Birkenhead Park Description

On Easter Monday 1847, the gates were opened to the very first publicly funded park in the world. Designed by Sir Joseph Paxton - Birkenhead Park was created to be the People's Garden - a place where the lowliest peasant to the British Monarch could stand together to enjoy a piece of the countryside in the middle of the city.

In 1850, Fredrick Law Olmstead visited the park and with its inspiration, then went on to design and create what is arguably the most famous public park in the world - Central Park New York.

In 2004 Birkenhead Park underwent an ┬Ż11. 8million restoration return it to its former glory.

Today, Birkenhead Park is a Grade I listed landscape and carries the prestigious Green Heritage Award. It caters for all visitors with a number of sports such as Football, Cricket, Bowls, Angling and cycling, as well a visitors centre and access to some of the original structures around the park.

Without a doubt one of the finest assets the people of Wirral, never mind just Birkenhead has. It is well kept and very few abuse it but thousands use and enjoy it. The paths, the lakes, the bridges over the lakes, the boathouse, the wildlife, the children and parents enjoying the countryside in the heart of an industrial town along with cricket and rugby union pitches. My grand parents, parents, myself, my children and their children have all enjoyed the gift passed down over the generations, and I will be eternally grateful, thank you to all who have made, and continue to make, this such a wonderful oasis of beauty and tranquility.

User

User

User

It's a lovely park & the visitor centre is a fantastic asset. We visited the Victorian Christmas market yesterday and I will visit again this week. I found that gifts were reasonably priced and good value. There was a lovely atmosphere especially as the Santa dash was taking place too.

User

I walk in the park twice a week and it is always a pleasure to see the changing seasons in such beautiful setting. We are truly so lucky to have such a wonderful park here in Wirral

User

I used to love playing in this park practically every day when I was a kid, and hadn't been there for ages until I visited the other day. It is very peaceful, and well maintained, and perfect for a relaxing walk. The cafe is very good too, with all day breakfasts and enough ice-cream flavours for everyone.

User

I take part in the park runs most Saturdays and am well impressed with the park and the up keep, credit to the people who look after this , nice cafe in the visitors centre, well done all.

User

I have never been before but I would recommend it it is amazing will be going again as I didn't see it all

User

Great for a family day out if weather nice. Plenty to do from children's playground to climbing the rocks nice walk around the pond see the ducks and squirrels climbing the trees. Park has a great cafe and plenty of fields to fly drones play footy etc.

User

Birkenhead park is one of the most fabulous public areas in the UK. It has plenty of space for sports, cyclists climbers and runners. Our dog loves the park and so do we. Our friends bring their dogs to see us so we can all enjoy the park.

The issue of littering and anti-social behaviour has improved a lot over the last few years and the rangers are fantastic and help the community.

The history and beauty of birkenhead gem is often overlooked and the lakes and Victorian features are not to be missed.

User

A little jewel in the crown. I have lived in Wirral most of my life and never in my life until yesterday have i visited the part on park road north. Such a lovely tranquil place and so looking forward to spring when all the trees etc start coming to life. I am going to make it a regular walk there with my dog.
