Brereton Heath Local Nature Reserve

About Brereton Heath Local Nature Reserve

Brereton Heath Local Nature Reserve, over 50 acres of mainly silver birch and oak woodland surrounding a 15 acre lake as well as areas of heathland, a wildflower meadow and wetland areas.

Brereton Heath Local Nature Reserve Description

There is a wealth of bird life, particularly in the woodland. Great and Lesser spotted woodpeckers, nuthatch, treecreepers, kingfisher, heron, great crested grebe, goldfinch are just a few of our regular sightings.

There are recreation areas suitable for picnicing. Cycles are permitted and dogs do not have to be on leads as long as they are under control, but visitors are expected to clear dog waste from all areas outside the woodland. Dog waste bins are provided.

For those with mobility problems, there are free dedicated parking spaces, and a wheelchair accessible route follows the perimeter of the lake. A disabled toilet is available, for RADAR key holders.

Brereton Heath has a visitor centre, which includes a visitor information room, toilets, and changing rooms for lake users.

The park is open by 8. 45am each day, and closes at 5 p. m. during the winter, and 8. 30pm during British Summer Time.

While working at Poynton Park recently, Ranger Pete spotted a fantastic selection of birds around the pool one morning. Some of the highlights were Ring-necked Parakeet, Wigeon, Goldeneye, Gadwall, Mandarin Duck, Goosander, Shoveler, an elusive Water Rail and Tufted Duck (Photo taken by Ranger Pete in 2015). It is becoming a great site for a spot of birdwatching.

Following some recent tree work on the Borrow Pit Meadows, Ranger Al has been putting up a new fence along the edge of the work area in to keep the boundary clear and secure until the plants and bramble re-grow. The brambles will soon make a dense barrier once they start growing in Spring. Fencing alone can be interesting, as you often need two pairs of hands! But we manage 😊

Spent a most pleasant afternoon with family members aged two to 78...something for everyone...easy walking through fields and woods and round a lake.A lot of dogs were having a good time too even paddling amongst the ducks and geese.we will return soon.

User

Really wonderful on very early mornings, all year round.

Good for children, room to play and explore the woodland paths. Find the willow tree buildings. Wide open spaces. Places to play using imagination.

Away from traffic.

Lots of birds to feed, just remember, don't feed bread, cake or human food. Bring wild bird seed with you. Don't make the birds ill.

Ice cream van.

Car park, reasonable fee for a whole day.

Ranger information.

Excellent place, just add families and your dog (Don't forget to clean up after doggie).

NO swimming.

I've been visiting here since it was reclaimed post industrial use. Seen it change from a hole in ground with plantings, into a wonderful recreational space where people and nature meet.

User

Never been hear before, and totally enjoyed it , it was flat so I could get around on my mobility scooter, my dog 🐶 enjoyed the walk and going in the water,

User

Lovely place to go for a walk, so many paths to how down either through the woods or just round the concrete paths round the lake. Fab views and all in all a good day out👍🏼

User

Lovely place for a walk round with the dog or children. Plenty of woodland to explore, nice facilities. Car Park is pay and display. Does get busy at weekends.

User

Lovely experience walking the dogs and meeting new people new dogs ! It's so friendly and very well looked after . Ducks on the water and the firemen too !!!obviously practicing with their own boat .

User

I’ve visited this place periodically over the last 10 years ; with children having picnics it’s a lovely place with woodlands to explore and small trees that children can safely climb ( supervised !). As a new dog owner I decided to re visit today there were lots of dogs both off lead & on lead : all friendly & well behaved.

User

I was ln charge of Brereton Heath wood before it was a sand quarry it was birch wood wich was harvested in rotated in strips and the trees used for pit props in the coal mining industry There always used to be a brown owls in the three Scottish pines just over the trench just lnside the wood where runs alongside Brereton Heath Lane (Lady's mile).Do they still get there?

User

I visit most weeks with my sisters dog and absolutely love the place. Everyone I meet is very friendly as are their dogs. I like to stay in the wood and have never had an issue with dog mess but I have collected quite a number of plastic bottles/crisp packets etc to take back to the bins. Dogs can't be blamed for everything!

User

I have been coming here for around 30 yrs with family as a child, and now my own family as a parent. Have so many memories of climbing trees, canoeing, and running round with friends. I've moved away now, but still a great place to walk on Christmas Day after a big roast dinner!!

User

Brereton is a lovely place to walk your dog. Very under rated which is a shame. Nice wood to walk in and a gorgeous lake. Wildlife and flowers ever where. Only every had good times here. I also used to come here as a child and its still as beautiful.... if not more so now

User

This is a lovely place, well-maintained, with nice views and woodland walks. Certainly worth a visit, but each time I go, I wonder if it's only me that has a slightly uneasy feeling that it's a little over-managed? Almost the whole waterfront now has no access, and other areas too. It seems to have become too controlled, with a sterile sort of feel. I can understand the need for conservation and preservation, but I feel in recent years it's become a little too restrictive. There used to be waterside paths, boats, padding and even swimming, but there's just a tiny area that dogs splash in now. It's a great short walk, but I think maybe it's gone a little too far down the look-don't-touch route. Maybe it's just me, but see for yourself, and either way, it's a great way to spend an hour or so, especially if you combine it with a meal in the excellent Bear's Head nearby.

User

I go to Brereton a lot. I do get disappointed with the amount of dog owners with little knowledge of their animals sometimes but the park is lovely and we still continue to visit.

User

Had a lovely walk round today but its such a shame that there are people not cleaning up after their dogs or cleaning up but leaving the poo bags lying around. I'm glad my 1yr old isn't walking yet as I certainly wouldn't let him walk round for fear of him falling or standing in it.

User

Lovely , lovely! happy people walking dogs, joggers, moms with baby's in strollers, and us walking ourselves. Although..... I was scared and nervous, as a lady walked 3 of her dogs, .. the dogs were fighting with each other, one of them came up and sniffed me, I was dead nervous. I was attacked by 4 Dobermans when I was a teen. It would be VERY helpful if some people keep some of their dogs on a leash

User

Lots of loose running dogs and dogs mess. Sadly not a nice place for children or picnics.

User

Beware of the many uncontrolled dogs off lead! For the second time here my dog, who is on-lead, has been attacked by dogs off lead that the owners have no control over and can’t recall. Not suitable for nervous dogs, recovering dogs or walking with children and your dog on-lead. I won’t be returning. As a dog owner myself it’s a lovely woodland walk, all to frequently let down by the many irresponsible dog owners that seem to walk here.

I go to Brereton a lot. I do get disappointed with the amount of dog owners with little knowledge of their animals sometimes but the park is lovely and we still continue to visit.

Had a lovely walk round today but its such a shame that there are people not cleaning up after their dogs or cleaning up but leaving the poo bags lying around. I'm glad my 1yr old isn't walking yet as I certainly wouldn't let him walk round for fear of him falling or standing in it.

Lots of loose running dogs and dogs mess. Sadly not a nice place for children or picnics.
