Yes you are right, its cheaper and even more eco to be buried or cremated in a shroud (cloth cover). You don't (legally) need a coffin at all in the UK, just a shroud with a base board. But check! there are different rules in different regions and it depends on if its private or public. You can make your own shroud too - make sure the materials good. Heres my design.
