BANK HOUSE FLY FISHERY AUG 24TH TO SEPT 3RD A slower than usual start on August 24th proved to be just a minor blip as the good sport quickly returned thereafter. Our chunky rainbows have been providing great sport with lots 3lb fish being taken, and the occasional appearance from some of our huge resident browns really spiced things up. Enough to get anyone’s pulse rate up! Proving to be Mr consistent, Mr M Peter from Overton made three visits to us and landed a total of 26 ...trout. Olive fritz, Cats Whiskers and Hot Head damsels were his weapons of choice and mightily successful they were too. Mr Francis from Lancaster caught eight trout on beetles and hoppers, he had rainbows to 3lbs and browns to 3lbs 8oz. Tom Smith tempted a cracking brownie of 10lbs to cat’s whisker. Tom returned it to water to fight another day. Fred Squires from Garstang and P Davie from Westhead both took six rainbows up to 3lbs on buzzers and Mr L Walsh from Oswaldtwistle had a nice rainbow of 5lbs 8oz, which also took a buzzer. Buzzers have accounted for quite a lot of the fish caught over this period. Mr A Leigh from Preston took twelve rainbows to 4lbs fishing an orange grub pattern. However the catch of the week has to go to the man simply known as John from Morecambe. John fished hoppers and damsels catch ten trout, his catch included rainbows up to 3lbs and a belting resident brownie of 13lbs. John also returned this fish, where it can continue to gorge on dace fry or anything else that takes its fancy. Good angling John. The rod average over this period was 3.7 fish per angler. BANK HOUSE FLY FISHERY: AUGUST 14TH – 23RD Bank House has continued to fish well over this period with a rod average of 3.85 fish per angler, which is pretty good considering how popular our 4hr and 5hr tickets are. The best catch was a whopping score of twenty fish caught by Mr M Peter from Overton. He caught both rainbows and browns on a cats whisker fritz lure, and to prove it wasn’t a fluke, he returned a week later to catch a further ten on the same method. Mr F MacMast...er from Liverpool caught 12 rainbows up to 4lbs on a bloodworm however there’s always more than one way to skin a cat, as Tom Smith also got into double figures on the same day using blobs. Ricki Newbolt finished this period with a catch of eight trout on damsel patterns and his catch included a belting brownie of 6lbs. We saw two other 6lb+ brown trout caught. The first was caught by L Bell from Chipping on a dry, the second by L T Tichy from Liverpool; his fish took a pattern fished static under a bung. I have mentioned quite a few different flies and methods, as is always the case when reporting on a period spanning several days. To quote Stock’s guide and angling extraordinaire Paul Bebb: “It’s all on the day” Very true that is too. At Bank House at the moment, as well as the flies mentioned above, buzzers and dries have also accounted for some good bags of fish, especially over the last couple of days. There are also loads of Dace fry that are about an inch and a half long now. I have seen big trout ploughing into them causing them to quickly scatter across the surface. Some trout are obviously feeding on them and I would wager that the big brownies will take their fair share at dusk and overnight. I haven’t heard of anyone fishing big fry patterns though. They might just be worth a chuck. Tight Lines Ben

HOW BANK HOUSE BEATS THE HEAT Bank House has continued to fish well throughout the summer despite the hot weather that has hampered so many other waters. We think this is because of the amount of water that flows through Bank House on a daily basis. The water in the entire lake turns over about every two and half days, so it does not sit exposed to the hot summer sun day after day getting warmer and warmer. Also, before the water reaches Bank House Fly Fishery, the inlet stre...am flows from its source almost entirely through dense woodland or underground and is rarely exposed to the sun. This also helps maintain a lower water temperatures, a crucial factor when considering summer trout fishing. We have seen some good catches in August so far on a variety of methods that reflect the differing conditions on the day. Tom Smith had an arm aching session with fifteen rainbows, all of which fell to various blobs pulled back. Dave Watt had eight fish on okey dokey buzzers. Gary Martin had fourteen rainbows on Sunday on pink blobs and pink snakes fished back very slowly. He commented that some of the takes were savage, almost ripping the rod out of his hand. Felicity Appleton has visited Bank House three times this month catching ten, seven and seven fish respectively. She has switched between pink lures and dry daddies and beetles. There have been plenty of decent brownies about, Ron Hill landed one of 5lbs 8oz and J Hodgson had another at 5lbs. I have been told of anglers being snapped and some big brownies that have got away. The resident big browns are wily creatures, they know where the snags are. I have fished bank house a couple of times over the last week whilst giving lessons. I found that a sunk foam daddy twiddled back on floating line produced some great takes. Tight Lines Ben

