The Mayni are an indigenous community living in the Satipo area in Peru. They live in an area that is only reachable by 4x4 and still protect themselves with handmade bow and arrows. They live a very traditional way of life but have managed to produce a crop that can be sold to an international market.
“For the five years before José was introduced to the indigenous Mayni community, they had been the benefactors of sponsorship that enabled them to grow coffee as sustainably a...s possible while ensuring maximum protection to the forest. This sponsorship came in the form of agricultural consultation and financial support from the Peruvian Government and the conservation group Programa Nacional del Conservación de Bosques para la Mitigación del Cambio Climatic (roughly translating to The National Program of Forest Conservation for the Mitigation of Climate Change). As the sponsorship came to an end, José and his company Easy José Coffee began working with the Mayni, and over the past three years not only has his support and feedback has seen incredible change to their harvesting and processing of coffee, it’s also ensured that the community can continue to thrive in their traditional and chosen way of life.”
Here’s a bit about ‘why it matters’:
“Coffee plants thrive in biodiverse environments, they love growing in warm shaded areas, which is provided in abundance by the taller trees that make up the forest canopy. Coffee trees - like most plants - require a rich, nutrient dense soil, and since the rainforest floor is essentially the world’s largest compost heap, it goes without saying that the plants flourish there. The people who grow and harvest coffee have a responsibility to care for the forests and the land. We have a responsibility to trade fairly with them and encourage an upward spiral of care and respect to people and planet alike.”
