All board! as the Millerbeck Light Railway returns this bank holiday Sunday & Monday. Described as Lakeland's best kept secret, just around the corner from us in Stavely-in-Cartmel; this charming miniature 7¼" gauge railway is perfect for all ages as it meanders through meadows, woodlands and crossing the millerbeck stream. Original construction dates back to 1985; but the current owners and a group of volunteers lovingly maintain the line for all to enjoy on these special occasions.

All our suites are individually styled but all share a prominent view of Lake Windermere. Room 55 boasts a double length room, with spacious lounge and bedroom, fabulous Lakeviews (even on this day in early Spring!) and a bathroom with separate bath & shower. Could this be yours next time you stay with us?

We always get asked where are the best walks and we are lucky enough to have an absolute abundance in the Lakes!
One collection of walks we particularly receive lots of positive reviews about is 'Miles without Stiles'; a series of wheelchair & buggy friendly walks; perfect for all the family, that still get fabulous views and perfect for those slightly less adventurous.
Why not take a stroll next time your here...

Greetings from the Gardens!
I wanted to take a moment to write about a sometimes maligned genus of plant, the Crocosmia. I say sometimes maligned because when we think of Crocosmia we often think of that thuggish variety seen in many a neglected garden, Montbretia. With it’s very pretty orange flowers, growing on stems borne above long strap like foliage, Montbretia (often just referred to as Crocosmia) is invasive and a real chore to eradicate or at least keep contained. ...
However ‘Lucifer’ is not invasive like common Montbretia and is substantially taller with dark red flowers, a great choice for height, colour and form and provided it has space to grow and support to keep it upright it will add a dramatic touch to any garden.Mid-summer and into Autumn is when Crocosmia are out in full colour and here at Lakeside Hotel we have several really beautiful varieties (and well behaved one’s at that!);
- ‘George Davison’ is a short growing variety. Growing up to 40cms and with light yellow flowers it is a great choice for the front of a border or shown off in a favourite pot or tub.
- C. ‘Hellfire’ is a taller variety (up to 1.5 mtrs) with flowers very similar to above although they are smaller and more compact and a slightly lighter shade of red.
- We also have growing here a real stunner C. ‘Okavango’. ‘Okavango’ is especially attractive with its orange marmalade coloured flowers.
We have also recently introduced another beauty named C. ‘Twilight Fairy Gold’. Another compact variety with yellow/orange flowers borne above compact bronze coloured foliage. Check out C. ‘Twilight Fairy Crimson’ & ‘Vulcan’ too that have hot toned variety to warm up any drab spaces.
If you want to introduce some terrific architectural plants into your garden and which sport flowers in the hot colour spectrum then Crocosmia might be worth considering. These insect friendly plants require little to no maintenance during the growing season (occasional feeding will be welcome and they do prefer full sun though part shade will be ok). They are drought tolerant and can withstand the cold winter’s certainly here in The Lake District. With an increasing array of modern varieties becoming available I think there is more to Crocosmia than the common Montbretia, a group of plants well worth a place in any flowering garden.

Our Head Chef's been a busy bee as we've installed our very first bee hive earlier this month!
It's been a passion of Richard's for some time to curate our very own Lakeside's Bees and produce our own honey in a step to become more self-sufficient.
Do keep an eye out for updates as we continue to monitor their progress and the kitchen develops some tasty honey-inspired menu offerings!
