Seasonal tips #8. Batteries tend to be maintenance-free, but if the battery is struggling to turn the engine over you may have to replace it. Failure to do so when it packs in altogether it’ll leave you stranded. Don’t leave it to late.

Seasonal tips #7. If your wiper blades or washers fail you could be left driving blind. It’s often advised replacing the wiper blades every 12 months but keeping the blades clean will help them have a longer life span. Don’t start the wipers on a frozen screen, the ice will rip the rubber. Make sure your screen wash is at the right strength. 1 part water to 1 part screen wash in summer and 1 part water to 9 parts screen wash in the colder months to stop the chances of it freezing.

Seasonal tips #6. Icy conditions on the roads makes an efficient braking system even more important than ever. Check your brake fluid level , most vehicles will warn you if it’s low. Expect the level to drop a little as the brakes wear but never below the minimum level marked on the reservoir. If it does your brakes pads or shoes could be worn out, or there might be a leak on the system.

Seasonal tips #5. You may not consider that you power steering isn’t critical during the cold but snow and ice can cause steering problems. Check your power steering fluid level regularly and the power steering belt if your car has a mechanical pump.

Seasonal Tips #4. To stop your engine overheating the radiator must be filled with coolant. An engine shouldn’t use coolant at a rate; if the level drops these’s a problem. Every few years the coolant should be replaced.

Seasonal Tips #3. Engine need to be topped up with oil sometimes; make sure the level doesn’t drop to a point where damage is caused. By the time the oil light illuminates in the dash the damage may already have been done. Regular services help prevent the chances of that happening.

Seasonal tips #2. Everything your car does from accelerating to braking to cornering depends on the grip provided by those four patches of rubber in contact with the ground. The difference between 3mm and 1.6mm on a car travelling at 70mph is a further 37metres stopping distance! Give them a quick look over.

Seasonal Tips #1 To help you be seen and so you can see, check them every week; with a mate it’ll take just a couple of minutes. Don’t forget the brake lights, indicators, headlights, side lights, fog lights, number plate and reverse lights. Be safe, be seen!

What a great garage. I recently moved to the Southwest, however my car needed work doing to it so I left it. Oakwell picked up for me repaired it, mot it for a very reasonable price. Kept the car until I came back up to get it yesterday. Drove home no problems. Thanks guys

Recently the garage managed to fit my car in for some work at very short notice which meant that I was able to be mobile again to make funeral arrangements. I have been using Oakwell for 13 years now for all my cars. When I first used them I was worried as a single lady that I may get ripped off as I was new to the area. They have been wonderful, honest & reliable every time. I wouldn't go anywhere else.
