Madeley Practice Ear Irrigation Leaflet
If you feel that you may have wax in your ears then our Practice Nurses are happy to assess you for the need for irrigation (syringing). However, if you are experiencing pain, discharge or have a history of a perforated eardrum, you should make an appointment to see a GP before you book an appointment with the nurse.
... What is Ear Wax? Ear wax is a naturally occurring substance which protects your ear canal. The quantity of wax varies greatly from person to person and some people form plugs of wax in their ear canal. A hard plug of wax can cause a feeling of fullness and dulled hearing. It can also sometimes cause tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or even mild vertigo (a type of dizziness). A plug of wax is not usually a serious problem, more a nuisance. You only need to remove wax if it is causing symptoms such as dulled hearing. Wax may also need to be removed for fitting of a hearing aid or if a doctor or nurse needs to examine your ear drum. It is important that you never try to clean the ear canal with cotton wool buds as this can make things worse by pushing the wax deeper inside.
How to apply Olive oil correctly Once seen by a nurse or GP we recommend the use of Olive oil drops or spray (Earol) to soften the wax which can be purchased from the pharmacy. The drops or spray should be used twice daily for at least 5 days using the following instructions (drops only) – • Lie on your side with the effected ear uppermost • Pull the outer ear backwards and upwards • Drop 2 – 3 drops of oil, at room temperature, into the ear canal and massage the area just in front of the ear • Remain lying down for 5 minutes and then wipe away any excess oil. Do not leave cotton wool at the entrance to the ear • Repeat the procedure for the other ear if necessary Ear Irrigation
This is an invasive procedure that we would only recommend after wax softening for a minimum of 5 days up to 2 weeks. There are several risks with this procedure including Dizziness, Tinnitus, Inflammation/ Infection and damage to the ear or eardrum such as a perforation. Ear Irrigation may not be advised in the following circumstances • Previous ear surgery • Have a cleft palate (even if it has been repaired) • Recurring infections of the ear canal • Have or have had a perforated ear drum • Have had a middle ear infection in the previous 6 weeks • If you have tinnitus • Dizziness
If ear irrigation is not successful, or not advised, you may be advised to continue with olive oil and come back at another date or you may be referred for micro-suctioning

Please be vigilant when out walking
We have had a report of an incident locally. We understand there is a character in a small red car with squeeky brakes coming to the area who has exposed himself. The police have been contacted.
Please remain aware when you are out walking, let people know where you are going and if something doesn't feel right walk away or call 101 for advice.
