Garston Animal Rescue Description

About us…

Our Aim
Garston Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization that aims to rescue, rehabilitate and where possible rehome abandoned or unwanted animals.

Where it all began
The rescue began by chance in 1984 with the rescue of a mother cat and her new-born kittens who had been dumped in a bin in Liverpool city centre. This dreadful incident served to highlight the plight of unwanted pet animals across the city and so Garston Animal Rescue was born and in 1988 it was granted charity status.

Our Work
Due to our facilities at the moment, the majority of animals in our care are cats. There is a relentless stream of stray cats in our city and we are constantly inundated with phone calls from people either wanting to offload their cat or reporting a stray cat or cats in their area. If we have the space we will take in the cat or cats, provide veterinary treatment, which can include worming, defleaing, neutering and in many cases medical treatment for illness or injury. Where possible our aim is to rehome the cats in our care with suitable families.

Advice and Information can this title be a link?
Although we are a small charity at the moment with limited resources, we do our best to support members of the public with advice and guidance on a whole range of issues, from advice on what to do if you have lost your cat to information on caring for your pets.

What are feral cats?
Feral cats are simply cats who have had little or no human contact. When a domestic cat is dumped on the streets un-neutered it will inevitably breed. A female cat has the potential to get pregnant from 4 months old and will give birth to an average of five kittens. The kittens, who are forced to grow up with no human contact will become feral and so the cycle will continue when any of the female kittens are old enough to breed. Within months one unneutered female cat can lead to a colony of feral cats.

Our work with feral cats
We have a neuter, recover and release program for feral cats. We humanely trap feral cats, take then to the vet to be neutered, health checked, wormed and deflead. We then allow the cats to recover for a period of seven days before returning the feral cats back to their original site. We are only able to return feral cats to a site where they are being regularly fed and have adequate shelter. In too many situations feral cats are unable to be returned to their original site; this may be due to inadequate care – they may not be being fed; unsafe circumstances – they may be being persecuted by youths or very often because the area where they are living is unsuitable – a derelict building for example. In these situations the rescue, where possible, will try to offer sanctuary to these cats. This is a huge long term pressure on the rescue, when you consider the care and financial responsibility needed to sustain these cats for an average of 16 years.

What funding do we get?
None. We get no council or government funding and rely on the income from our two charity shops and donations we receive from the public.

Our future?
We aim to get proper premises where our long-term animals can run free, and where we can give sanctuary to horses and farm animals too. We also want to use part of our premises to put on events, give talks and talks on animal care, especially to children as they are our future, and the future carers of animals.

Thank you to ALL the amazing people who have adopted cats and kittens from us. We are a small rescue who try our very best. We have a non destruction policy so any cat who comes to us stays with us until they find the right home. For some this takes days, some weeks, some months and some even longer. We can only help more animals if people keep supporting us. The rescue is run by an amazing lady who works tirelessly to help as many animals as she can. If you have a moment we'd love to see some pictures of cats who have been adopted from us. Thank you ALL!

Iris, Dora, Midnight, Macca, Merlin, Toby, Rory, Poppy, Sally & Sophie & Malcy are all still waiting for new homes. If you are interested in adopting please do drop us a message. If you're not able to adopt then please SHARE to help us find the right homes for these cats :-)

This is little Malcy, he looks bigger in the picture than he is. He's only about 8 weeks old and was found on the streets on his own :-( He's a little shy but would love the opportunity to have a loving home. If you are interested in adopting him then please do drop us a message with your number.

We rehomed 2 cats yesterday which is fantastic news. Alistair (now Henry) and Amy have gone to wonderful homes where they will get an enormous amount of love. However, for every cat we re home we have a waiting list of at least 10 other cats waiting to come in. If you are interested in adopting a cat or kitten please do drop us a message. It takes us a while to get back to you sometimes as we are so busy looking after the animals so please forgive us if we don't reply straight away. Thanks Everyone x

UPDATE and bad news folks - it looks like the home for the lovely Ms Jag and her gorgeous boy may have fallen through :( So many people have asked for an update on Ms Jag well here she is :-) She has a new home to go to and we are so happy to see her doing so well.

These two beautiful boys need a loving home, somewhere nice and quiet where they will get lots of love. They are currently in foster with a calm, cat friendly dog. they are both long haired so you will have to have time to groom them both to keep their coats looking beautiful. Please drop us a message if your interested.

Toby & Rory are still waiting, 12 weeks old and must stay together. These guys need a home away from a main road. Please drop us a message if you are looking to adopt. Homecheck and adoption fee apply.

Quiet indoor home needed for Sally & Sophie. They have had at LEAST 5 homes in the last year so need somewhere stable and loving. They are both friendly and loving girls so please do drop us a message if you think you could offer them a FOREVER home. Thanks :-)

Iris is looking for an experienced cat home. She has come from a hoarding situation so is a little unsure about people. Once she trusts you she's extreamly affectionate but she needs time and patience. She can live with other cats but not young children as loud noices and sudden movements spook her a bit. If you can offer Iris a home then please do drop us a message. She's only about a year old and really deserved a better life than she's had already.

User

Midnight would like a home please, he doesnt mind other cats but he'd be just as happy on his own. He's about 3 years old and very affectionate. He gets a bit nervous about sudden movements so a home without small children would be best. If you can offer Midnight the home he deserves please drop us a message Thanks

User

BERTIE - Still waiting for his forever home. Who can offer the retirement home he deserves? He'd like to be an only cat in an adult only home. PLEASE dont over look Bertie because he's not a kitten, he deserves a home just as much as the kittens do and he'll give you lots of love in return.

User

MAGDA - This lovely older lady has been with us for some time now due to some health issues. We are looking for a local, long term Foster Home for her where she is in a less stressful environment to help her get better. She'll need to be an only cat in a quiet home as a house cat. We can provide full rescue support. If you are interested then please do drop us a message. Thanks for helping :-)

Do you recognise this poor little stray cat who's in a bit of a bad state? Taken in by us very recently and we are trying to locate owner. If you think yours please let us know (you can always message us) giving full details of your cat, including age, when went missing, neutered/not neutered, chipped/not chipped. Picture of your lost cat would be appreciated. This cat, who is currently under treatment with our fantastic vet, will be put up for adoption if owner doesn't come forward 💜💜💜 xx

We are looking for an experienced cat person who would be interested in adopting 2 younger cats. The older of the 2 is only 12 months old and we have managed to trace her back to a MINIMUM of 5 homes already! She came in with a younger cat of about 6 months old which we presume is her kitten. These cats have been through a lot but are still so loving. Pictures to follow but if you think you can offer a stable caring home for Sally & Sophie please do drop us a message so we can get in touch.
