'De Waal excels at bringing out the humanity of characters leading small lives on the fringe of huge social and political forces, struggling bravely not to be crushed by them. The “trick to time” is that it can expand or contract at will, and in creating a mature heroine with decades of history, De Waal has herself performed a feat of skilful compression' - the Guardian
Kit De Waal will be at #Gladfest18 next month talking about her 2016 best seller and Kerry Irish Novel of the Year Award winner My Name is Leon, and this year’s extraordinary follow up The Trick to Time. Tickets are only £7 so don’t miss out! http://ow.ly/bD7U30lcuSD

'Melissa Harrison's All Among the Barley is an incredible evocation of one particular corner of rural England in the 1930s. Powerful and subtle and richly detailed, this is a book that inhabits its territory, knows its people, and follows its own haunting logic. Some of the great themes of English life are tackled here – class division, the patriarchy, folklore and psychosis, creeping fascism – but rather than being simply ticked off they are instead woven into the narr...ative with great subtlety and beauty. I've been following Melissa Harrison's work with interest for some time now, and with this novel she's done what I've long suspected she would: she's written a masterpiece.' - Jon McGregor, author of Reservoir 13.
Catch Melissa Harrison talking about her new novel, All Among the Barley, at #Gladfest18. Tickets are priced at £7 - book ahead to avoid disappointment! http://ow.ly/2U9m50i5nPk

Wow, what a truly stunning place a true hidden gem. I can't wait to go again and feel very fortunate that this will be a regular visit for me for the next couple of years

The staff are so friendly and accommodating and the whole place feels like a big hug.

User

Went for lunch with Trev. A beautiful building and the food in the cafe is delicious and reasonable. Well worth a visit.

User

We went to gladstone's library last week for my birthday. We had afternoon tea. My son his new wife and baby son visiting from Australia and my husband all had a fantastic day. The library is so magical. The grounds so beautiful and the afternoon tea was so gorgeous. The staff, so kind, friendly and helpful. I have recommended it to my friends. I can't wait to go again

User

Very interesting and super awesome. If only there was something like that here. What a beautiful library How much a night is this? Checkout is?

User

This was such a delight. I was brought here as a surprise by my daughter for my 50th birthday and I was amazed. Not only had I not realised that there was a library here, but to be able to come and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of this historic building along with a glimpse of Gladstone's library - a must-see for everyone!! The food was excellent; staff were pleasant and helpful and all-in-all, a fantastic couple of hours. I would highly recommend this place to anybody visiting the area and especially to locals, like me, who have yet to experience this undiscovered treasure.

User

The kind of place you go to when you need to feed your soul. Magical...Harry Potter meets Inspector Morse. Staff lovely too. Not sure if I should say too many good things as I kinda want to keep this place to myself 😊🙊.

User

Such an absolute pleasure staying here. It is brimming with history and great energy. The building is beautiful and the reading rooms are utterly inspiring. The food and drink followed suit; simple but perfect for me. I cannot wait to come for other visits with other library nerds such as myself.

Incredible place fantastic surroundings, the library has a peaceful aura about it, staff Incredibly kind throughout our stay and the photo shoot thank you so much!

User

I'm privileged to have Gladstone's Library on my doorstep. Well, actually, it's an hour's drive away but I thoroughly enjoyed popping up there on Sunday to spend an hour listening to Nadene Ghouri talk about the three memoirs she's ghostwritten. Gladstone's is an excellent resource in so many ways.

User

I knew this was going to be a great visit. Staying overnight in a library in Wales? How could that not be good. However, I was unprepared for just how wonderful it is. Beyond the library itself, which is amazing the building and grounds are gorgeous, the nearby church is fantastic, there are a few statues about that I really enjoyed, the food was great, the staff was great, our accommodations were perfect and the common areas were so lush with big comfy couches, fires, throws and pillows an honesty bar and just wonderful atmosphere all around. I can't imagine anyone not having a wonderful time here.

User

I have just come to the end of my scholarship here at Gladstone, and I would like to offer that the people are as wonderful as the environment they nurture. Gladstone is a unique place in my experience, one of value to my learning experience and academic work to date.

Thank you guys! I'll be back... :)

User

An excellent introductory talk and noon tour of the Gladstone Library. Thank you.

User

All the positives have been said by others and I endorse them all, but especially the friendly welcome by the staff team. This matches the embrace that the building provides - not many stone-built places give you a hug when you arrive! I'm a big fan!

User

A fabulous lunch, followed by a couple of hours in the most peaceful place in North Wales. I had to drag myself away....but I'll be back in time for Sunday lunch!
