Fylde 1st XV & Hawks at Kirkby Lonsdale on Saturday
Kirkby Lonsdale RFC has a much longer history than Fylde, being formed in 1877. The Lancastrians' 1st XV will make their first ever visit to Underley Park for a competitive fixture on Saturday (ko 3pm) in a pre-season run-out. In fact, it will be a double header as KL's 2nd XV will take on a Fylde Hawks squad at the same time.
Whilst the great majority of the Fylde squad remain from last season, there will be a few new face...s making their debut in the claret & gold. Lancashire U'20s prop Elliot Horner will make a speedy return to Underley Park after a season with the home club. Scrum-half Cameron Crampton, formerly with Sandbach, back rower Ben O'Ryan (ex-Ballymena) and winger Lex Botha (Leipzig) may also feature.
The Hawks are also likely to introduce a few new faces in their squad when they take on KL 2nds who play in the NOWIRUL Division One alongside Fylde 3rds, the Saracens.
Fylde's final pre-season preparation sees former National One rivals Ampthill & District bring two squads to the Woodlands on Saturday, 25th August.
The Fylde coaches and rugby management hope that the experienced gained by their young players in National One last season will prepare them well for their National Two (North) campaign ahead which opens up with a home fixture against Otley at the Woodlands on Saturday, September 1st.
Kirkby Lonsdale have slowly climbed the RFU league structure and now compete in the North Premier Division, level five, one below Fylde, their highest ever status. They become the highest placed Cumbrian club when they finished 8th last season, two places above great county rivals Kendal. They have an award winning Mini-Junior Section, one of the great strengths of the Club.
KL appointed a new coaching team in the summer when former Fylde winger Scott Armstrong became Head Coach, assisted by another former Fylde (and Kendal) favourite, lock Gareth Gore.
KL have a typically strong Cumbrian pack and a fluent backline. The playmaker is usually the very experienced former Penrith & Cumbria County fly-half Dave Barton. LRGS product and Lancashire U'20s back Matthew Bargh joined Fylde at the beginning of last season, played for the Hawks but found the travelling too much. He then made the KL 1st XV squad with some impressive performances and scored a 50m try against Wharfedale last Saturday in a preseason game. The Cumbrians showed their pedigree by running N2N 'Dale close before eventually losing by 18-24.
They will provide excellent opposition for Fylde as both squads prepare for imminent league rugby.

Fylde’s physio/sports therapists team has been appointed for the new season. With previous Head Therapist Verity Alexander moving to Dubai, the Club has been fortunate to attract a very experienced replacement to lead the team. Jacqueline Bormann grew up in Germany and has gained considerable experience in elite sport, working as a sports therapist with Olympic sprinters and being lead therapist for a professional American Football team.
More recently she’s been involved wit...h rugby squads, including a 7s team in London and a couple of seasons at Barking RFC. She has a German physiotherapy degree, a BSc in sports therapy and is currently studying for a MSc in sports medicine at UCLan.
Providing continuity from last season, and working alongside Jackie with the 1st XV, will be sports therapist Joanna Snook. The third member of the group is newcomer and physiotherapist, Laura Jenkinson, who will be principally working with the Hawks, succeeding Karen Swarbrick.
Chairman of Rugby Roger Banks said: “We’re delighted to welcome Jackie to the Club. It’s very important to have top quality physio/sports therapy support to the 1st & Hawks squads. The professional preparation of players in advance of games, managing rehabilitation after injury and, not least, attending to players on match days, makes a great difference. The players deserve this degree of care and assistance. Jackie will be a great asset alongside Joanna and Laura.”
Jackie Boorman said: “I’m looking forward to working with Fylde over the coming season, using my previous experiences to develop sports medicine within the club.”

"The time has come for pre season to start. Starting this Sunday 5th August 10am till 11am opposite the old Pontins for so dune fitness sessions. Any boys who are entering Year 9 this year and wish to give rugby a go are more than welcome to join in."

Fylde's pre-season games are fast approaching. Both the 1st XV and the Hawks will be in action at Kirkby Lonsdale and a week later at the Woodlands to former National One opponents Ampthill & District.

Here’s another act of generosity from a local business! Lytham Dental Clinic will be providing complimentary mouthguards to Fylde’s 1st XV squad in preparation for the 2018-19 National Two season.
They will also be providing discounted deals to all other senior and colts players as well as to Mini-Juniors. Staff will be on hand at the Mini-Junior registration days on Sundays 26th August and 2nd September.
The RFU said: “We strongly recommends that mouthguards or gumshields are worn for any contact rugby sessions (both training and matches). The use of mouthguards can help to protect the teeth and face; however, there is currently no conclusive evidence that mouthguards reduce the risk of concussion. It is recommended that mouthguards are custom fitted.”
