Lymm May Queen Festival Description

History of Lymm May Queen Festival

The first festival in Lymm was held in 1889, and was then known as Lymm and Oughtrington Bank of Hope Festival. At that time the Queen was chosen from various Chapels in turn. The very first Queen was Miss Amy Astley and she was chosen from the Congregational Church. Just how long this method of choosing was continued has not been ascertained, but it would appear that after many years the Committee was disbanded and the Festival ceased to be an annual event.

During 1947 the Lymm May Queen Festival Society was reformed by an enthusiastic group of people, who proceeded to make a success of it to such an extent that they were able to help various local charities, Lymm Clothing Charities, Lymm British Legion, Cancer Research, Cotebrook Home, and they also took the children who took part in the festivals on a visit to Southport.

Presently the May Queen supports lots of local charities, the money donated to charity is that which is collected on route of the procession, with the money raised on the field helping to offset the staging of the festival.
