler on his travels from Sandsend to Whitby came across this kitten and dropped him off at the shop. This video was taken a few hours later. The little kitten was limp, cold, thin, weak and suffering from cat flu, with his eyes glued shut. After his eyes were cleaned and a few hours in the incubator to bring up his body temp ... and a little kitten milk, he had enough strength to eat some shredded chicken. He is doing much better now and the man who found him has offered to give him a home when he is all better. His rambling group collected round and donated £500 as well! Thank you to everybody who has been donating cat food in the donation bin at Sainsburys!

Fox release! 'Tom',a young fox which originally came to use after being hit by a car as a cub. Bleeding from his nose and mouth on arrival, it was a worrying start! He made a full recovery and has grown into a beautiful young male. To donate £5 towards our work with foxes, text WILDLIFE to 70660. Donations like these go towards the medical work for car collision victims, often on fluid bags and veterinary bills. Thanks so much!

User

This sanctuary does a fantastic job with wildlife and have been extremely helpful giving me advice on a baby hedgehog I rescued in late November weighing 245grams, on what to feed her and general care, thanks to these she has survived the winter lots of tlc keeping warm ,to avoid her hibernating she is now a whopping 700grams and raring to be released in a few weeks time ,Hopefully to find a husband in my mums garden and produce some cute little hoglets thank you so much for your help and would love to visit on my next trip to Whitby .

This lovely organisation took in a youthful Herring Gull we found in our area, separated from its Mum in a rough storm and clearly distressed.

After a night spent in our house with a diet of tuna and water, Jane collected it and took them to this awesome place. I've seen the gulls have a paddling pool and a great place to grow and play together here.

Helping it not become a cat or foxes meal is one thing, but to care for it until its old enough to live by itself takes dedication. Highly recommend this place as a first point of contact with any wild animal related issues in the area. Well done!

User

These wonderful people were brilliant yesterday when I found a distressed pigeon in my back yard. After calling them a lovely volunteer came and picked him up as I no longer drive. I think it is marvellous that in this world where people think it is ok to call birds vermin that some still see them as the beautiful creatures that they are.

Thank you so much.

User

Thank you Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary for coming so quickly to pick up the baby seagull I found on my street today. Much appreciated x

User

One of the best and hard working wildlife rescues that genuinely makes every effort possible to benefit, protect wildlife and provide wildlife with a second chance. Despite the large volumes of animals admitted, each individual receives all the necessary care and attention to ensure it has the best chance of survival. I was fortunate enough to complete the wildlife rehabilitation course, which I highly recommend as it teaches you so much and gives an insight into the daily activities in a busy wildlife rescue centre. Thank you to everyone there, especially Alex, who made my stay and experience so enjoyable, educational, friendly and welcoming! I wish you all the best for the future!

Looking after so many needy creature!!Got 8 rescue battery hens and now all their feathers have grown in and egg production has started. Will be looking for more!

User

Just dropped off a very poorly little sheep that we think has been hit by a car; we spoke to a lovely lady on the phone who despite not having a lot of room, made sure there was space to take her in. She met us on arrival and it was obvious she genuinely cared about all the animals there. Going to call back later to see if there's any updates on the poor little sheep but I am confident she is in the best hands. So lovely to see an organisation that genuinely care about all animals!

User

I can't thank Alex enough for taking in Randolph the herring gull a few months ago who I had hand reared in my rescue in Staffordshire. We didn't have any other gulls of a similar age for him to go with and as a result he became far too used to humans. When he was fully grown I contacted Alex and told her all about him. She was happy to take him in . We made the 3 hour trip to her and as soon as I saw all the other juvenile gulls in their pen I knew I'd made the right choice for Randolph. After a few days he was mixing more with the other gulls and became much more wary of humans and was eventually released back to the wild. WWS is like Gull heaven! Thank you so much to Alex and her team for all their help.

Having seen a baby crow hanging about near a dead adult, I knew just who to ring for advice. Alexandra missed my first call as she was driving but she rang me straight back. Unfortunately she was too far away to get the crow but she advised me how to do it and told me that there was another one from the same area that they picked up just that morning. Her brother was looking after that and would take this one if I could get it up there, I went with a large plastic container and a towel and caught the baby crow myself. I got my son in law to drive me up to the sanctuary straightaway and there was her brother to greet me. Its a wonderful place that the local wildlife are lucky to have as so many people volunteer there as Whitby is a great place for animal lovers.

I hope the baby crow was OK and has a long and happy life with what might have been its sibling.

User

Fantastic!! They have taken all kinds of animals for us and cared for them! They never turn anything away which is lovely, often the attitude towards certain animals (especially seagulls and pigeons!!) is not overly caring so it's great to have somewhere that genuinely cares and will do all they can no matter what the patient! Our practice has done a little collection for a donation for them as a thank you for all their assistance over the last year, they are fantastic!

User

Dropped off an injured gull and Alex immediately removed the piece of barbed wire stuck in its wing, rinsed the wound and assessed it. Heartening to know that there are people who devote their lives to helping wild animals, and does such a fantastic job of it.

User

Alex and every one at Whitby Wildlife are committed, compassionate and see the value of every life no matter how small.

User

After trying all weekend to find someone I could take 3 very young baby birds to, I'm so happy I came across this place. I phoned up and spoke to the lady who seemed really knowledgeable & friendly, and I'm confident the babies are now in the best place for them. I'm so happy to see they're doing well so far :) You do such a great job rescuing and nurturing animals in need, and to do this out of your own pocket and with donations is amazing! I've told lots of people about your work, I'm really grateful. Thankyou x

User

After searching for someone in our area that would take a disabled pigeon and having no luck, I emailed another rescue place who found me Whitby wildlife sanctuary. I emailed them and they got back to me straightaway and said they would take the pigeon. She sounded lovely and put our minds at ease that he was going to get looked after. Very committed and caring. She even said we can contact her to ask about the pigeon is getting on, if we want. Great person, wish there were more like her!!!

User

Absolutely excellent. Called as we had a poorly baby crow and the lady that came was fabulous. Such a caring attitude. Thankyou for your assistance.
