Garry's latest FOREcast for Cavendish Golf Club Issued: Thursday 13th September 2018, 19:00
Up and down weekend, then call me Michael Fish…
... General situation: West to southwesterly winds will continue to influence British weather patterns over the next week or more, bringing rain from time to time. Varied temperatures, but some warmth.
Friday: A few showers afternoon Variable cloud and some sunshine. Dry most of the morning, but by the middle of the day, a likelihood of showers developing, giving a few bursts of rain in the afternoon. Winds southwest turning westerly, 10 to 15mph. Quite fresh with a high of 15C.
Saturday: Dry overall, some sun A substantially dry day - much better than last Saturday! Chance of a brief drizzly shower in the morning, but most of the day looks dry and a bit warmer. A southwesterly breeze 7 to 10mph, picking up through the afternoon to 15mph. Rising from 8C at dawn to 17C by afternoon.
Sunday: Rain setting in Rain moves in and is likely to become persistent for many hours, although timing uncertain. Brisk southwesterly winds, 15 to 20mph. Fairly humid, 14 to 16C, but cooler in heavier rain. Totals for the day could give a half inch, about 10mm of rain.
Next Week: Warming up, then wet and windy The early part of the week looks pretty reasonable, as Sunday’s rain clears. Some showers possible on Monday. A couple of warmer days are likely , with temperatures 17 to 19C, as a humid tropical air mass moves in from the south-west.
This push of warmth is being driven by what will be the remnants of Hurricane Helene, currently residing over the mid-Atlantic. (This is not the system which will batter the USA over the next few days - that’s called Florence, and is expected to bring a major hit on the Carolinas).
For the UK, there will be some wet and very windy weather on the way by the middle of next week, but don’t worry it won't be a hurricane by the time it gets here… #MichaelFishMoment

Sitwell ‘MacKenzie Trailers’ All but 4, Cavendish Virgins!
Cavendish was delighted to welcome a mixed party from Sitwell Park GC yesterday.
... The party was led by Neil Widdop, Club Captain (main image pictured right) and Lady Vice Captain, supported by the Vice Captain, Past Captain, Club Professional Nic Taylor and Sitwell Members.
All but four were ‘Cavendish Virgins!’ and they all came over as part of the Cavendish MacKenzie Trail initiative, to experience Cavendish and to ‘tick-off’ another club towards gaining their certificate.
Despite a dull and cold start to the day, the weather picked up nicely and ended warm and sunny.
The competition was won by Professional Nic Taylor and partner for the day Sue Bagworth with 40 points and second on a CPO was Past Captain Tony Grice and partner Margaret Cartlidge with 36 points.
All the ‘Virgins’ loved the course and agreed it was lovely, fun but also challenging.
Cavendish GC can now be ‘ticked-off’ the individual MacKenzie Trail Record Cards and many of the contingent expressed their intention to work towards earning their framed certificates for completing all nine courses in the ‘Trail’.
Thanks for coming guys – we’ll be over to Sitwell again soon.

Australian Visitors Return Home Contingent rate Cavendish in Top 3
Three weeks ago we welcomed 4 visitors from a another MacKenzie course 10k miles away.
... Alex, Rod, Ron and John had heard about Cavendish and made a special point of visiting Buxton after playing the top courses in the North West and before travelling to play the top courses in Scotland including St Andrews Old Course in a prestigious competition.
Organiser Alex Cleave has just advised that after another golfing annual ‘feast’ they will now be returning back to Lake Karrinyup in Perth, Western Australia tomorrow – no doubt to put their feet up and have a rest!!
In his email Alex said the group loved all the courses, but that their favourites were, Formby, Birkdale and Cavendish!
Cavendish was recently placed 31st in the National Club Golfer’s UK TOP 100 COURSES and it’s great that so many people are recognising Cavendish’s uniqueness.
Thank you guys for this very welcome feedback and we look forward to seeing you again next year when you return.

Emeline ‘Holes in One!’
After three rain affected Friday events organised by the Ladies Team to encourage ladies and girls to ‘Get into Golf’, it was a joy to experience a DRY Tuesday evening! Hurrah!
Cavendish Ladies were on hand to support and encourage our new enthusiasts, both young and ‘more mature’ to play the Cavendish Piccolo Course
... Emeline McMahon and her younger sister Matilda were really enjoying playing the Piccolo course when they came to the 8th hole … and didn’t Emeline strike the ball sweetly and get it into the hole … IN ONE!! (Emeline pictured Right, Matilda Centre and Lady Captain, Fil Richards Left)
Needless to say Emeline was DELIGHTED!
Getting a hole in one is still the ambition of the majority of golfers, so ‘didn’t she do well?’ The requirement to provide a bottle of whiskey as a celebration was waived on this occasion!
Very well done Emeline and also Matilda. Both of these young budding golfers are looking forward to the next session.
Many thanks again to Cavendish Ladies for a great initiative.

At the end of the trip the usual fines punishment was delivered by Colin Pritchard which made for great hilarity and … many light wallets.

