MYTH - the higher the sun protection the better
FALSE - there is so much misunderstanding on sunscreens and understandably there are so many contradicting pieces of information.
If you apply an SPF 15, apply it evenly and frequently (90-120 minutes) gives virtually as good protection as an SPF 100 says dr Desmond Fernandes founder of Environ skincare.
... So why not just apply an SPF 100 and have done with it I hear you say? Well - research work at riverside California on sunscreens has shown that three of the most popularly used sunscreens for UVB in the world (octylmethoxycinnamate, octocrylene and oxybenzone) do not remain on the skin but are absorbed. Why’s that a problem? When one of these molecules comes into contact with uv they become a free radical. If this happened on the surface of the skin that would be unimportant - (remember my video on free radicals and anti oxidants with the wheels and tires? If not you missed out!) basically this is not good! And can cause further damage to cells and DNA.
You can reduce the chance of this happening by using a physical sunscreen which sits on the surface and reflects UVA and B rays with added anti oxidants which mop up those free radicals the sun emits.
