About Whitworth Hall Hotel & Deer Park

Perfect for any special occasion or event!

Whitworth Hall Hotel & Deer Park Description

The Whitworth Estates dates back to 1183, and was owned by “The Lords of Whitworth” before being purchased by Mark Shafto, whose family resided at the Hall for over 300 years. Destroyed by a fire in 1877, one of the few portions to be saved was the library, now The Library Restaurant and the oldest part of Whitworth Hall Hotel. The Library is an ideal backdrop for intimate weddings and private dining, hosting a candescent fire place and huge French doors.
Licenced for both indoor and outdoor weddings Whitworth is the perfect venue all year round.
The Whitworth Estate was sold in the 1980’s and remained a private dwelling by the Duncombe’s until 1997. Our aptly named Duncombe Suite is a quaint, atmospheric room, perfect for lunches, weddings and boardroom meetings.
The Whitworth Suite is our largest function suite, bright and elegant it is fitting for weddings, and private functions, with its own bar and dancefloor. We are on hand to turn your dreams into a reality, whatever event you are planning.
Our deer park is a quintessential back drop for any wedding or special occasion, and feeding our fallow deer is a favourite among visitors old and young, not forgetting our fishing lake which is also a breath-taking setting for those all-important wedding photos.
We also play host to outdoor team-building activity centre Lead The Way, where you can spend the day bush crafting, code cracking or axe throwing, before retreating to the hotel for dinner, including Tuesday Steak night or Wednesday Pie and Pint night!
Located in County Durham and boasting 29 sumptuous bedrooms, Whitworth Hall Hotel is a beautiful setting all-year round and is one of the North-East’s favourite country hotels.

We went to whitworth hall for a meal for my daughters 21st birthday. What a lovely place. From the receptionist to the bar staff and the lovely lady hosting in the restaurant (who had us singing "bonny bobby shafto",),what a fantastic welcome. We had a drink in the bar,so cosy, then we fed the deer, then off for our meal in the beautifully set out library restaurant.

What can I say, everyone agreed, the steak was beautiful, cooked to each persons requirement,my son had a burger, and what a burger, presentation was amazing. All of the food was lovely, and the oreo cheesecake looked gorgeous!.

Will definitely be visiting more often, what a wonderful experience!!

User

We stayed last night, and we loved it. From making the reservation and getting a fabulous price match deal to the wonderful staff and service. Our dinner and breakfast were amazing, the room was beautiful, just a stunning place. We will definitely be back thank you so much

User

We renewed our wedding vows and held our reception and night do at Whitworth Hall Hotel. The day went without a hitch expertly overseen by David the wedding coordinator. He and his team were friendly, professional and took great care of us and our guests. They set the room out beautifully with great attention to detail. The food was delicious both at the reception and at breakfast the next morning. All of the hotel staff from reception to bar to housekeeping were polite and helpful. I highly recommend Whitworth Hall Hotel as a wedding venue and also just as a great place to stay.

User

We held a networking event here in May. It was fantastic. Kathryn and David have always been very accomodating. The food was amazing - home made curry with giant naans. We even got to feed the deer. Great event!!

User

Only went for a meal but the most exceptional service, nothing is a problem for the staff! Food is absolutely gorgeous and the setting is beautiful! Can’t fault this place one single bit! 11/10!!

User

My wife and I stayed here for one night 22/07/18 and took advantage of a special deal that was going at the time. We found the reception to be excellent, ( we had arrived quite early but this didn’t prove a problem) We obtained a bag of deer feed from reception and went out to the field where the deer were grazing and what a spectacular sight to behold, all the young and older deers running around and being fed it was amazing. We then went to the bar for a liquid lunch and sat outside taking advantage of the weather which was brilliant. In our room which was spacious and very nicely decorated with tea/coffee making facilities and en suite bathroom/ shower. We had booked to dine at 19-30 in the library and the food and service was impeccable. In the morning breakfast was served again in the library and the choices were excellent and again the service was exceptional. I would definitely return to this hotel again and as I write I am planning another visit very soon.

