About Manchester Christmas Markets

Manchester’s award-winning Christmas Markets returns this winter

Manchester Christmas Markets Description

Don your Santa hat, dust off the mulled wine glass, and get into the festive spirit - it’s time to head down to Manchester’s world famous Christmas Market.

Attracting shoppers from all over the UK and beyond, the market has put Manchester city centre firmly on the Christmas map – the Christmas Market has become not just a fabulous place to shop but also a hugely popular leisure destination in its own right. No Mancunian winter is complete without a wander through the chalet-lined streets of the markets.

Last year, the Christmas Markets spread over 10 different spaces around the city, each with its own distinct character and atmosphere:

Albert Square | Brazennose Street | St Ann's Square | Exchange Street | New Cathedral Street | The Corn Exchange | King Street | Market Street | Exchange Square | Cathedral Gardens

Manchester’s award-winning Christmas Markets returns this winter offering mouth-watering international food, drinks and delicately crafted Yuletide gifts in the heart of this buzzing city.

With nearly 350 beautifully festooned stalls and chalets spanning 10 distinctive market sites across the city centre, the Christmas Markets are free and accessible to all.

Soak up the atmosphere and follow the market trail as it winds through the city centre, tempting you with gifts, crafts, jewellery, clothes and toys. The choice is getting bigger every year. European and local producers offer everything from fine amber jewellery, handcrafted leather bags and top-quality bonsai trees, to handmade Belgian kitchenware, framed photo prints and French soaps.

And when planning your visit, don’t miss the amazing array of food and drink! Manchester’s Christmas Markets are famous for traditional bratwurst but you can also treat yourself to Hungarian goulash, Spanish paella or a good old-fashioned hog roast.

Plenty of vegetarian options will be on offer, and for those with a sweet tooth the choices are even more mouth-watering, such as Dutch mini pancakes or French profiteroles!

Relax with a hot chocolate, German or Spanish beer, or French wine. Soak up the atmosphere of a truly international event with a uniquely Mancunian flavour.

Make a date in your diary to come along, enjoy yourself, and help us make Christmas 2016 the best year ever!

And with all glasses and mugs returnable as part of an environmentally friendly deposit scheme, your Christmas markets are greener than ever.

Amazing shot of the Christmas Markets from the Manchester police helicopter.

The worker bee has been a symbol of Manchester since the 19th century, but this year it’s become particularly important as a symbol of the city’s community spirit and resilience.
We’ve seen it pop up in lots of ways, with everything from tattoos and beautiful artwork, to unique jewellery and clothing. There’s even a bee hotel.
Now Manchester Arndale is giving away exclusive Christmas bee baubles in a festive-themed social media initiative.

Winter in the city is always an adventure.
You’ve skated – or maybe shuffled a bit and wondered if you’re too old to use one of the penguin aids – on the rink at First Street.
You’ve wandered around the Christmas Markets, consumed an oversized German sausage and feigned interest in purchasing a round of cheese as you reach for your eighth sample.
... But eventually, your nose is red and your fingers are starting to turn blue. You need warming up.
You could have the traditional gluhwein, or even a mug of marshmallow-laden hot chocolate. But if, like me, you’re a gin lover, there is another way.
Forget the hot toddy and head to Mr Thomas's Chop House for something more, well, juniper-led.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more Christmassy, something else turns up. Christmas igloos outside The Refinery at Spinningfields.

Heavy snowfall expected this weekend – but will we have a White Christmas?

We visited the Christmas markets yesterday. They were spread out over various areas and there was plenty of choice in all areas. It wasn't to busy but rained all day. Shame about the weather but we still had a good day.

User

Visited Manchester Dec 18 th / 20 th , Family treat for our 30 th . Loved the markets , wasn't as busy as weekends . Great Northern Soul played on the Northern Soul cheese stall , and the Yummy Hog Roast . Reassuring to see all the armed police circulating .

User

Very expensive, but a lovely atmosphere. Was a bit wet when we went, but a lovely hot drink abd some salted caramel brownies helped out.

User

This was my first experience of the markets. I was blown away by the whole thing. The food was delicious and the people so friendly. This is going to be a regular Christmas outing for me. It was bloody marvellous

User

Really enjoyed the Christmas market. Went yesterday with my wife. some excellent stalls and so many nice choices of food and drink. Set in a good area too. not to big nor to small. Will visit again for sure

User

Love love love Manchester Christmas markets, they never fail to disappoint year after year and are so enchanting! A huge credit to the city and are a must see for us each festive season.

User

Had a lovely time on the Christmas market on Tuesday night with my girlfriend. Felt very safe as security where friendly and put people at ease. Some great stalls for, food, drink and lots of Christmas ornaments etc. Well worth a trip.

User

Had A lovely visit, wandering all round nearly every street, with my wife, found it to be a bit pricey, but hey ho, a lot of wonderful efforts have gone into making this a special event for everyone

User

Always love visiting the christmas markets, we all go as a family with the kids and take them ice skating gets us really in the festive mood but then love going adults only too and enjoying several mulled wines and yummy food! Roll on next year

User

A fantastic day. Drank plenty of mulled wine and hot chocolate with rum. And if the bratwurst and snitzels weren't enough, there were PLENTY of cheese stalls offering FREE samples...and yes, we DID actually purchase the cheese on offer, which is very rare.

We visited yesterday, lucky the weather was sunny but cold. Wasn't too busy which was nice. The food was lovely we bought one of everything and shared it as it is a little pricy but you get huge portions to be fair. A lot of the stalls were very the same which was disappointing. And I sort of thought there would be a Santa's grotto for my son. But all in all it does have some lovely gift ideas. And the food is amazing.

User

Good atmosphere.. good selection of food and drinks and crafted bits etc, some free food and drink tasters .. needs a bit more variety and the prices are generally high.. it can be busy and very crowded

User

Didn't seem to be anything new this year, but most of our favourites were still there German Bratwurst, Italian biscuits, and Belgian chocolate. The strudel stall had run out of Apple strudel, so had to make do with Cherry.

User

Christmas markets are now getting to be very much the same as the next one. Prices are a little high but you expect that. What made it this year was that it snowed while we were there. The best thing was the different flavoured mulled wine.

User

What's nice: loads of stalls spread out to keep crowds spread out. Lots of eating options though many repititive. Prices same, but helps spreading the crowds again. Mostly sweet stuff. Suppose that's the season.

What's not so nice: we popped over many of the groups of stalls. All selling same stuff. Hardly any niche stalls. A bit disappointed to find mostly mass produced things.

Overall, a bit underwhelmed. Not sure what makes this unique?

User

Travelled all the way from Wakefield, was disappointed as biggest majority of stalls were selling the same things we enjoyed the only stall selling Spanish food, yummy big chorizo in a huge hot dog roll with onions & bravas with delicious tomato sauce ( tasted a very nice Rijoca red wine big 5 star to these guys. Would not rush back in a hurry next year.

User

The biggest xmas markets in years...my arse!!..stalls were far too repetitive lacking in creativity and possibly the worst Manchester xmas markets I've been too for years! Somebody ordered a few containers full of the same crap from China...disappointed

User

OK. Attractive, but too many chalets selling the same thing across the various market sites and not as much variety of different goods and independent traders as there used to be. Wished there was more handmade instead of mass produced goods.

User

Nice place lovely Christmas feeling just a shame it's spoilt by, extortionate prices for a pint or mulled wine, then topped off with a half mile trek for a piss.
