Saddleworth St Chad Description

History: There has been a place of Christian worship on the Parish Church site since 1215 AD, when the first Saddleworth Church was established as a chapel of ease as part of the Rochdale Parish, but in time became the possession of Whalley Abbey. Under the suppression of the churches by Henry VIII, the Abbey had to submit ‘Quick Chapel’, as it was then called, to the jurisdiction of Rochdale and more recently in 1866, patronage was transferred to the Bishop of Manchester.

The current grade 2* listed re-build, which stands in it's own conservation area, is late Georgian. The interior, which includes the original gallery, has a pleasant warmth to it emanating a surprising light and colour. The stained glass tells the tale of the wildness of the weather in this location, though the church does possess a fine Capronier depiction of the Visit of the Magi.

The parish has two other worship centres:
Kilngreen Mission Church, situated in Diggle, was originally established in 1785 as a non-denominational school funded by public subscription. This building was demolished in 1870 and replaced by the present building, again paid for by public subscription. Although built as a day school, it has been used for Sunday School for over 100 years under the Parish of St. Chad. The dual purpose building serves as church – with screened off sanctuary, added in the late 1950s – and community focus for many groups and events. It is also used on occasion for weddings, funerals and baptisms.

St. Chad's Parish Centre, Station Road, Uppermill, originally the Church day and Sunday school is situated in a conservation area. Since the 1970s a congregation and Sunday school have met there. The hall is also much used by community groups during the week and the Saddleworth Team Ministry office is also situated here.

24 June 2019 The Feast of John the Baptist.
Over the centuries, the head of John the Baptist has ranked high on the list of the most sought-after relics in Christianity. The Jewish preacher and prophet, celebrated as one of the earliest Christian saints, is believed to have paved the way for his distant cousin, Jesus, whom John famously baptized in the Jordan River.
According to all four canonical gospels of the New Testament, as well as the account of the Jewish historian Josephus, John the Baptist was killed on the orders of a local ruler sometime before Jesus’ crucifixion. The gospels claim the king had him beheaded, and his head put on a platter. But no one gives any clue about where John the Baptist’s head—or the rest of his body—ended up.

Tomorrow is Trinity Sunday
There is One God, who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Other ways of referring to the Trinity are the Triune God and the Three-in-One. The Trinity is a controversial doctrine; many Christians admit they don't understand it, while many more Christians don't understand it but think they do.

Not long now...
Hail Smiling Morn! Hail smiling morn, smiling morn, That tips the hills with gold, that tips the hills with gold,... Whose rosy fingers ope the gates of day, Ope the gates, the gates of day, Hail! Hail! Hail! Hail! Who the gay face of nature doth unfold, At whose bright presence darkness flies away, flies away, Darkness flies away, darkness flies away, At whose bright presence darkness flies away, flies away, Hail! Hail! Hail! Hail! Hail! Hail! Hail! Hail!

And when the days of Pentecost were drawing to a close, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a violent wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues as of fire, which settled upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in foreign tongues, even as the Holy Spirit prompted them to speak (Acts 2, 1-4).

May 31st The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Visitation is the visit of St. Mary, who was pregnant with Jesus, to St. Elizabeth, who was pregnant with John the Baptist, as recorded in the Gospel of Luke, Luke 1:39–56.