User

I use to come here as a child... for the first time I brought my own daughter here last night and it’s such a magical place. The deers are amazing and so friendly if you have food that is HAHA which is only £1 for a big bag. It was so nice to be able to take my daughter to a place I use to go all the time I remember it like tomorrow however it seems to have improved 100x the grounds are amazing! They also have hand sanitizer available once fed and stroked all of bambi and her friends to minimise germs

User

I had an overnight stay at the hotel and I loved it!

The afternoon tea was fabulous and can see why it has won awards, it was all served in a beautiful garden room, the surroundings and the staff where really good and attentive and the cakes where beautiful.

I was told the scones had just been freshly made.

I would defo recommended a visit if for nothing else just to walk threw the amazing deer park and feed the deer.

User

Had our wedding reception at this lovely venue at the beginning of April, just want to say a huge thank you to David and the team for making the day run so smoothly. We had the best day!

User

Everything about the hotel was exceptional. It was clean, and roomy. Excellent service in the restaurant where we had dinner. Food was beyond good and good value for money and service was both attentive and efficient. Room itself was well equipped and comfortable. I could go on but suffice it to say I was very pleased with my stay, and although we only stayed for one night it was long enough for us to decide to book our wedding their in 2020.

User

Didn't even know this little gem was there till recently so decided to pay a visit. As a family of 4 we stayed Wednesday night. We were thrilled with every aspect of our stay except the temperature of our room...but we accept heating is a very personal thing. From the moment we stepped through the door the staff were very friendly, efficient and attentive. On arrival it was realised the beds for our children had not been set up so we were offered complimentary hot drinks while we waited for them to be made. Dinner was pie night and exceptional value for a really tasty steak and mushroom pie with loads of fresh veggies and mashed potato. Breakfast was equally delicious. Eggs and kippers cooked to perfection. The deer feeding was an added unexpected bonus. We were most impressed that the manager sought us out in the morning to apologise for the delay in accessing our room the night before. He clearly is a manager who is truly managing his hotel well. We wouldn’t hesitate to highly recommend Whitworth Hall.

User

My husband and I stayed here last night it was a Christmas present off our daughter and what can I say from driving up and seeing the deer roaming freely around the grounds to going into reception area there was a lovely roaring fire when we got to our room it was lovely very olde worlde it’s like going back in time fabulous we had a two course meal booked and the menu had some nice choices I’m quite a picky eater so decided on haddock chips and peas had a bit of a wait for drinks there only seemed to be one waitress on who was very efficient but restaurant was quite full so bit hard for her to do all on her own there was a older gentleman helping with drinks but that seemed about it room throughout the night was very warm shower was fabulous constant hot water lovely breakfast was very nice got taken to table asked if we wanted tea or coffee took ages to arrive think they forgot but it was ok to be honest I prefer to have tea with meal so all in all a very enjoyable stay would definitely return

We went for an afternoon tea on Mon 9th April, thought we’d treat ourselves as it was our 30th wedding anniversary. On arriving at reception at 1pm we were asked if we had booked, despite the restaurant and conservatory being empty. Then we were told that it wasn’t served until 2:30. We couldn’t wait as long as that as we’ve an elderly dog back at home, and we’d travelled a long way to get there. We decided to have a light lunch, but the waitress still had to check with the chef that it was ok? We ordered a gin and tonic and a pint of cider, the gin and tonic was warm, in a normal glass with no ice or lemon and the tonic was already in the glass, normally I get it separately. To be fair to the waitress, who was very good by the way, she did apologise about the choice of drinks. When our sandwiches arrived , my husband has chicken and bacon and I had cheese savoury, they were just like shop bought, but were extremely expensive at £6 each, and we’d also ordered chips which were soggy. Our total bill was almost £30, which I couldn’t believe, for what we’d had. The whole experience totally spoilt what was supposed to be a special day for us. Why could we not just have the afternoon tea early, the chef was obviously prepped for it. Previously we had been numerous times with family and always had a fabulous time, which is why we chose it in the first place, but I was left bitterly disappointed and left almost in tears. We cannot get our special day back again.
