Ribble Steam Railway & Museum Description

Hidden away in the heart of Preston’s old Industrial Docklands, Ribble Steam Railway has itself been greeting visitors since 2005. Whatever the weather, you can expect a warm and friendly welcome from Ribble Steam’s team of committed volunteers. Whether you are a keen steam enthusiast, or just simply looking for a fun and relaxed day out, Ribble Steam offers a memorable experience of Lancashire’s world famous Industrial heritage. Visit the museum discover the history of Preston docks and the story of the first electric trains. Did you know Preston once had a key role in designing and building trains, close to docks, that were then exported all over the World.
There is always much to explore in the “hands on” museum, complete with a fabulous indoor miniature railway for young hearts. You may be curious about the “engineering goings on” in the workshops. Watch treasured industrial engines and locomotives lovingly being restored, behind the scenes. Remember to check out the RSR shop to find that special visit memento, present, specialist publication or popular railway character memorabilia. Look out for art activities, special events, such as Steam or Diesel Galas, and exhibitions, Friendly Engines, Family Fun on our Teddy Bears Specials, Classic Car Day on Father's Day, Model Tramways weekend and our Fabulous Santa Specials.

It's our annual autumn festival of steam and rail at Ribble Steam Railway on September 29th and 30th. This exciting celebration sees steam trains running every forty five minutes from 11am.
Stars of the Show:
Illingworth - Visiting from Embsay and Bolton Abbey Railway! This 1916 machine is newly restored, and is sure to be the star of this event. Illingworth features on most trains, so you're bound to get a ride behind her.
... Grant Richie 272 - Returning from a summer at Telford Steam Railway, this Victorian locomotive is the sole survivor from her class, and is well worth a look!
Linda - Our stalwart blue tank engine has done the lion's share of our work this season. Come and see this Hawthorne Leslie machine plying the trade.
Courageous - Returning to service at Ribble Steam Railway after a summer of maintenance work, this engine completes the line-up, and has always been a favorite for visitors & members.

Yesterday we took our train obsessed 2.5 year old son and our 11 week old daughter on the Santa special. We couldn't have asked for more! The whole experience was magical; very well organised and very unique. The staff were all friendly, helpful and smiling. There was plenty to do prior to the train ride in terms of engines to look at and explore and games/toys for the kids. Facilities were clean and well catered. The actual train ride was brilliant- greeted onboard with a mince pie or biscuit, sherry or juice. Joined in with some festive entertainment and then visited by SANTA, in our seats. Our son loved this. Even more so when he was given a very good quality present. We will now be making it an annual tradition. So pleased we found this gem! Thank you all x

User

We.called in on Sunday and were very pleased to see how busy it was. There is plenty to see and do there. We had a great time.

User

We took our 3 children yesterday and they loved searching for all the eggs, looking around at all the trains and riding the train. Fun day all round:) very friendly staff too x

User

We had a wonderful afternoon on the Santa special yesterday, loved the museum (vowed to go back when it isn't as busy!) And the ride was brilliant, all the staff were just so friendly and cheerful (I can't imagine how many times they had done the trip before ours but we were made to feel like this was the first one) the singing was great fun and I do believe the big guys beard was 100% real! Great gift for our toddler who's favourite part was the little wooden train set in the play area This might have to be a Christmas tradition. Thank you!

User

Took my 3 yr old son yesterday and he really enjoyed it. Very reasonably priced, you can ride the train as many times as you like, we went on it twice. There are activities for the children and plenty to see. We spent 3.5 hrs there. The cafe is cheap and the food is good quality. No trip is complete without going to the gift shop, I was surprised how reasonably priced it was, so we came away with a few things. Definitely worth it, especially as we live so close. Will be going for the Santa visit in December.

User

Thoroughly enjoyed this with my 3 year old son! He was memorized by all the big trains. Especially being able to go in them and blow the whistle. The staff were very helpful and friendly too! Will definitely be returning! Little boy kept asking to go back after we had gone

User

This is a fantastic place. My son had a brilliant time and could of easily spent the whole day here. There isn't much in the cafe for people with food allergies or intolerances. But given that the place is run by volunteers it is excellent and we will be coming back.

User

My sons and I have visited twice now, and it's a splendid place to spend an afternoon. The standing exhibits are interesting and informative, the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Then we have a coffee while we wait for the next train to depart... And before we leave, we have to head to the workshop to check out the works in progress. And prise me out of the shop!

User

Lived in preston my entire life and ive only just managed to visit this jewl of preston , i have had an amazing day!

Would love to have a proper guided tour of the work shop, and would love to travel up line into preston station and back now that would be special!

You really do need more line under your belt! But still truely amazing day!

User

Had a great day here with my grandson so much to do. My grandson was so excited as he climb up onto the large engines. Would recommend this to friends and family for a day out

User

Great place, but check the times for the actual steam trains on the day, arrived at 2pm and just missed the last one! Still had a good time!!

User

Great day out- lovely to see steam trains in the museum and being worked on in the workshop and then you can ride on the train as many times as you want. We will definitely come back!

User

Excellent day and l even got in the train carriage in the wheelchair it made the day for me.

User

Excellent afternoon here, with trips on the line, workshops and loco shed. Great photo opportunity..

Been numerous times to the museum and for the events (Mothers Day, Diesel Gala, Friendly faces etc) all the staff we have come across have always friendly and chatty. Toilets always super clean and there is a toddler toilet step and training seat on the wall which I thought was fab. When you go into the actual museum there is a children's area where kids can do 'rubbings' of trains and put them on the wall, some play equipment and soft train to sit on, there is also a quiz for kids to do as they walk round. Inside there is a mini train kids and go on and further round a signal man game and model railway track that you can press buttons to set it off. The trains always look clean and they do change the train stock they have in there so you are not always looking at the same things on another visit. The train ride isn't a scenic one, as the Railway itself is not in the countryside but you do go past a marina and over the river which is pretty interesting. I'm pretty sure that when we went on Mother's Day it was a longer train ride - I've seen the Santa Specials are advertised as a longer ride too so not sure if this is only at certain events. Great service in the cafe and the gift shop, neither are overpriced and there is plenty over little mementos to buy (printed stationary key rings, torches etc between 60p and a couple of quid) my kids like having something to remember a day out and this sort of stuff I don't mind buying. All in all - if you like trains or have kids that do this is a good trip out, you probably wouldn't be there all day, but you can certainly have a good morning or afternoon there.

User

A very enjoyable day out was had by myself the wife & 3 grandchildren, all staff very polite & helpful. The eldest granddaughter who has never been to a railway museum before enjoyed it that much she would love to return for her birthday. We will be visiting again hopefully very soon .

User

A massive thank you to the guys, Especially Howard for showing us around. My son loved it all and was very taken with the workshops!

User

We visited yesterday to do the special santa train ride we were all really looking forward to it. We travelled for just over an hour to get there and i have to say we were really disappointed we sat on the 1st table in coach D, santa appeared and handed out presents to our 3 children, whilst there was a little festive music played we had some biscuits and a drink. It was all over in a flash. We expected to see a little bit if countryside as per the pictures on the website but really we were just alongside some traffic in the middle of preston! Absolutely awful, if your looking for a magical experience for your children then this certainly isnt it.
