NHS Health Checks Blackheath is currently offering NHS Health Checks to patients aged 40-74. This check looks at your risk of developing heart disease. If your risk is found to be high, the doctors & nurses at Blackheath will work with you to see what can be done to improve your health.
The reception staff will help you to organise an appointment to take advantage of this free service.

Dr Quinn was at the World Psychiatric Association Congress in Berlin presenting results from his review of the acceptability of mental health tools in primary care.
These tools are used to identify patients with mental health symptoms, to help doctors make the diagnosis and to monitor patients' progress. Dr Quinn's research shows that the tools are generally acceptable to patients. Patients are sensitive to questions about alcohol & drug use, abuse and social wellbeing issues. New mothers can find screening for post-natal depression unacceptable - this is a very important issue as experts believe that post-natal depression is not diagnosed in about half of all sufferers and this can affect the health & wellbeing of the mothers & their families.

Dr Mottram addressed local healthcare workers, patients and local healthcare managers at a meeting in the Village Hotel Bromborough last month about the development of a new Adult ADHD service. This innovation will be delivered in primary care under the auspices of our local GP Federation, the Wirral GP Federation (GPWFed). The planned service will have the full support of local ADHD specialists.

There have been two messages on our Facebook page recently complaining about not being able to get an appointment. Contact the Practice to discuss with the manager. On June 3rd I posted on Face book that 43 patients had made appointments in May but not attended. In June 34 patients did the same. This causes great distress to the staff and would-be patients who could not get an appointment. Please be thoughtful for others and if you can't keep your slot please ring up as soon as you can to cancel so that patients who could not receive one can be booked in for your cancellation. Most (not all) people have mobile phones these days. Text or call.

Shingles vaccination.
Public Health England has issued a reminder for patients aged 79 to have their shingles vaccination before their 80th birthday. The vaccine might not prevent an attack of shingles but makes it less severe with a reduced risk of post-herpetic neuralgia. The doctors at Blackheath encourage patients in the appropriate age groups to have this vaccination. ... Emergency Contraception Blackheath offers emergency contraception. If you require this service telephone the practice and tell the receptionist simply that you need emergency contraception. Don't be embarrassed - you will not be telling anyone something they've never heard before.
If it is the weekend/ bank holiday weekend or whatever then a number of Wirral pharmacies will provide you with emergency contraception. We cannot list any of the pharmacies here - if we name one we have to name them all - but a few 'phone calls to local pharmacies should soon help you find one. You definitely need to 'phone the pharmacy to make sure the service is available that day.

The Care Quality Commission visited Blackheath about a month ago. We are all keen to hear what the inspectors have to say about our medical practice.

Antibiotic Guardianship There have been some scary stories in the media recently about how infections are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics. We all need to take responsibility for this - doctors for prescribing too easily and patients for thinking that they cure all ills.
In the same way as we are all responsible for the current situation we all need to do something about it.

General Information: Today the surgery has 2 medical students in the surgery.

Last month (MAY) 43 people made appointments but failed to attend. This was 3 whole surgery sessions. If you can't attend DO please let us know, as someone else needs your appointment.

Faculty GP Award for Dr Quinn
Mrs Erica Allen, Chair of Blackheath's Patient Participation Group, and Dr Bennett Quinn at the Royal College of General Practitioners Mersey Faculty AGM where Dr Quinn was presented with the Faculty's "GP Award" for 2015.

Dr Priscilla Wong is leaving us soon - moving on to her next attachment in the Dept of Elderly Medicine in Arrowe Park Hospital. We wish her continued success in her medical career.

I have found all the staff at this medical centre very helpful and nothing is to much for them to help you in anything you need sorting out

Excellent medical centre. The staff are extremely knowledgeable, friendly, professional and their customer service is second to none. I have never had any problems getting an appointment and I feel we are always very well looked after. I would never consider going to another doctor's surgery now.
