Lancaster Castle Description

Why not take a tour around one of the UK's most significant historic monuments.
Lancaster Castle also has a programme of special events throughout the year. More details can be found on the website www. lancastercastle.com

With origins dating all the way back to the Romans, this fascinating collection of buildings has been a centre for justice, incarceration and penal reform for almost 1, 000 years.

Our knowledgeable and friendly tour guides will take you through tales of witchcraft, religious persecution, crime and punishment, rehabilitation and release throughout the ages.
You will get to stand in the dock, raise your left hand to be sworn in and understand the meaning of 'to be sent down'. You can try out one of our medieval cells for size and enjoy one of Europe's most extensive collection of heraldic shields hanging on the walls of the breathtaking Shire Hall. From Richard the Lionheart to Elizabeth II, all the Monarchs of England are represented there, together with the High Sheriffs of Lancashire, from 1189 to the present day.

The tour finishes in C-Wing where you can view cells used up until 2011 before being 'released' to enjoy the rest of your day.

Please note: While every effort is made to open these buildings up for public viewing, Lancaster Castle is still used as a Crown Court. If the Court is sitting, it may not be possible to view all rooms. Similarly, restoration works underway at the Castle to repair its historic fabric mean that public access to all areas of the Castle is subject to public safety and security considerations.

TICKET PRICES:

Adults £8,
Concessions £6. 50,
Family £20 (Our family tickets are flexible: two adults and up to any two concessions or one adult and any three concessions)

Accompanying Registered Carers are admitted free.

Access into the castle can be restrictive, due to uneven surfaces, staircases and cobbles.

Please note that young people under the age of sixteen must be accompanied by an adult.

If you have any questions about access or booking tours for your visit, please call us on 01524 64998

Went on Friday 29th June. Really enjoyed it and we paid £8 each for a guided tour. David the guide was really knowledgeable and informative...well worth the money! Would recommend this to anyone!

User

We are locals so have been to the tour several times, it would be great to see more of the castle now it holds no prisoners! We appreciate it will cost to renovate, but would be great to walk round it is!

User

Very nice old building, worth a visit and guided tour is just £8 , very freindly and helpful staff. Would off been nice to actually go up in the corridor bits of the cells but still good value, great day out..

User

The tour was fantastic, my kids loved it, I would happily do it all again and will recommend it to everyone passing by Lancaster. Thanks again.

User

Thanks to Cameron for an incredibly detailed, fun and fantastic historical tour of the castle. I was so impressed by his knowledge and talent as a guide, from reeling off dates like they were second nature to creating amazing atmosphere in some of the more ‘macabre’ areas of the castle.

I’d really recommend this tour. One of the best hours I’ve spent.

User

Perfect services! All five stars for very nice staff!

User

Our guide today was super amazing... she was so funny and a joy really... I think her name is Sandra

User

Myself and my now husband Adrian got married here in the Shire Hall on the 19th May 2018. It was a brilliant day, sun was shining and the setting was perfect. I would highly recommend this as a venue if you're getting married. On behalf of Adrian and I, we would like to thank all the staff at the castle and to Colin who we arranged the ceremony with. Also thanks to the wonderful registrars.

User

Just had the Castle tour .It was very informative with an extremely entertaining guide named Cameron who clearly loves his job.

User

I would recommend anyone interested in the history of the area to take this fantastic tour. Christopher was our guide and he was fantastic, informative as well as dramatic and was very knowledgeable. We had my 9 year old Grandson with us that likes to know everything and always has questions, Christopher knew the answer to all his questions and more. We will definitely be back once the restoration work is done

User

I loved my guided tour of Lancaster Castle and learned not only the history of the Castle but of the north west as well will definitely be going again soon

User

Had a great tour of Lancaster castle - a castle, a prison and functioning court all in one. Steeped in horrible history. Expertly guided by Eleanor

User

Eleanor showed us around on a tour today. Myself and my husband and our children really enjoyed it. She is very knowledgeable and really got into character when speaking about the pendle witch trials. Thanks

User

Brilliant time at Lancaster Castle today. We had a brilliant tour guide at 3:30pm. The lady was brilliant, even though we’ve been before , we learned new facts and the kids loved the gruesome stories too! Thank you again!

User

After driving the Pendle witch trail and arriving at Lancaster Castle, we went on the guided tour the guide (think his name was David) was very knowledgeable and friendly. It's just a shame that alot of the Castle is inaccessible due to the court and refurbishment works. All in all though we enjoyed it.

User

Absolutely fascinating place, our tour was given by a lady called Sarah who knew EVERYTHING and with a very personable character. I found the gay history of this fortress/prison incredible and the locking up of one man caught kissing. We loved it all and lucky enough to tour the courts as well and its modern day history. This is must if you are in Lancaster. Five stars here and look forward to visiting again..one point ask to go in the cell thats haunted..if you dare!

User

A fun & informative tour (thanks James, you were brilliant!) which we wished had been longer than an hour! Kids thought it was great (especially the older one who loves torture & spooky stuff). Hope over the next few years the open parts of the Castle are extended so we can see more, we'd love to spend all afternoon there. Only downside? Tea Rooms not open so we couldn't have a brew & a bun sat out in the sunshine

User

I went to the world war 1 day, which added to the day, whilst there we decided to take the tour of the castle as it been a good few years since I have been round and my partner never had been round. The tour was very informative. The only two points I could say where a bit of a disappointment where the tour was very much as every other tour I have had of the castle , I was hoping to see a lot more of the castle that would be open to the public. The other point is the price of drinks from the site tend to be on the expensive side.

User

I went to school in Lancaster in the 1970's and hadn't been to the Castle since then. On a recent visit to the city I had an hour to spare and decided to do the Castle Tour. I'm really glad I did; it was fun and informative, the guide was knowledgeable and funny, it was great value and a wonderful spectacle; the courtrooms are fabulous. I'd definitely recommend a visit there, and if you're going, take the tour!
