Keeping cool this summer 🌞
Over the summer, we sometimes see animals with signs of overheating or heat stroke. This usually happens after your animal has been outside for what would usually be a normal amount of time, but in hot weather causes the body to overheat.
Signs of overheating... If your animal has overheated, they may pant (dogs) or breathe quickly (cats and small furries), seem lethargic or collapse. Their gums are often discoloured, and your animal may vomit. Occasionally, animals will start convulsing. In this case, you must contact a vet IMMEDIATELY.
How to prevent your animal from overheating; It possible, walk dogs in the early morning or late evening in order to avoid the warmest times of day. If this is not possible, keep walks very short, only 5-10 minutes long.
Special care should be taken to avoid exercising working dogs. Fresh water should also be carried to prevent working dogs from drinking unclean water, which may cause further problems.
For cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and other small furries, ensure that there are plenty of shaded areas to shelter, especially if your pet will be outside for long periods of time.
Plenty of water should be available at all times for all pets.
Animals should never be left in hot cars.
Treatment If you are concerned about your pet having overheated, please call us on 01638560000. We may advise that you cool your pet on the way to the surgery.
