About Biograd

BioGrad provides lab based training for Bioscience graduates

Biograd Description

In today’s highly competitive job market many bioscience graduate students feel that they struggle to compete for entry level positions due to insufficient practical experience.

BioGrad have developed a range of short courses for graduate students that offer laboratory training in specific practical techniques. These courses provide practical tuition in the areas of microbiology, genetics, agri-food and pharmaceutical research.

Courses are offered at a range of experience levels from the one day Laboratory Skills course for the complete beginner, to Practical Skills in Drug Discovery for those with more experience. Students can select the course suitable for their experience level and build up their practical skill sets by adding more courses.

Our lecturers are selected from researchers working in both industry and academia in order to make sure we are teaching the most up to date techniques. All courses have a low student to tutor ratio to ensure you obtain the best learning environment possible. Courses include a lunch on each day, with time for networking and seeking advice from the lecturers available. Over the years, BioGrad lecturers have taught essential practical skills to thousands of graduate students to help develop students CV’s and improve their employability after graduation.

BioGrad offer courses in specifically designed teaching laboratories located at two campuses. The industrial laboratory is located at the BioPark in Welwyn Garden City and the academic teaching laboratories at the Open University in Milton Keynes. Some courses are offered at both locations to allow students to select their preferred teaching environment or travel arrangements, however a few courses are only available at one location due to the requirement of large and expensive equipment located within the laboratory.

Three students from our Academy have just completed the 5 day Clinical Skills course at Biograd. I would like to say that for any students wishing to enter a career in Medicine or any clinical profession this programme will provide experience which cannot be obtained anywhere else. It has provided our students with hands on clinical skills training not usually available to A level students and will for sure not only enhance their applications to medical school but provided such motivation which one of our students described as life changing. I very much intend to send our students on Biograd courses in future. Many Thanks to Natalie and the excellent team of Scientists and Clinicians.

User

The five-day Clinical Skills and Medical Research course was a thoroughly enjoyable, insightful week. It was a great opportunity to apply theory learnt in my A-level studies in a practical environment. While providing a great deal of clinical exposure suitable for any medical school/health professional application, laboratory work and career development talks have introduced me to other bioscience careers I hadn't considered.

Each member of staff went to great length to ensure each student was comfortable and at ease in the clinical setting. Great thanks go to all members of the BioGrad team.

I highly recommend the course to anyone considering a medical career that wishes to have hands-on experience often not possible during shadowing work experience placements. Also, an opportunity to complete a Gold DofE residential while adding valuable skills to CVs and professional profiles.

User

I took part in the 5-day BioGrad course last month. It was a life changing experience seeing people from different part of UK and sharing the same interests. It was educative and insightful experience. Made lifetime friends as well.

I totally recommend this to anyone.

User

I took part in the 5 day Laboratory Residential Course in October Half Term 2017. I have to say it has been one of the best, most informative and interesting courses that I have been on. I thoroughly recommend you participate on this course. You will get a lot out of it, I definitely did and everything I learnt helped me with my A-level Biology

All of the Staff were amazing and welcoming and the Art House hotel is a perfect hotel to stay at with themed rooms. This local hotel is a great place to look at all the amazing sites Liverpool has to offer.

User

I thoroughly enjoy doing the course! I attended the clinical skills course and it has boosted my confidence of using science, chemicals and lab work. I made an excellent group of friends as well - we are all still in contact over a month later! Would definitely recommend to anyone who is interested in continuing education in science! The staff are also amazing and extremely helpful, they make sure you’re safe at all times but also easy to ask for help! Definitely worth the money!

User

I recently completed the 5-day laboratory skills course as part of expanding my experience whilst looking for a job in the science field. I can honestly say that not only did it kick my confidence into gear, it also provided me with lots of real, valuable practical application skills used in everyday lab work. Natalie, our tutor, is a very experienced scientist with an incredibly vast spectrum of knowledge, and thanks to her, I gained a much better understanding of what it means to work in a laboratory, and how diverse the industry is.

Highly recommended!

User

I recently attended the courses in cell culture and drug discovery.

They were fantastic!

Great student to teacher ratio, the structure of each day was planned out so that there is enough time for everyone to get involved, with time for detailed questions and extra guidance.

Natalie and Annemeike are lovely supportive teachers, with a wealth of knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and immunology/genomics. It was inspiring to learn of their journeys and experiences.

It's so difficult to gain practical experience within labs, outside of employment, that courses like these are invaluable. Natalie had such dedication to her students, ensuring they get the most out of their time at BioGrad.

I will definitely be back again! Thank you both!

User

I recently attended the 5-day Laboratory Skills course and couldn't recommend Biograd enough! ALL of the staff were extremely welcoming, and more than accommodating. Natalie tailored the course to our group's needs and provided us with lots of useful advice for going forward. Thank you so much for everything Biograd and I look forward to attending my next course!

User

I have very recently completed the 5-day Laboratory Skills training course, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

As an Open University student with little to no lab skills, this was the perfect course to get some hands-on lab experience.

We covered risk assessment and COSHH; pipetting, weighing materials on a balance, and making solutions; serial dilutions and the application of various indicators to see a pH colour change.

We did molar calculations, data analysis, a little nano-toxicology to determine which samples of lung macrophage cells were contaminated with cancer. From microbiology, gram-staining, to immunology, growing our own e.coli and b.substilis bacteria on agar plates that we made ourselves, determining the antimicrobial resistance using some natural sources; finishing off with some ELISA with Zika samples. Amazing!

