Emma here! I spent the day at Woolston Park with some of our fantastic volunteers and the volunteers from the amazing Friends Of Woolston Park, clearing out some of the reedbed at the pond and putting in some resting posts for the kingfisher (which one of our volunteers managed to spot in the morning before we started the work).

Today I (Andy) attended the Green learning environment conference where I learnt about activities that can be used to engage SEN children. The conference was hugely informative and has inspired a few ideas of my own which can hopefully be used in the future to get young kids out in their natural environment. I also got to play around outside myself too and make some natural art and makeshift shelter, well for someone very small at least ;) #greenlearningenv_EU #HLF #LoveHeritage #CarbonLandscapeTrainee #HLFNorthWest #Traineeship #Firststeps #HLFsupported The Carbon Landscape Partnership

We were out on Pestfurlong moss with our residence restoration guru Anthony Da Silva. We were learning about how to complete a site condition assessment form and then use that information to create a phase 1 habitat map on QGIS. The maps below show the subjective nature of phase 1 habitat surveys and the use of QGIS. We saw some fantastic mosses and lichens I was particularly impressed with the Vermillion Waxcap (Hygrocybe miniata) #HLF #LoveHeritage #CarbonLandscapeTrainee #HLFNorthWest #Traineeship #Firststeps #HLFsupported The Woodland Trust

I (Helen) was flying solo this afternoon as I headed out to Whitehead Hall Meadow Millennium Green to do some path measuring ahead of writing an access audit. Found some lovely fungi along the way. #carbonlandscapetrainees The Carbon Landscape Partnership #WhiteheadHallMeadowMillenniumGreen #HLF #LoveHeritage Wigan Council

Our week on Little Woolden Moss has come to an end. There were just three of us out on the mossland today but we still got 18 trays planted. Thanks to everyone who has come out to give Andy, Emma and I a hand this week. #carbonlandscapetrainees The Carbon Landscape Partnership The Chat Moss Project #HLF #loveheritage

Day 3 of planting brought about a glorious day on the moss, blue skies and sunshine. Turned out to be a rather active day for birds as well, there were flocks of pink footed geese over, crows mobbing buzzards and sparrowhawks and even a few crows caught in the act of pulling out our newly planted hares tail cotton grass!! Only another 58 trays or so to go ;) #HLF #LoveHeritage #CarbonLandscapeTrainee #HLFNorthWest #Traineeship #Firststeps #HLFsupported Lancashire Wildlife Trust The Carbon Landscape Partnership Friends of Chat Moss

We were out on Little Woolden moss for day 2 of planting, we were joined by some lovely volunteers as well as members of Friends of Chat Moss. Together we managed to plant out 29 trays of plug plants!! Which equates to around 1740 individual plants! A great days work. Big thanks to all who helped out. #HLF #LoveHeritage #CarbonLandscapeTrainee #HLFNorthWest #Traineeship #Firststeps #HLFsupported Lancashire Wildlife Trust

Andy, Emma and I kicked off a week of planting cotton grass and cross-leaved heath on Little Woolden Moss. Hundreds of plugs planted... only a few thousand left to go. #carbonlandscapetrainees The Carbon Landscape Partnership The Chat Moss Project #littlewooldenmoss #HLF #loveheritage

Thanks to Dave Winnard for a terrific foraging event at Amberswood this afternoon, where we learnt what is and isn't safe to eat. #Carbonlandscapetrainees The Carbon Landscape Partnership #HLF #loveheritage #amberswood Discover the Wild

The trainees are here at the #lancashireWildlifeTrust Volunteer Conference. They put up this amazing information stand and they are giving a workshop on what they are up too. If you’re at the conference then come and say hello 👋🏼

Well today has been a learning curve, I (Andy) have been working from GMEU Greater Manchester Local Record Centre uploading survey data into their system. It's been a real eye opener as to how easily (sometimes) these things can be. I can honestly say that I have learned something today. If only I knew what I know today a few weeks ago, definitely would have saved me some time. If you haven't check out the GM website click its worth a look - https://gmwildlife.org.uk/ #HLF #LoveHeritage #CarbonLandscapeTrainee #HLFNorthWest #Traineeship #Firststeps #HLFsupported

I (Andy) was out and about on Little Woolden moss again helping out with the planting going on there. Afterwards I met up with Tony, Emma and Annie at New moss wood to pick up my camera trap and check some scrub that needs clearing as it is beginning to encroach on the scalloped edges #HLF #LoveHeritage #CarbonLandscapeTrainee #HLFNorthWest #Traineeship #Firststeps #HLFsupported

Come on down to Holcroft moss and help fight off the silver birch and bracken encroachment.

Fancy coming out and enjoying the crisp autumnal weather? Why not come down to Little Woolden Moss and help us plant out hares tail cotton grass. #volunteering #autumn #mossland #planting

Come down to Little Woolden moss and spend a few relaxing hours enjoying the habitat and planting out hares tail cotton grass which will help restore this rare mossland

And off I (Emma) went today, determined to do another round of water quality testing and kick sampling at Raynor Park along with one of our wonderful volunteers, Annie. In my haste to get out and do it, I completely forgot colour charts for phosphate and nitrate testing. No worries though, I was able to take pictures and check the results later.
Lesson learnt: always make sure you have all the equipment needed.

I (Andy) was out on New moss wood today in perfect weather conditions leading the first volunteer practical day on this site. The woodland is managed by the The Woodland Trust, we were out clearing old tree guards from the South side of the site. Amazingly we cleared 21 bin bags worth!! Which I (roughly) estimate to be 420 trees worth and around 7084 square metres cleared of old tree guards, not bad going really! #HLF #LoveHeritage #CarbonLandscapeTrainee #HLFNorthWest #Traineeship #Firststeps #HLFsupported The Carbon Landscape Partnership Lancashire Wildlife Trust

Hi all, Emma here! I took part in a Wetland Conservation AQA today. Spent the morning at the office with Stephen teaching us about the types/importance of wetlands and conservation techniques before we headed out in the afternoon to carry out some practical work on the Wigan Flashes. Managed to find a Small Copper butterfly and some interesting mushrooms whilst out on the flashes.
