Glastonbury Abbey Description

A hidden jewel in the heart of Somerset, Glastonbury Abbey is known as England's cradle of Christianity and is the resting place for three Saxon kings and the legendary King Arthur.

Wonderful! The admission wasn't too expensive and the museum has a lot of history and artifacts! Well put together and maintained! The staff is also very friendly the tour was truly a history lesson! The abbey ruins are magical and leave you to open your mind to build what you think the abbey was!

User

What a great place to visit during our UK visit last month. Our guide in monk's costume was brilliant and gave a great running commentary on the history of the Abbey, delivered with a nice serve of humour. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and well worth the entrance fee.

User

The whole place is an absolute oasis of calmness. I’ve spent two years in Glastonbury and never went in. In fairness I had no idea it was so big. Sentia bought us both annual passes and I cannot thank her enough! It’s a polar opposite of the often too lively High street.

I need to be outdoors to create the artwork I work with. I create Solar art, I need sunshine and I need a calmness around me that I cannot achieve in town. I taught Sentia how to create using the same process in the grounds, so already it has a special place in my heart.

Sentia and I have taken to work on art within the Abbey grounds and it’s just the most beautiful place I’ve seen in Somerset.

User

Such a magnificent place! Every inch of it is imposing and emanates spiritual calmness.

The staff is kind and helpful.

We had an amazing time there!

User

Spend almost every lunchtime in the Abbey. Beautiful all year round and whatever the weather.

User

Peaceful and beautiful. A great place! I went with my kids (10 and 6) and they enjoyed the visit as much as I did. Magical!

User

Not being an historical person I was unsure whether to go here. On arrival it was £7.50 to get in which I thought was expensive as I could see some ruins from outside. However the wife and I decided to have a look. Well what can I say....best entrance fee I have paid. We went in and looked through the museum area which was interesting but too much to take in. However they do a guided tour of the grounds which lasts about 40 minutes. The guide not only talked through his script but was able to answer any questions. There is so much inside that you can't see from outside. Apart from the ruins there are lakes, herb gardens and a lot of interesting ruins and facts. Think our guide was 'Brother David ' but not sure. However he wore a monks costume and a white straw hat as he was balding. Well done Brother David. Thoroughly recommend this place for a visit.

I’m very late in writing this review but really wanted to thank Saffy for the fantastic job she did with the baby and toddler group in the summer. Toby and I are very much looking forward to coming back in the spring :)

User

If you are in the area and love a bit of medieval history, this is the place for you. John “The Gardener” was an excellent and knowledgable tour guide. Thanks for an enjoyable morning

User

I really enjoyed my experience here. It felt like the best kept secret full of great history accompanying such serenity. The tour guide was full of facts and brought he place alive. I can't wait to go back again! The price was brilliant especially as we could come back as many times during the day!

User

I lived near the area before and don't be bothered to see as it has entrance fee and outside is just ruins, but to my surprise it is beautiful inside, I recommend to join the tour as it will give your more insight. Highly recommended!!!

User

I have been to Glastonbury Abbey many times and it never disappoints. It has an air of calmness and serenity that is priceless in these mad times. Even with quite a lot of people walking around, there is space enough to relax and revel in the tranquillity.

And what a lovely lady in the tea room. My son, who has autism, was not in the best of moods and I was trying to deal with this whilst pushing my mother around in a wheelchair.

I think this lady knew I was feeling the strain and told me how she understood. It was just so nice for someone to say I was doing ok and recognising how tough it can be. She made my day so much brighter by her kindness. Please pass on my heartfelt thanks.

User

Beautiful. Peaceful. A great place to just 'be'. I love it.

User

Amazing and historical place. Very special for Catholics in UK, as there are their roots, sadly forgotten by most of them, they should refresh the memory about beginning of christianity in UK and start regulary pilgrimage there from all over the county, as it was in the past. Every tree is dying without roots. And this is what happend with catholics in UK. But there is still enough believers to watering this place by pilgrimage and prayer and the tree of life will bear fruits and UK shall be again catholic country as it was for 16 centuries. Please share.

User

A very special place with such beautiful energy.

User

A fantastic place! and worth every penny! It was a beautiful day, cold but fine (we were there on the 5th Jan) I have wanted to go there since I was a kid and now at 36 I finally can say I've been and loved it! and we enjoyed doing the brass rubbings too, the young lady at the ticket office was so lovely, thank you!

Wild animals should be respected and have the right to choose their own homes. It's just cruel to put them under distress and cause them confusion . But to be honest I am not surprised at this unchristian behaviour FROM AN ABBEY. Seems like you need to go back to that black book called the bible and learn it all over again .

Once again the church shows double standards by displaying gold symbols of wealth but showing no true Christian behaviour

User

The abbey was really beautiful from the gates, however we arrived at the doors 1 minute after 5:30 after having problems with the parking meters, where it was not accepting the newer 1 pound coins. When my group (of 5) and 2 other parties that made up ten of us total tried to get in the lady working the door was very short and unsympathetic towards our situation, where there city's meters didn't work properly. After all of us explaining that we traveled from all different parts of the globe (Canada, India, UK) to see this one spectacular heritage site, she still could not manage an I'm sorry but we're closed. She treated us like we were dirt and just closed the door on us.
