About Gordale Garden Centre

Set in 15 beautiful acres, Gordale is an award-winning garden and home centre with a loyal team of helpful experts to ensure your visit is a memorable one.

Gordale Garden Centre Description

Established in 1948, Gordale is one of the oldest garden centres in Britain and has continued to grow and expand ever since. Gordale was originally bought by Harold and Joyce Nicholson whilst they worked on a farm in Wiltshire. They arrived by motorbike and sidecar, along with their six ducks, while their cows followed by train before being walked from Hooton station to Gordale. We’ve always been a bit different! Initially Gordale operated as a smallholding, producing goods for the local markets, and the original cafe was famous for its chicken salads – a luxury during the rationing of WW2.

In 1949, Gordale was set to be sold at auction, with Harold and Joyce planning a new life in Canada. However, whilst many bids were received, the highest failed to meet the reserve price by just £50. Instead it was decided to stay and make a go of it and we’re so happy they did! Over the years, trade increased and goods had to be bought in to supplement those produced on site to cope with the nation’s growing interest in gardening.

In 1979, after studying horticulture in England and Holland Mr and Mrs Nicholson's son Peter Nicholson took over the company. Today, Gordale remains at the forefront of garden centre retailing. We never stand still. We always have lovely ideas in the pipeline. We would like to invite you to come and see why we are one of Cheshire’s leading garden and home centres and why, over the years, we’ve won ‘Britain’s Best Garden Retailer’, ‘Independent Retail Outlet of the Year’ and ‘Garden Centre of the Year’.

What fantastic service. We live in Shropshire but had visited the centre with family who lived nearby. We bought some patio furniture and arranged for delivery. What we didn’t expect was that the owner, his wife and 94 year old mother would deliver it. Hats off to such service.

User

We actually came to gordale grotto after a bad experience at another grotto (in which we did not end up seeing santa). Very short notice...I rang up gordale and managed to book a slot over the phone as I had just missed the 1.30pm cut off. We were told to go to customer services to collect our booking slots on arrival. When we did we were escorted to the grotto to ensure our names had been added to list which they had. There were only a couple of children in front of us which left us plenty of time to take photos in the sleigh and admire the lovely grotto! The staff were lovely and played their characters very well! The elves were particularly fun and paid lots of attention to our boys (aged 3 and 4). Santa was fab an spent time talking to them while another elf was helping us to take photos and getting involved in the conversations! I hope the charity raises lots of money! Well done for a great grotto. Cheap prices, great gifts, 10 min wait, fun interaction and beautiful authentic grotto!! Loved it.

User

Just taken our little girl (who is 3 years old) to see Santa for the very first time and just wanted to say well done to all the staff it was such a lovely experience!!! The staff were all great and kept us informed as to how long we had to wait (there was a bit of queue but that is to be expected the big man is very popular!!!) The elves were lovely and gave our little girl, who is very shy, lots of praise when she chatted to Santa. Santa was fabulous, very authentic, such a lovely manner with our little girl and she left delighted with him and her lovely gift. Well done Gordale and thank you for making our little ones first visit to Santa so magical.

User

I think I could of spent the day there and not seen it all. Biggest Garden Centre I have ever seen. Will go again when in the area and get to see more. Looking forward to trying my Lime Curd.

User

Great place to look around, lots of fresh plants and veg.

Finished off with a sit down in the cafe, lovely sunny morning.

Great place to go on a Saturday morning 👨🏼‍🌾

User

Gordale has some of the best events and the most beautiful healthy plants. And over the years it has got a wider variety of other products. The cafe is also really nice and reasonably priced lovely couple of hours out for all the family

User

Friends Club is great and the offers are good but the restaurant offers aren’t too helpful as I visit on my own. February 2018 offer is buy one panini get one free. Why not half price for one panini for a Friends club member on their own?

Great staff there too.

User

Excellent customer service! Special shout out to the gentleman who helped me with a problem I had with a patio gas canister. He was so friendly and eager to help. We will be regular customers from now on.

User

Brilliant...took my little girl to see Santa, he was amazing, she sat on his knee and told him what she wanted. He was really patient and lovely. The grotto was so pretty from the start to the end. And of course she loves her gift...a cute little teddy bear.

User

Lovely afternoon out and great cafe, lots and lots to peruse from ornaments to cloths to furniture to indeed everything you could want for your garden

User

Great. Just don’t go with a terrible hangover and two women who like to dawdle around at the pace of two sloths, discussing how nice everything is. Also, last time I went to visit Santa at a less opulent establishment, I swear he was drunk. So this year, meeting a Santa who I swear might actually be the real Santa was a fantastic bonus.

May I suggest that you develop an area to leave sleep deprived, miserable partners until they can be retrieved and hence spared the experience of deciding on the correct size and flourish of a myriad of Poinsettia plants.

Thanks.

