Royal Liver Building Centenary - 1911 To 2011 Description

In 1907, with almost 5, 000 staff, Royal Liver needed larger premises and at its Annual General Meeting in Dublin, approval was given to build a new head office – the world-famous Royal Liver Building. The foundation stone was laid on May 11, 1908 and the building was opened by Lord Sheffield – a senior Trustee – on July 19, 1911.

This page is a chance for locals and people from far and wide to share any memories, photos or artefacts you have associated with the building.

Centenary Exhibition 2011:
Liverpool’s iconic Royal Liver Building will open its doors to the public during a first of its kind exhibition due to take place this summer, between 19-24 July, 10am - 6pm.

Visitors can look forward to seeing attractions including a recreation the celebrated Grade II Listed Board Room, the original plans for the building, photographs dating back to its opening and much more.

The decision was taken by Royal Liver Friendly Society to create the Royal Liver Building at its 1907 Annual General Meeting held in Dublin. 12 months later in May, 1908 work had progressed to such an extent that the Foundation Stone could be laid. This Ceremony was attended by a host of local civic dignitaries including the Lord Mayor of Liverpool (Dr Caton). The key decision-makers in relation to the creation of the Liver Building - the Directors and the Delegates (voting m...embers) - were also in attendance and the names of the Board of Directors at the time (1908) continue to live on by their clear presence on the Foundation Stone (still visible at the Ground Floor West Entrance to the Building). Some of these names have found their way into Royal Liver Friendly Society folk-lore - Samuel Skelton and Frank H Taunton to mention but two. I am hoping to tell their story and much more via this Site and other media over the coming years.

Some co-members of this Site have rightly remarked that the Royal Liver Building is "priceless". I'm sure in many respects that is true. There can be no doubt that Royal Liver Friendly Society - the Building's creators - must have been immensely proud of the Building when it was first erected and opened in the summer of 1911. This Commemorative Brochure issued by the Directors of Royal Liver at the time (1911) refers to the Liver Building as the "Palace on the Pier Head" and commented with obvious pride that ".... With its huge bulk, stately elevation, and cloud-piercing towers, it has emphatically transformed and ennobled the City's riverfront." The language and syntax is near-Dickensian but the sentiment still rings true.

It seems this is where it all began for the Royal Liver Building. This site, George's Dock, was purchased by Royal Liver Friendly Society from Liverpool City Council around 1906 for just £75,000. Royal Liver Friendly Society, the creators and original owners of the Liver Building, then proceeded with their plans for the Building which was completed a few years later in 1911 at an original cost/value of circa £450,000. It is estimated that the Building is now worth, over 100 years later, around £50 million.

With grateful thanks to Kevin Sartorius from another FB Site. The floodlighting shows the granite cladding (from Scottish and Norwegian Quarries) off to best advantage.

The fours dials of ‘The Great George’, which are situated 220 feet above the ground, each have a diameter of 25 feet (2 ½ feet wider than the dials of Big Ben) and each minute hand is an impressive 14 feet long.

Carl Bernard Bartels is the father of the Liver Birds. This quiet woodcarver from South West Germany won an international competition to create the iconic images.
