About Bmc

Bmc Description

We're the British Mountaineering Council - or BMC for short.

It’s an exciting time for the outdoor world. A recent Active Lives Survey revealed that 2. 14 million people now go hill walking, climbing or mountaineering twice a month. That’s almost 2 million walkers, around 100, 000 outdoor climbers and 170, 000 indoor climbers.

Our activities are constantly evolving, and we are too: from nurturing future talent to owning climbing crags for the benefit of everyone; from organising beginners’ climbing courses to raising over £100, 000 to help mend the British mountains.

People often call our work a broad church. We even work in one: a converted old church in West Didsbury, Manchester. For hundreds of dedicated volunteers and 31 paid staff, this is the hub for a diverse range of activities to help everyone get more out of climbing, hill walking and mountaineering. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a passionate indoor boulderer or a committed long-distance walker, you’ll find that our work benefits you. After all, we’re all connected by a shared love of adventure, whether that’s found on a chalky crimp or a windswept mountain.

The BMC is rather unique: part your representative body, part campaigning organisation, part environmental pressure group, part land manager – and all so that you’re free to just get out there. In our exciting world, we can all find our natural home: from swinging axes to getting pumped on plastic, placing nuts to standing on summits. Our diversity is our strength.

Without the BMC who knows what the state of British climbing or mountaineering would be.

Their work, care, and sense of responsibility to support access, ethics and conservation is probably the major reason we have so many amazing climbing / walking venues in the UK.

And thanks for the great films on BMC TV. The stuff coming out now is, really, really good.

And thanks for giving the scene more Grimer.

Unfortunately I've had to make two claims against my BMC insurance over the last couple of years. Nobody likes to make an insurance claim but BMC have been wonderful in both situations.

The first was due to some lost equipment where they were quick to reimburse me once I provided proof of purchase.

The second occasion was when a close relative passed away and we had to cancel a holiday of a lifetime. During a really difficult time BMC were very supportive of our application and we recovered the money to book a future adventure.

Great support provided by a great organisation.

The BMC Organizational Review. This is about how the future of your activity is represented and by whom. Do you want to be ‘governed’ by appointed directors who decide what’s good for you or would you prefer to be ‘represented’ by predominantly elected directors supported by a devolved democracy where you can define and prioritise objectives. Met some BMC staff today at the British Bouldering Championships in Sheffield. They were really interested in our club ‘Newcastle upon Climb’. They said they’d like to talk more with us about affiliation and doing an ‘inspiring story’ interview .

I’ve been a member for a few years now and the discounts on clothing and gear more than cover the cost of membership each year. We’ve also taken out insurance for trips over the years too but only had to use it once. My wife got HACE, HAPE & pneumonia in the Himalaya but as soon as I gave our insurance details over everything was sorted for us, unlike others we saw in Kathmandu where there were delays which meant that helicopters took longer and some treatments were refused once at hospital. Bear in mind though there is a clause for policies in Nepal where the excess increases if you need a helicopter. I personally wouldn’t get insured with anyone else as I trust the BMC to make sure that when something does happen they’ll do what they can to help.

User

I’ve been a BMC member for many years now and have purchased their insurance packages for Alpine Climbing several times. I’ve never had to make a claim, the peace of mind it brings however is worth it’s weight in gold.

User

I’m really pleased with BMC rock climbing insurance - recently submitted a claim under Baggage Delay, and soon received a cheque for the full amount claimed, with no delay, no queries or quibbles. I had phoned the claims hotline to check I could buy new gear which was very expensive, and they assured me I could claim back the expense, allowing me to get on with enjoying our holiday ASAP. I always take out BMC insurance for climbing holidays and now I realise the benefit, not just for a medical emergency but for a baggage claim such as this; it has made a great difference.

User

I have taken BMC insurances six times over the years, luckily I didn’t have to make a claim at all. I like the way the rock climbing insurance is organised, nice and simple without too much if and buts. However as I have not make a claim, I cannot comment too much on that.

I enjoyed the short videos they produced, I found them informative and inspirational.

I tend to stay away from the political stuff; however I appreciate all the hard work done by dedicated people who ensure access to the countryside.

Keep up the good work.

User

I have been a member for 15 years now an always use the BMC insurance for single trip and annual insurance for myself and my family. We have used the service for no the summer and winter trips and could not be happier with the levels of cover provided.

User

Have used BMC insurance for over 10 years. Have had to make a claim with them once, and they were very helpful. Would definitely recommend.

User

Good insurance policies, attention to access issues and the safety of climbers and mountaineers, I’m so glad we didn’t become ‘Climb’!

User

Excellent service through a well thought through graded scheme of insurance policies specifically tailored to the climbing/mountaineering context.

User

Apart from their work securing climbing access across the country, their insurance is fantastic both in its level of cover and ease of renewal.

User

They are my first choice for travel insurance these days. Good value cover and well thought out options.

User

checked the BMC insurance out. they do not cover clients over 65. Why. we still walk and climb. This needs addressing by the members.

User

Nigh on impossible to find any information online on BMC's website and social media feeds about the BMC Youth Finals on Saturday 28th April at Ratho...poor organisation leaving myself as a parent of a competitor with little to no idea of what is going on.

User

There is much I don't like about the BMC, but the misguided 'Mend Our Mountains' initiative (a.k.a. Knacker our Knees / Bugger Our Bridleways) is particularly annoying for someone who is a mountain biker as well as a mountaineer.

Please Share Public .... In Intensive Care and BMC have not authorised payment for my medical care.

Do not take out insurance with this company . BMC INSURANCE ..... BRITISH MOUNTAINEERING COUNCIL INSURANCE underwritten by Prosight Syndicate UK (apparently based in London) underwritten by 1110 at Lloyds have shown to be unsympathetic, unprofessional and inefficient when claiming for a medical emergency.

Although having confirmed over a recorded telephone conversation that I would pay for any medical costs if my medical emergency should prove a be an undisclosed pre-condition, I am left worrying if I am going to be discharged from a hospital in India after suffering a perforated gastric ulcer where I have spent 3 days in Intensive Care and transferred to a recovery room 12 hours ago.

BMC have failed contact my Doctor for past medical history records when they have known about my illness for 4 days.

I called BMC for an explanation who informed me that my Doctor's telephone number was engaged. (For the past 4 days?)

To assist BMC I offered to contact my Doctor and ask him to fax details over to them on the understanding that BMC would text me the fax number to me, which they didn't.

I have been informed by the Hospital Welfare Officer that I will be discharged today due to this.

I am still unwell so much so that the Doctor has informed me that I must return to the hospital on 30/01/2016 for another investigatory procedure to determine if I am recovering and if I can fly home.

I am still so weak and unwell that I haven't the energy to fight my case anymore and would be so grateful if all my friends on FB would share this post to get some kind of reaction from BMC.