Natalie is such a lovely person, with an inspiring career - I'd love a career like hers - and her team are fantastic. Sam is crackers, Kate is amazing, and Raquel has such a bubble personality you can't help but smile.

I'd recommend this course to anyone and everyone who either requires those lab skills to get their foot in the door of a scientific career, or those who might need a refresh.

User

I had a brilliant week completing the Laboratory Skills Summer School at Liverpool Science Park. During the course, I gained invaluable experience in a laboratory by carrying out several experiments involving microbiology and toxicology. Also, I developed some vital skills such as working in a team, using my own initiative and time management, and I am fully aware these skills will be highly sought after by graduate employers.

I could not have asked for better lecturers to run the course. Natalie and Phil were so experienced and knowledgeable, and they ensured that the course was highly interactive and interesting. They encouraged me to offer my own interpretation of the results I had produced whilst carrying out experiments.

A maximum number of 10 students per week meant that the student to staff ratio was perfect, and I would recommend this course to any undergraduate undertaking a laboratory related degree.

User

I found the 1 day course very enjoyable. As I am only into the 2nd year of my part time biology degree, some of the calculations were alien to me and I did feel lost, but I was impressed as Natalie was very patient and explained things to me in more detail and I wasn't made to feel stupid.

I was delighted to find the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. I was made to feel welcome the minute I stepped into the lab.

I cannot recommend the courses enough as I took away many positives and now have a clearer idea of what I want from my future.

User

I enrolled in the 5 day practical lab skills course with BioGrad, and I could not praise it more if I tried. I am doing an OU degree and needed some experience to add to my CV – little did I know I was going to get so much more than that!

The fundamental skills you learn here are priceless, and our tutor was fantastic (with both practical and career progression). Be warned – don’t come here expecting to be told what to do – you learn to think for yourself and interact with your co-workers. If you need a boost in confidence to help you progress this is an excellent learning opportunity for you!

I also learned correct procedures for working in a lab, including pipetting, gram staining, culturing bacteria, ELISA tests, pH indicators, agar plates and correct COSHH, sterilisation and disinfection techniques (amongst many other invaluable skills) – and how to recognise mistakes and learn from them.

On our final day we discussed how to get a job in science – from entry level and upwards, with tips on networking, maximizing your CV and selling yourself to your employer.

But, most importantly, this course has given me confidence to progress within a very competitive field and recognise my strengths and weaknesses from someone who has years of experience. The presentations on the final day were my favourite part of the week, talking to people about something I am passionate about gave me an unmeasurable amount of drive and enjoyment - plus it helped me to be more decisive about which path I want to pursue.

If you are an A-level student, an undergraduate, a post-graduate looking to start your career, an OU student, or even if you just need a push to progress a career in science – DO THIS COURSE! They really seem to care if you do well and give you personalised tips in areas that can benefit you.

Thank you BioGrad – You have given me the momentum I needed to get the job I want!

User

I completed the BioGrad lab skills course at The Open University Milton Keynes, and I had an excellent day. As an Open University student starting the final year of my chemistry degree, I found the opportunity to get some hands on lab experience invaluable. The staff to student ratio was ideal and all of the staff were friendly, knowledgeable and incredibly helpful with plenty of time to spend with each student. I would recommend these courses to anyone who may be after some practical lab experience which is very difficult to come by as an OU student. I realise that the cost can be a little off putting to students on a budget, but if you keep an eye out there are some brilliant bargains to be had. I would consider the cost a worthwhile investment for any body hoping to move into a lab based job. I intend to complete the microbiology course as soon as the funds and time allow. Natalie and her team ensured that everybody had an enjoyable and educational day and I would recommend these courses to everyone who is interested in gaining some valuable lab experience.

User

I attended the microbiology lab skills course, with Dr Phil Martin. I couldn't recommend this course enough. After finding out a bit of background on us they catered the course to our needs. It was an educational and insightful experience, whilst also being incredibly fun!

User

I attended the 5-day laboratory course last month and I can't recommend it enough. I'm currently studying Health Sciences through the Open University and will graduate late-2018. I've found studying via distance learning to be incredibly frustrating due to lack of hands-on experience so I was delighted to find BioGrad offers these courses.

The laboratory was very bewildering at first but I soon got to find my way around. We were all encouraged to think for ourselves and also work as part of a team in order to figure things out rather than being 'spoon fed.' I think this helped us all to learn better and we were also encouraged to learn from our mistakes.

On the last day we did an informal presentation to the rest of the group on a topic related to what we'd been studying through the week and I found this to be really interesting. Then Natalie did a presentation about careers and applying for jobs which has given me food for thought.

User

I attended the 1-day laboratory skills course last month and I can fully recommend it to anybody who is considering going on a BioGrad course. The course tutor Dr. Kenny was a wonderful and very knowledgeable teacher who has a wealth of lab experience and was able to use this to bolster her course delivery. As I haven't been in a lab since graduating 18 months ago, I was quite nervous about getting back into lab work. This wasn't a problem at all as the course had a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere where all questions were welcome no matter how ridiculous they may have been. The course was overall well organised and professionally delivered and I will be easily able to apply what I have learned in a hopeful future lab-based career.

User

I attended a lab skills course so I could add some more practical skills to my CV as my chemistry degree is with the Open Uni. The course was really useful and I learned loads. Natalie was really helpful and knowledgeable. I'll definitely return as I want to do the longer lab skills course and the analytical skills one.

User

I attended a 1 day lab training day and it was such a great experience and the staff was so lovely would definitely look at going back to do a longer training course!

Fab service!