County Foursomes Win Round 2 win for Cavendish Ladies
With home advantage there was great excitement today as both Bronze and Silver Ladies teams played their second round matches of the Inter Club County Foursomes.
... Last year the Cavendish Silver Team won the splendid trophy and were all set to do battle today against a very strong Ashbourne team in its defence.
Several members of the regular team were unavailable to play this second round and so the numbers for selection were depleted. In addition a last minute emergency meant one member had to drop out, but her place was taken by Bridget Watson with less than an hour to the start of the match!
Results Silver Team v Ashbourne Pairings: Linda Green & Fiona Heathcote and Frances Reynolds & Bridget Watson Win – 2 up.
Bronze Team v Tapton Pairings: Pam Brindley & Jean Luton and Tina Turner & Esther King Loss – 1 down
Can they possibly retain the County Foursomes Trophy?

Cavendish 3rd & Neuroscience Leading edge golf research
Cavendish GC featured in a presentation on neuroscience and golf at the 2018 World Scientific Congress of Golf in Canada.
... The poster presentation by the US neuroscientist and neonatologist, Dr Ashvin Sangoram MD PhD, on “A New Paradigm for Golf Instruction Based on Neural Circuit-Specific Training” included three photos of the approach to the 3rd at Cavendish:
https://twitter.com/golf_science?lang=en< br> His innovative, neuroscience-based golf practice programme, combines well-known drills and novel approaches. It focuses on parts of the brain (cerebellum, sensory smartgrid and brain’s GPS) not normally targeted in mainstream golf instruction.
Helping him to prepare the programme is new Cavendish GC member, Steve Pope, a freelance writer and editor – hence the photos of the 3rd at Cavendish. These illustrate the benefits for the brain’s GPS of moving left and right of your target to improve depth perception and target acquisition using the intrinsic circuits that respond to motion parallax.
Dr Sangoram’s programme will be published as an e-book later this year. For more information, feel free to contact: Ash Sangoram, sangoram@gmail.com or visit http://www.goalogolf.com/

... Kim was runner up in the individual competition (Trixie Pedley Salver) narrowly losing out to Catrin Russell from Chevin. Megan was a semi finalist.
Cavendish is indeed blessed with such good young golfers and it’s great to see Megan back playing.
Both ladies have learnt their golf at Cavendish, but both have also spent time honing their skill at universities in the USA.
Congratulations ladies and we look forward to publicising many more successes in the future!

Garry’s Latest FOREcast for Cavendish Golf Club Issued Thursday 6th September 17:00
Some rain, but it could be worse!
... A complex weather situation has unfolded during this week, scuppering what was once due to be a fine spell through into the weekend!
It’s often the case that the weather machine gives us forecasters the run around, and subtle atmospheric changes can have big differences a week down the line!
General situation:
A southwesterly pattern will return into the weekend and beyond. Some rain from time to time, although rarely heavy, accumulating around 15-20mm over the next 7 days. Pressure may slowly build through next week, but a mixed weather pattern may continue throughout September. Temperatures varied, some pleasantly warmer days possible.
Friday: Chance of showers, becoming dry Risk of a few showers coming in from the west in the morning, but these should fade to leave much of the day dry. A brisk west to northwesterly breeze, 15 to 20mph. Feeling cool with a high of just 13 or 14C.
Saturday: Cloudy, small amounts of rain Fronts will come in from the west, bringing a lot of cloud and patchy rain or drizzle. However, the general southwesterly wind means that Buxton will be sheltered by Wales, which will soak up much of the rain, meaning we should escape with just small amounts of rain on and off through the day. Wind speeds around 10-15mph. Top temperatures around 15C.
Sunday: Patchy rain fading, brightening up slowly Some rain in the early hours, and probably early in the morning, but this should clear. Low cloud lifting to give brightening skies, although this might take many hours for the improvement to come in. Winds southwest then westerly, 10-15mph. Fairly mild despite mostly cloudy skies, max 17C.
Outlook for next week (10th-16th September): Occasional rain or drizzle Timing is uncertain, but some rain is likely to come in from the west from time to time. Some dull, drizzly days, perhaps heavier rain and brisk winds at times. Improving conditions probable through the week. Temperatures 14 to 19C by day, and staying mild overnight, lows 9 to 13C, staying frost free.
Further ahead: A final taste of summer? A lot will depend on what happens to Hurricane Florence over the Atlantic. During mid-September, this could give a major impact on the eastern seaboard of the USA. The remnants of this storm could then be drawn into the jet stream, which complicates matters further ahead. Sometimes, we get a spell of fair and warm weather running ahead of the tail-end of a hurricane. So the outlook may feature a last burst of summer warmth, then a switch to properly autumnal wind and rain. Watch this space…

4 AM AM Open Results 2/09/18 Dave gets FIRST hole-in-one!
Dave Crisp got his first ever hole-in-one yesterday in the Open AMAM. On the 9th tee, Dave hit a 6 iron against the wind; it bounced once and rolled in …
... Dave was playing with Paul Crisp, Nev Thatcher and Ian Mycock (who got very emotional when it went in 😂). They all had a lovely day; the weather was great; the course was fantastic and they all enjoyed themselves, finishing with a respectable 10 under par (just messing up on 18th)..
Caddy made all the difference Dave didn’t do it all by himself however – he did have a ‘secret weapon!’ His friend’s son Alex Needham, a junior member at Cavendish and BHPGC caddied for him and was thrilled when he was able to help Dave’s ball towards the hole. ‘Just hit it Dave’ was the advice!
Alex is 14 and has just started Year 10 at St Thomas More School, Buxton and just loves his golf. He’s a regular on the course with his dad Chris and even has his own putting green at home. Alex hopes to get his handicap soon.
Dave was pleased to provide the obligatory bottle of whiskey for the bar, but made special provision for Alex!