User

Although this ia no longer our local garden centre we bisit quite often on our to Southport from North Wales! The plants here are always fresh and look amazing we hardly ever call without buying some plant/s or another! The scones in the cafe are huge and delicious but breakfast dissapointing as toast is an extra on top( not a cheap extra either)

User

The cost of a bottle of water in the cafe is disgusting...£1.50 for 270ml.... that makes it £5.55 pet litre. Petrol only costs £1.27 pet litre. DISGUSTING

User

I've seen it grow over the years from a few glass houses selling plants to a department store where you can buy clothes, ornaments, kitchen equipment and plants. Sadly the majority of items are now overpriced - e.g. the Weber BBQs are at least £50 less elsewhere - so its more of a place to look around than a place to buy. The coffee shop is ok but again its expensive especially for what you get. Most places offer you tea in a pot or at least an individually wrapped tea bag but on my last visit they were loose bags in a bowl, not great when being charged £2 a cup. Shame.

User

Took my 9 yr old granddaughter to the carving a pumpkin at the garden centre. We asked a member of staff where this was held & although she gave us directions, she didn’t say we had to pay at reception before hand. Maybe all staff should be made aware of this. So we were sent back to the front entrance.

There are members of staff who explain how to crave the pumpkin, then they walk away. Your children are encouraged to use the little sharp knives and I was really concerned as the knife kept slipping (accident waiting to happen). Also the knives are left in a bowl on the table, young children are walking around as their parents are making the pumpkins with their other children (anyone of these children could grab hold of one). Just felt there wasn’t enough health & safety thought through with this activity.

Although I was helping my granddaughter with her pumpkin, I noticed there was only one member of staff supervising the activity as the other one was supervising the grotto. Value for money NO, I wish I had bought a pumpkin at the local shop (£1.50) & carved it at home.

User

So travelled with my 3 grandchildren ages 6/3 and 2 to suprise them at santas grotto as we approach I said millie what does that say' she reads santas grotto this way so she tells the little ones there all excited theres no one there except a elf lady and says have you got tickets now it doesnt suggest tickets are needed so they ruin 3 little childrens time what santa turns 3 kids away and especially having no one waiting I thought that was terrible in the end we went to the one in ellesmere port by the harvester they fed the reindeers had rides watched a elf show which was great and then saw santa it saved the day no thanks to gordale garden centre

Review regarding the santa grotto not the garden centre—-An hour to wait for pre-booked slot with kids all increasingly twitchy sucking the joy and magic out of what should have been a special time and no way is it worth £6.50 a head.

User

No signs informing customers that dogs are not welcome. Extremely rude and aggressive staff insisting the dog was carried or put in a trolley. Had every intention of spending quite a large amount of money so their over zealous staff lost some major sales. One member of staff stated ‘ put what you like on any review - we don’t care!’

User

Im so angry at the person playing Father Christmas. He beard wasn't on right, he kept calling my daughter who's name is Talitha, Lisa. My girls picked up on everything wrong, and he got her age wrong with the gift. Father Christmas is suppose to be magical for children. His acting was appalling. The set up and surrounding was lovely, but was completely ruined by Father Christmas. Its hard enough to keep childrens belief in Santa these days when children are growing up too fast. We were really hoping for one more year with out 8 year old, but even our 6 year old was left unsure after that. We purposely only take them to see Santa once, so they don't pick up on different looks and same questions been asked. But honestly I'm so dissapointed, and so gutted for my girls. I never write bad reviews, i just don't comment, but i felt i had to today, as our build up to Christmas and visiting santa was ruined.

Santa was fab an spent time talking to them while another elf was helping us to take photos and getting involved in the conversations! I hope the charity raises lots of money! Well done for a great grotto. Cheap prices, great gifts, 10 min wait, fun interaction and beautiful authentic grotto!! Loved it.

I think I could of spent the day there and not seen it all. Biggest Garden Centre I have ever seen. Will go again when in the area and get to see more. Looking forward to trying my Lime Curd.

Great place to look around, lots of fresh plants and veg.

Finished off with a sit down in the cafe, lovely sunny morning.

Great place to go on a Saturday morning 👨🏼‍🌾

Gordale has some of the best events and the most beautiful healthy plants. And over the years it has got a wider variety of other products. The cafe is also really nice and reasonably priced lovely couple of hours out for all the family

Friends Club is great and the offers are good but the restaurant offers aren’t too helpful as I visit on my own. February 2018 offer is buy one panini get one free. Why not half price for one panini for a Friends club member on their own?

Great staff there too.

Excellent customer service! Special shout out to the gentleman who helped me with a problem I had with a patio gas canister. He was so friendly and eager to help. We will be regular customers from now on.

Brilliant...took my little girl to see Santa, he was amazing, she sat on his knee and told him what she wanted. He was really patient and lovely. The grotto was so pretty from the start to the end. And of course she loves her gift...a cute little teddy bear.

Thanks.

The cost of a bottle of water in the cafe is disgusting...£1.50 for 270ml.... that makes it £5.55 pet litre. Petrol only costs £1.27 pet litre. DISGUSTING

Shame.
