Fylde Sand Dunes

About Fylde Sand Dunes

Enhance public appreciation and enjoyment of the Dunes.

Fylde Sand Dunes Description

St Annes Sand Dunes: the main areas of interest are the coastal habitats from Squire's Gate in the north (at the northern limit of the Fylde Council boundary), continuing southwards and eastwards around the coast to the western edge of Lytham Green; most of which is owned by Fylde or Blackpool Council.

The main aims for management of the Fylde Sand Dunes are to:

• enhance the nature conservation interest of the coastal habitats,
• improve the efficiency of the dunes and saltmarsh as soft sea-defence (with associated cost savings in maintenance of hard sea-defences) and
• enhance public appreciation and enjoyment of the dunes.

Management works to achieve these aims will include enabling natural seaward accretion of
the dunes by removing the current causes of man-induced erosion (both to increase the area of wildlife habitat and to improve the efficiency of flood defence), together with grassland and scrub management works to enhance the nature conservation value of the existing dunes.

The Dunes are also extremely important because of their flood-defence properties; both by providing a barrier to inundation and by releasing sand during storm conditions to reduce wave action. This natural coastal defence is hugely cost-effective compared to the expenses incurred in maintaining the alternative sea-walls and other hard coastal defences, and often far more efficient. While much depleted, the remnant dunes in Fylde Borough still form the most significant part of the Borough's coastal defence.

Sand dunes are also popular for informal recreation and hence indirectly generate revenue for the local economy.

It was beautiful out on the beach today. We delivered #BeachSchool for 60 Year 1 students from St John's Primary School, in Salford. We explored the beach, sand dunes, strandline and mud flats looking at all the weird and wonderful things that can be found there. We hope you had as much fun as we did! Come visit us again soon! #CoastalEducation #DayByTheSea #CoastalExplorers #MyWildLife #FunInTheSun Lancashire Wildlife Trust Living Seas North West @ParkView4U Fylde Council

Yesterday we had teams from NetworkRail and @TheGNRP who came along to one of our conservation work parties. The group planted both Marram and Lyme grass in areas of bare sand. The grasses planted will help trap and anchor the sand so it doesnt blow away, helping us to build sand dunes. Thank you so much for all your hard work. We had great fun working with you! #CoastalConservation #TeamWork #CorporateWorkParty #OutOfTheOffice #ByTheSeaside

Come along to our first ever BioBlitz on the Fylde sand dunes!! Over the two day event come down and discover what wildlife the Local Nature Reserve holds. Whether that be rare plants, butterflies or amphibians the nature reserve is one of the most important ecological sites on the Fylde coast. We will be joined by local specialists who will be identifying species found within the different habitats. There will also be interactive zones where you can go and learn about the different identification techniques wildlife recorders and ecologists use and even try for yourself. More details will follow closer to the event.
The event will be taking place on the Local Nature Reserve on Clifton Drive North opposite the Nursing home. This site is a designated SSSI due to the rarity of some of the plants found there.

Our 'Marine Litter Critters' exhibition at Park View 4U has sadly come to an end. 🦀🐡🐳🐢 Thank you to all those who came along to see it, but just because the exhibition has gone doesn't mean that you should forget about its important messages! The litter in this exhibition was collected from our local beaches. Marine plastic is a serious issue to our environment. Here are a few tips to help you reduce your plastic footprint: 1. Bring your own shopping bag 🛍 2. Carry a reusable... water bottle🧴 3. Bring your own coffee cup ☕ 4. Say no to disposable straws and cutlery🍴 5. Pack your lunch in reusable containers 🥡 6. Avoid excessive food packaging 🍱 7. Swap out your plastic toothbrush for a bamboo one😬 8. Get your milk delivered 🥛 9. Give up the chewing gum (made from a synthetic rubber aka plastic)🤭 10. Use a razor with replaceable blades instead of a disposable🛀 11. Use biodegradable glitter (glitter is a microplastic)❇️ 12. Use brown paper to wrap gifts🎁 And finally the big one... 13. With the help of volunteers and the local community, the Fylde Sand Dunes Project works hard to make the dunes a better place for both wildlife and people.
The Fylde sand dunes are an important feature of the coastline, covering approximately 80 hectares between Starr Gate in the North and Lytham in the South.
Unfortunately over the past 150 years, more than 80% of Fylde's sand dunes have been lost. This loss is mainly due to the urban expansion of the coastal towns. However,... while much depleted, the remaining dunes in Fylde make up more than 90% of Lancashire’s sand dunes, and still form the most significant part of the Borough’s coastal defence. It is therefore important that this valuable asset is protected.
This video aims to showcase the work the Fylde Sand Dunes Project is undertaking to improve the efficiency of the dunes as a soft sea-defence, enhance the nature conservation interest of the coastal habitats, and increase public appreciation and enjoyment of the dunes.

On a nice day they are a lovely place to go and because of that they can get really busy then you have to watch out to avoid the dog poo and rubbish that people don’t pick up.