What a great golf course lovely views food very nice

User

What a course, if you get a chance to play it, do it! Some lovely par threes, and some real testing par 4’s. The greens are a different level. Up there with some of Surreys top courses.

User

We had a warm welcome, great course and lovey round of Golf. Will be back!

User

One of my favourite courses in the Midlands. I took 43 senior guys from Brocton Hall GC there for my Seniors Captain Away Day on Wednesday 14th September. Despite the big electrical storm and torrential rain the night before, the course was presented in fabulous condition. The greens are typical of McKenzie greens with subtle borrows, two tiers and run off areas - if you are putting well, you can smile if not you scratch your head and smile anyway. Always a pleasure to play this course but the weather on Wednesday was perfect and presented views I had not noticed before. Rachel and Darren looked after us very well on the day and the greens staff did a great job on this gem of a course. I've had many positive comments on how enjoyable the day was and most said they want to return to play it again. Thanks for an unforgettable day.

User

I don't play golf but the club house is open to non members what a fabulous place to dine. Homemade food at its best and a great place for a party with magnificent views

User

Great little course with tough greens and beautifuly laid out course with friendly staff and patrons ..... amazing scenery -: was also featured on CNN sports

User

Friendliest club in the area. Nothing too much trouble. Course excellent. Summe me course though as gets boggey when wet.

7th holes my boogie hole. 15th one of best par 3's you'll play.

User

Excellent round of golf! The course and greens were in very good condition and the staff were really friendly. I particularly found the complexity of the greens a great challenge. Highly recommend a round here!

User

Excellent is a good place to start when expressing my/ our opinion of Cavendish Golf Club. The exuberance from Captain Mike Watson, Historian Richard, Rachel in the Pro Shop, all the other Members with whom we spoke and the Catering Staff (sorry I didn't get your names) was tremendous. The course far out reached our expectations, it was in very good condition - a testament to the Ground Staff. I look forward to my return if only to master the Green on the 14th Hole - thank you Dr Alister MacKensie.

User

Classy course in the heart of some stunning Derbyshire countryside, right on the edge of the delightful town of Buxton. You'll have read that already on their website or elsewhere and it's all true. Catch the course on a sunny day, without too much wind if you're lucky, and you'll enjoy a rewarding round with plenty of features to keep you on your toes. One fairway can be soggy after rain but otherwise the course was *immaculate* on our outing in May despite some recent heavy downpours. We enjoyed the many spank-worthy high tees demanding out best placed drive and lovely, challenging greens - some gladed in woodland, others more open and exposed... never a dull moment. In our experience, staff could not have been more welcoming - which is always the perfect way to start a relaxing and enjoyable round. A treat from start to finish.

User

Called in today on the off chance with my wife to see if we could join. Absolutely fantastic welcome with a tour of the club house, a buggy drive over the course and even a glass of Pimms on the 8th. Thank you so much for your hospitality and friendly welcome. We will be joining when we get back from our holidays. Oh, the course looked fabulous.

User

By far the best course around, everything from value for money, challenging holes, set up/layout of the course. The greens are in superb condition. Will 100% be going back and playing the course again as nothing else comes close!A golf course every single golfer should experience!

User

Absolutely fantastic place great friendly staff fabulous food and service I would definately recommend visiting for a few drinks or some fantastic food in a friendly atmosphere and beautiful views

User

A wonderful place. Great views over stunning countryside and a golf course that will test even the very best golfer.

Greens with undulations and speeds that will turn the average putter into a quivering wreck. Can't wait to return.

User

A little gem hidden away on the outskirts of Buxton. Not the longest course by any means but a challenge for any level of golfer. I wouldn't want to be a member anywhere else!

User

What a fantastic course: Cavendish Golf Club, Buxton, Derbyshire. Warm welcome from the "professional's" shop. Great design/layout by Alister MacKenzie, greens in excellent condition, rolling smooth. If only the bar staff after the round were welcoming it would be one of the best places in the UK to visit.

User

Great hospitality, superb catering, usually a fabulous course. When we visited, it was suffering the aftermath of “the beast from the east”.course very wet, and greens very woolly, but don’t let this put anyone off from visiting.. it’s a great track 👍👍

User

A warm welcome from all members of staff , and very nice golf course with some lovery views, well worth a visit if your in the area !

User

Staff very friendly, lovely views, fairways and rough in good condition however the greens were disappointing
