“I am determined to unmask the villains that send out seamen to death and destruction!” This weekend marks the anniversary of a significant date for the safety of seafarers. On 22 July 1875 Samuel Plimsoll lost his composure and his temper in the House of Commons, demanding better standards for ships, which were often dangerously overloaded at the time. This unusual outburst eventually led to the adoption of the Plimsoll Line and a reduction in the number of deaths at sea. Read all about it, and how it is commemorated in our collection, on the blog: http://blog.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/…/c ommemorating-an-mps…/

Have you ever been tempted by a brand name fashion item which seems like a bargain, but the price is too good to be true? Beware that you don't buy a fake, as these items might look convincing but they are often poor quality and could even be dangerous. The profits from these counterfeit goods is often used to fund other serious organised crime as well. Our brand (no pun intended) new display highlights the issue with a range of goods which were recently seized at Heathrow by Border Force officers. Sarah Han, education manager at Seized! "One of the great things I believe history can do is put a human face on events. Perhaps instead of being frightened by fleeing people we could all take a moment to picture those on board the City of Benares. Small children from Liverpool/ London/ Sunderland and other British cities, elderly couples fleeing for their lives, a pacifist critic of Hitler seeking safety for himself and his wife. Most of these people never found the refuge they were seeking."
For Refugee Week we take a look at the story of British child refugees facing a dangerous journey during the Second World War, and the parallels with present day refugees, on the blog: http://blog.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/…/b ritish-child-refuge…/

We were there yesterday visiting the Siezed! exhibition. The lady in the reception area was showing siezed items. There was a bag made from a crocodile with head and feet attached, a tusk carved into line of elephants and several other items. She was there to educate people on the subject. She was great and it was fascinating. We had a great time at the exhibition and rounded it off with a cup of tea in the cafe. Highly recommend it here.

The gift shop was very expensive though....so bought nothing there.

We visited the museum yesterday and loved it. This morning we did the Old Dock Tour, this was fascinating, the two tour guides had a wealth of information. I can not recommend this tour enough, loved it.

User

Was not sure what to expect as generally not interested in sea faring but I was attracted to the Slavery Museum with the Blood and Ink exhibition, which was really informative and moving. Also enjoyed the Lusitania and Titanic exhibitions. The Black Salt exhibition about black seamen was also really interesting. Spent 3 hours here and would go back. Tried to visit the Restaurant, but it was closed for an event, so went to the cafe instead and sat outside looking across the Albert Dock. A very enjoyable morning.

User

To say that the museum entry is free of charge, the exhibits are exceptional. Would definitely recommending dining on the top floor: great food and great service :)

User

This is my most favourite museum in Liverpool, no matter how many times you walk through the door it just amazes me. My kids absolutely love it, there favourite bit is going under the ship to see how they slept on board

User

Such an interesting museum. Very moving. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

User

Our first visit to MMM, my young daughter loved the museum. Lots to do and see on every floor. We will definately be back again.. The staff are very helpful and a credit to the museum.

User

MMM's my favourite maritime museum in the world. And I've been to a lot. When the Black Salt exhibition opens tomorrow (29 Sept 2017) it will be so exciting because it's the first time any UK maritime museum has done a full exhibition about Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) seafarers.

As someone who writes about 'minorities' like women and LGBTQI sailors (and as the proud descendent of a Scouse stewardess and ship's barber) I'm so pleased MMM has put this exhibition on -- again championing the overlooked people in maritime life.

I'm looking forward to this related talk this Sunday by Charles Foy on 18C black seafarers - and to all the subsequent events too.

User

Loved it. Visited Liverpool for the day and this meseum made it that much better. Definitely recommend

Went to see the Ink and Blood exhibition as part of the (transatlantic) slavery show which I'd wanted to see for awhile; and it was engrossing. All the displays are very well put together and thought provoking. The top floor has a restaurant/cafe and it is worth going for the views. The museum loses a point for it's toilets however (I give them one point). The ladies were not in a good state and neither were the mens according to my husband. I know this was later in the afternoon. But a clean mid-day might help?
