Liverpool College for Girls

Liverpool Girls' College Est.1856 Closed 1981 Description

Liverpool College For Girls opened on 29th October, 1878. It was opened by the Right Honourable Countess Of Derby. In 1889 a sale of work raised £600 which funded a lending library. The classrooms were redecorated, the laboratory was fitted with benches and the lecture room with a gallery and table. In 1893 the old gymnasium was made into a cloakroom. Then in 1909 the school hall was fitted out as a gymnasium. The same year, electric lighting was fitted at a cost of £130. 19. 6.
In 1912 one of the top rooms was converted into a kitchen with two large gas ovens. Between 1922-24, extensive improvements were made to the school. In 1940 the junior cloak room was made into an air raid shelter.
During the 1970s there were many improvements made to the school. Also at that time, the area surrounding the school changed dramatically with many of the surrounding houses demolished and the University Of Liverpool taking over more of the land adjacent to the school. In 1981, LGC was amalgamated with St. Edmunds College and became Archbishop Blanch School in Sefton Park Road. In 1993 the school moved to its current location in Mount Vernon Road.
Early information taken from the LGC Centenary Year Book 1978.

I only have a limited number of images from my time there and always ensure the page is for everyone who went to LGC over the years. I am proud that the page is proving to be very popular and reunites friends..long may it continue to be so.

Liverpool Girls' College Est.1856 Closed 1981... · Does anyone know a Mary McMillan who would have attended this school in 1901 and 1902? Or if their mother's knew Mary McMillan of Liverpool England? Mary became the Mother of Physical Therapy in America and I am writing a biography about her on behalf of her family. I understand the school was closed and there is no records of her time there. Anyone who has class photos or other photos can you please email me at intutitivetrust@yahoo.com ?