BANK HOUSE FLY FISHERY: June Summary & July so Far Bank House Fly Fishery has been producing some good catches and good fish too. Throughout June the rod average at Bank House was 4.1 fish per angler. In think the best reported session was probably made by Mr Ellison from St Helens. Mr Ellison visited Bank in the middle of the month and fished a hothead damsel pattern to catch thirteen fish and his best brown trout tipped the scales to 11lbs 8oz. There were a lot of catches o...

DATE: March 25th to April 1st REPORT AUTHOR Ben NOTABLE CATCHES: 14 trout for John Sykes, 12 fish for Ricki Newbolt BEST RNB: 10lbs+ John Sykes, 8lbs 8oz Steve Martin & 8lbs for Mr B Nafdel BEST BROWN: 4lbs 4oz Mr Baines from Morecambe... ROD AV: 4.3 fish per angler Sport: Bank House has continued to fish well with good numbers of fish being caught and some good sized fish have been coming out as well. The week started off fishig well to cats and black n green patterns. Felicity Appleton took 7 trout to a green pea. Mr B Nafdel caught a lovely 8lb rainbow on a cat’s whisker and Mr R Ellison had another at 6lbs 8oz on a fritz pattern. We had one frosty morning on the 29th where we got off to a slow start, but Keiron Morton found that if you got down deep enough they would still play ball. He took five rainbows on a back n green lure fished on a Di 5 sinking line. He shared his successful method with other anglers who also got it to work after he had left the fishery. Good angling Keiron. The following day the conditions had warmed up again and the trout were quick to respond. Ricki Newbolt took twelve fish to a gold headed damsel pattern and John Sykes had fourteen fish on a similar fly. John’s catch included a rainbow over 10lbs. Gary and Steve Martin, fishing nearby and were also amongst the fish. Gary had nine rainbows on a Dawson’s olive and, whilst Steve didn’t land as many as Gary, he did catch the best fish of the day. A rainbow of 8lbs 8oz a new PB for Steve. :) See pic below. Easter weekend saw a swing towards more imitative patterns with buzzers, crunchers and pheasant tail nymphs working well. Gary Martin returned yesterday to take six rainbows on an olive cruncher and Ian Scott from Kendal took five on ptns. Don’t forget to ask for Trout Masters form if you get a big fish, there is plenty about at the moment. Tight Lines Ben

March so Far on Bank House: Yesterday Ricky Newbolt landed 17 fish including a beautiful 10lbs 8oz rainbow. Ricky kept on the move and his most successful pattern was the ‘ever consistent’ cat’s whisker. Mr D Lea from Silverdale had 12 fish to 4lbs 8oz fishing a combination of buzzers and cats and Mr D Davey from Penrith put a bag of four fish on the scales for 14lbs 2oz. His bag included a 7lb rainbow and he caught them on a variety of different patterns. Earlier this month ...Mr R Moore from Formby caught a cracking 8lb brownie on a damsel pattern. (See Pic) On the whole good numbers of trout have been caught damsels, cats, buzzers and crunchers. It pays to keep on the move when fishing Bank House fishing through each pool and swim, and it is always a good tactic to try a few casts tight in to islands. The Islands on Bank House drop off into deep water straight away. If you stepped off any of them you’d be straight up to your armpits. You always get trout lying up under these banks and any overhanging vegetation. Some big browns haunt these areas so be prepared. Tight lines Ben
