Gastric ulcers can affect any type of horse, and vets are becoming increasingly aware of the condition in our everyday riding horses. What are the signs to look out for, how do we diagnose the condition and what are the treatment and management options ....

This horse is receiving a melanoma vaccination. The skin is prepped in a sterile manner and Tim has to administer with a high pressure device ...but horse is pretty chilled. Initial work in America suggests that tumour shrinkage by up to 60% is achievable.

I am now able to provide a novel melanoma vaccination service. Melanomas are common in grey horses, occur at many sites yet vary dramatically in their growth rates and effects on the horse. Malignant melanoma is mercifully rare in horses but the effects of enlarging or ulcerated melanomas can be devastating in some individuals. A Novel DNA vaccine for treatment of malignant melanoma in dogs (Oncept - Merial) has been available for use in the UK by recognised specialists in sm...all animal internal medicine and oncology for some years. Ground-breaking work by Veterinary molecular biologists at the University of Tennessee in the United States developed the vaccine for dogs and went on to demonstrate that it was safe to use in horses and 60% of vaccinated horses showed tumour shrinkage, stabilisation or slowing of growth.I have been vaccinating my first patient over the last two months and I'm awaiting the results. The DNA vaccine is delivered into the skin using a special high pressure "gun" and can only be administered by Vets with Specialist qualifications.

This is our pony Harry. We are preparing for the Sweet itch season with our new snuggyhoods rug. Great advice from the team there on getting the fit just right before the flies start to bite.

They tell me this is a "viral" response for a scientific paper about horse white blood cells! Not bad for a horse vet!!
