Bury Market Description

Traditional Values in a Modern Setting

The history of Bury Market dates back to the 15th Century and a Market Charter granted by King Henry VI, but the current site occupied since the 1970’s has everything a modern shopper would expect.

On the Full Market Days of Wednesday, Friday and Saturday the Market is home to over 350 stalls selling all manner of goods and produce and when combined with the neighbouring Mill Gate and nearby Rock Shopping Centres, Bury offers a fantastic array of shops and leisure activities which has seen the Town’s retail offer ranked as one of the Top 10 in the whole of the North West.

Bury Market has received many plaudits over the years and most recently was awarded ‘Coach Friendly Shopping Destination of the Year 2014’ in the National Coach Tourism Awards.

A theme that is reflected in all the awards is the diverse nature of the stalls, the friendly and knowledgeable service of the traders, and the quality of the management of the site and the facilities on offer.

The Market’s stalls are mainly undercover and sell everything from exotic indulgences and special treats to day-to-day necessities. The Market is all on one level and accessible to all with disabled facilities centrally located in the modern Market Hall. Since its construction the Market has benefited from ongoing investment from Bury Council and now provides a traditional market shopping experience in a thoroughly modern setting.

Many people have written about the market – but a good account of a visit can be found by reading Stuart Maconie’s book “Pies and Prejudice – In Search of the North”, in which he talks about the best deli he’s ever seen, and much more besides. As a taste, here’s one quote from his book in which he introduces the reader to the Market:

“Five minutes’ walk from Bury station is a shoppers’ Mecca, a retail nirvana rich with exotic bargains, a fabled bazaar, a veritable souk of the north. Come with me to Bury Market. ”

Throughout the year the Market has a variety of events and activities that further add to its character including Food & Craft Markets, Community Farm Animals, Birds of Prey Roadshows, Stilt Walkers and much more.

Whilst a full day can be spent on the Market visitors to the Town Centre can also take in the Fusiliers Museum, Met Theatre or East Lancs Railway to add a cultural element to their trip.

The Market website www. burymarket.com is a good source of information for anybody planning a visit to the Market or alternatively the Market Office is open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and can be contacted on 0161 253 6520.

It’s Eat What You Want Day!
Today is the day to forget about that diet and fill your face in! Instead of cereal, why not have a full English on the market for breakfast this morning? Or instead of a salad, why not have a fish and chip lunch on the market? 🤤
Be sure to eat good today!

love Bury Market, you can buy almost anything you want, people who run the stalls are lovely to, also lovely atmosphere in the coffee pot Cafe, the owner Reg is so nice and welcoming, I will be sorry to see him go, and wish him all the best for the future, hopefully the new owners will be just as nice, though Reg will be a lot to live up to, I also love going in to the meat and fish hall to, love the salmon and seafood they sell there, it is so lovely, all in all Bury Market as got to be the best Market there is, if only other Markets were like this xx

What an amazing place, loved it. Bought the most delicious food, Lancashire cheese, black pudding, rock cakes, pork pie, oven bottom muffins and more. Fab lunch at one if the markets cafes, can't remember the name but it was so good and clean and excellent value for money. The owner was from Edinburgh and was such a good host and fun character. Would highly recommend this cafe, we had jacket potatoes with one filling and side salad, £2.50, and my sis had a cheese and onion panini, also £2.50, all washed down with mugs if tea, perfect. Will defiantly be back

User

Took mum to Bury Market ...we were both very disappointed with the fish and chip cafe ...the fish was grey although they told us it was cod. Not up to past standard. First time we have been disappointed with the QUALITY of the fish in 30 years.

Fantastic market with more to offer than any other market that I've been to. A great fish and meat section and don't forget the famous Bury Black Puddings too.

It is also next to a couple of good shopping centres.

Best market there is not been for years and forgot how good it was. Staying in my caravan at roughlee visted the market on two separate occasions manage to spend good amount of money on both occasions plenty of bargains also meat and veg is second to non

User

What can I say. Was ace, with one downside, could not find anyone selling gluten free pork pies lol.

Love it all, the market, the town, everything.

User

Great market - lots of variety of stalls and a fantastic size. The only down side being the bizarre antics of one stall holder quite aggressively pouncing on you if you are holding a smartphone and frantically trying to interrogate why you are “taking photos” (not the best way to drum up custom eh?) Thankfully, unlike that chap, most stall holders seem very polite and helpful.

User

Ever wanted to travel back in time and relive the heady days of 1974 in a wet northern town?

Come to Bury Market - you won’t regret it!
