Orchard Greenery

A new week looms and although the weather is looking a bit wet over the next few days, Orchard will be well stocked for all your fruit and veg needs. More products are being sourced locally which helps prices - new potatoes are plentiful (Jersey, Cyprus and the local Maris Bard variety) though old potatoes are a little pricier.
Stoned fruits are now in abundances: plums, cherries, flat peaches, nectarines and apricots. We should also be getting the first pick of the Cheshire Gooseberries from Winsor's Farms in the middle of next week. Also lots of local grown products such as cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce tomatoes and celery are now available.
Enjoy - please do ring the shop first and check with Row what's available to avoid disappointment. We can usually order in for next day anything we don't have.

Thought you might be interested in how the supply works, we keep a close eye on provision of stock in conjunction with our suppliers.
At the moment there is short supply on some fruit and veg, a combination of poor weather conditions in the EU and Africa and a slow start to the UK produce season. Bramley apples are tricky at the moment, more demand than supply. Same is true of potatoes with the exception of Jersey Royals which are now falling in price. We're also seeing the s...tart of the Cornish new potato crop.
UK-wise Lollo Rosso, oakleaf, iceberg and romaine lettuce are all readily available and Blackpool tomatoes are well underway, along with English cucumbers. The UK strawberry season should be underway in the next week or so, followed by raspberries. The recent good weather has boosted produce of fresh corn on the cob too.
Spanish peaches and nectarines were looking good but have halted following days of heavy rain in Spain. Supplies should restart in the next week.

Who has enjoyed their lunch outside today? I devoured this salad consisting of mixed lettuce, cucumber, tomato, celery, spring onion, chopped mango and satsuma plus a few slices of chicken in my garden today. No oil, just squeezed the satsuma juice all over.

Hidden veg sauce is ideal base for so many dishes and it very simple (and cheap!) to make: Saut├® 500g mushrooms in 3 cloves of garlic. When soft, grate in carrot and stir occasionally for 5 mins. Meanwhile halve 10 or more tomatoes, slice one red onion and chop up other veg like aubergine, peppers or courgette but these are optional and place in roasting dish. Drizzle with oil and a few lugs of balsamic vinegar. Roast in oven at 180 degrees for 45 mins. I chose to mix every...thing together and blended the lot! Leave to cool then pour into different sized containers. Use this sauce as a base for family meals like lasagne, chilli, spag bol or pizza base. You can add tuna, cooked chicken to have with pasta and rice. Season with oregano or chilli or whatever herbs you like. Add yoghurt or creme fraiche if you prefer a creamy sauce. I filled 13 containers and put in freezer. Ingredients cost me less than ┬Ż5 from Orchard Greenery!
