Bigert Mire Cottage Description

Bigert Mire Cottage is a remote traditional stone lakeland cottage situated in a hamlet in the unspoilt Duddon Valley.

It is our weekend home, providing tranquillity and an escape from the bustle of modern life.

Our kids are at the age where they play sports at the weekend and we are not able to get up to the cottage as often as we would like to so we have started to rent it out to visitors via AirBnB.

We started renting it in early 2016 and the feedback that we have had has been amazing. It has been really humbling to be able to share it with so many wonderful guests who have really appreciated the cottage and the unspoilt Duddon Valley.

We have been really heartened by the feedback from our guests. We love the cottage and it has been a wonderful experience to share it with so many people over the last 18 months.
We have had 64 reviews now and 61 have been 5 Star reviews. You can see the reviews here => https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/9474473…
I have posted some of the entries from the guest book below. The tranquillity of Bigert Mire seems to be it's best feature :-)

Jane's work to convert one of the old Chicken Coups into a Garden Room ( known locally as the "Hen House" ) is nearly done.
We have some more work to do glazing the lower panels of the doors but it is a lovely spot to relax to already.
Come and have a look :-)

It has been a really busy few weeks at Bigert Mire. The stove failed and had to be repaired. It is a wonderful old stove that has great presence and lots of character but it is about 45 years old and spares are hard to find.
Fortunately the local Blacksmith did an amazing job of fabricating some new parts and it has been re-installed and is now better than ever. It still needs another coat of polish but I will do that next time I am up :-)

Fixing and Fettling
It was a few days of fixing and fettling at the cottage. The wood shed was spruced up and we started work on converting the old Chicken Coup ( yes you read that right ) into a garden room.
The idea was to replace the front of the building with 4 bi-fold doors ( or should that be quad fold ? ). What we hadn’t appreciated was the 9 sets of hinges that needed to be chiselled and fitted or the time it takes to paint 4 doors 🙂
... There was still time for some walks up the Pike, a cycle ride to Broughton Mills and Broughton and mucking out a friends horses.
It was also lovely to catch up on the notes left by recent guests, I will post some of them in the next few days.

We had James and his friends staying this week. It was a landmark for us as James was one of our first ever AirBnB guests when we started last year.
They had a fantastic time with snow covered hills and amazing night skies.
They left us an Easter Egg too :-)
... ==James's Review== Having visited Bigert Mire before, we already had an idea of what our stay would be like. This time we were visiting in early spring rather than summer, therefore we were treated to snow capped hills, and a roaring open fire which we didn't experience the last time. The views are phenomenal (including the clearest night sky ever) and the cottage is cosy and full of charm. I would recommend this place to anyone who needs to get away from urban life!

Nice walk up the Pike with Rolo but the views weren't so good :-)

Fantastic weekend despite the weather forecast.

Fantastic Weekend up at Bigert Mire with friends. Walked down to Frith Hall via Logan Beck where the kids had a great game of hide and seek. Also sorted out lots more wood for the stove.

Cycling from Oxenholme -> The Drunken Duck -> Penrith
This isn’t strictly a Bigert Mire Cottage post but as we had AirBnB visitors in the cottage Jane and I took the opportunity to get away for the night at the Drunken Duck – the only problem was Jane said we had to cycle !

Lots of log splitting to blow away the cobwebs.

Posted a new web site for the cottage. I will add more information to it over time as people ask more questions.

It's been almost exactly a year since we started letting out the cottage on AirBnB. It has been a brilliant year with 36 different sets of visitors and amazing feedback from virtually all of them.
We don't get up as much as we used to because of kids clubs etc. so it is great to be able to share the cottage with so many people that have really enjoyed how special it is.
Been working on a new web site for the cottage ( http://bigertmire.co.uk ). The photos that Steve took la...st year are brilliant - Steve was our very first AirBnB guest - his photos were much better than mine. Sean
