About Breathworks

Breathworks offers mindfulness courses and teacher training for pain, illness and stress to individuals, professionals and organisations in the UK & beyond

Breathworks Description

Breathworks is a not-for-profit social enterprise and leading international mindfulness organisation co-founded by Vidyamala Burch. The organisation was born out of Vidyamala's personal journey. She first injured her spine at 17 years old and learned to meditate in 1985. In 2001 she started teaching meditation and mindfulness to people living with pain, illness and stress out of a desire to share what she had learned with others. Vidyamala is now an experienced meditation teacher who works internationally. She offers wise and practical guidance in how to bring mindfulness and kindness to experience - including difficulties such as pain and illness - so one can 'live well' with a free and relaxed mind, whatever the circumstances.

Today, Vidyamala is an internationally known author of Living Well with Pain and Illness, BMA award winner Mindfulness for Health co-authored with best-selling writer Danny Penman and her latest book Mindfulness for Women co-authored with award winning editor Claire Irvin.

Breathworks mindfulness courses, teacher training programme and products have been developed to meet the needs of everyone living with chronic pain, physical illness and associated stress. They are designed to ensure that regardless of your situation or condition, you can have access to the Breathworks methods.

We also provide specialist programmes for organisations and for health, education and social care professionals wishing to incorporate mindfulness into their work.

Breathworks programmes and products are a development of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and founded on practice-based research. Our research on the clinical benefits of mindfulness revealed that across all scales measured (mood, pain experience, quality of life and confidence in activity despite pain), the Breathworks approach showed statistically and clinically significant improvement.

"Here's a formula you should commit to memory to make joy and relaxation a natural part of your practice. Recite it every time you sit, especially when you catch yourself thinking that meditation is difficult."
- Culadasa, The Mind Illuminated

“One thing that’s changed my life more than any other is the practice of self-empathy. Simply hearing the term for the first time was a revelation for me, since I immediately recognized that I wasn’t in fact empathetic toward myself. It had never even occurred to me to have empathy for myself. And this was despite the fact that I’d been, at that point, practicing lovingkindness meditation for more than two decades.” https://www.wildmind.org/…/four-steps-t o-self-empathy-and-s…

We have seen first-hand how much this course helps people with pain live the life they want to live. Thank you from all the women and men with pelvic pain who have found relief via your books and courses.

Recently completed the 'Mindful Movement' course at the beautiful Buddhist Centre, Manchester. I was quite anxious about attending, as the thought of movement, whilst living with a chronic pain and fatigue condition, filled me with dread. However, I arrived to a very welcoming, warm, understanding and pleasant environment. The tutor was very good and provided a consistently paced program. Looking forward to my TTa course in September!

Me encanta Vidyamala. Leer su libro te inyecta inspiración y fuerza para sobrellevar cualquier tipo de discapacidad. El programa de mindfulness para la salud es sencillo y te deja herramientas útiles para que puedas seguir en casa con la práctica de la meditación. Gracias.

I'm really inspired to learn more about the Breathworks approach to Mindfulness after attending a taster session led by Keith Harvey in Manchester on the 5th May. It was really interesting and the small group practice was so calming and grounding. I definitely want to do more. Many thanks.

I really enjoyed the Refresher session with David at the Buddhist Centre on 28th October, which really covered everything- mindfulness practice, an interactive look at theory etc.

I felt I got a lot out of it.

I really enjoyed the Mindful Movement weekend I attended in March at the Manchester Buddhist Centre. Gained a really great insight as to how I would facilitate this to others. Thanks MJ for for teaching and sharing your experience with us.

Despite many years of practice in meditation, I found myself struggling with chronic pain and anxiety following a steep decline into CFS/ME. The practices offered by Breathworks were (and are) effective for me. I particularly liked the one minute space. I keep a led body scan on my phone just in case.

A most wonderful course that has tough me so many life skills which I use daily. On the train, washing my hands any moment I can to be present I enjoy. Thank you for passing on this understanding of being in the now :-)
