About Scott Cinemas - Exmouth

The Savoy is a 3-screen cinema in Exmouth, Devon operated by the Scott Cinemas group.

Scott Cinemas - Exmouth Description

This cinema is located within Savoy Buildings, a large public hall with various offices, a cafe, fully equipped stage, fly space, five dressing rooms, it was built during the Victorian era. It was in use as a cinema during the silent film era and a Mr Vint has been named as one of its proprietors. At some stage ownership passed to a Mr Bailey who also operated a cinema in Exeter. He commissioned the addition of a balcony in the auditorium in 1926 which brought the total capacity to just over 800. For many years the Cafe continued to function and was an area that patrons passed through to reach the balcony stairs although, as with many cinemas, it also had its own entrance through the centre doors of the main building.

Just post-war ownership passed to the Mayfair Circuit who apparently sold it on fairly quickly. Ownership then passed to the Hedges family, who operated the Savoy in conjunction with the 3 other cinemas in the town, The Regal, Forum and Kings (later Grand, later Royal. . ). In the early 1960’s they sold the business to Compton Cameo Films, under the direction of Tony Tenser, who were rapidly acquiring cinemas as outlets for their film productions. After a couple of years or so they sold on the lease to Mr C. C. W. Scott who was operating several other cinemas in Devon. He ran it until the early 80’s when the lease expired and the freehold had been purchased by a local developer. After some years in other use cinema was re-established in the building through a three-way contract between Mr. Dyer ( the developer), the local authority and Scott Cinemas.

One interesting note is that this cinema had a very narrow escape during World War Two, when a bomb fell through the roof close to the Rolle Street cinema cafe entrance. There were over 400 people in the cinema that evening but the bomb failed to detonate.

There is now nothing of the original interior design visible. . . the Screen 1 projection room is located within the former stage area, Screen 2 is underneath the balcony and Screen 3 occupies the old cafe. This is a compact, modern development within a Victorian building , which benefits from an excellent, central location facing a tranquil, tree-lined square.

The 3 screens all feature NEC 2k Digital projection and 6-channel sound, with Dolby 3D also available.

Whenever we go to the cinema, we always look up the listings here first. The main point of going here first is the price. The seating is comfortable and the staff are friendly which just adds to the overall experience.

We could go to Exeter and pay twice the price and be treated as anonymous customers but this cinema is great! Love the VIP seats at the back too.

User

Went to see pitch perfect 3 very funny. Staff very friendly didn't have to wait long to get our tickets. Cinema was clean so lucky to have a cinema in Exmouth.

User

Very pleased to enjoy a cider whilst watching Jurassic world last night, helpful and friendly staff ūüĎć

User

Really comfortable seats, worth laying a little extra for......but two bags of Malteasers £5.20! Really? This does not encourage repeat business for sweets and snacks.

User

Lovely staff, great seats & sound - we always enjoy watching films here.

User

Lovely new look, happy you still have your bargain Monday‚Äôs ūüĎć

User

Loved the new bar me and my wife a couple of G&Ts before enjoying Deadpool 2 good prices friendly staff.

User

Loved it. A little on the small side but found it comfortable. Staff friendly and helpful. Bargain prices on Monday. £4.49 basic seats, £4.99 Vip seats. Even normal prices are cheaper than the mainstream cinemas. Looks like it's a about to expand the foyer area to offer better and more items. Can only make it even better. Will definitely use again.

User

It was very clean and cosy, will definitely go again xxx

User

I loved all the facilities and amenities. The staff were very helpful and welcoming. It was a very enjoyable and comfortable evening.

User

I love the Scott Cinemas, such value for money whether it be the price of tickets or the yummy snacks, not sure why people still go and pay ridiculous prices at the other’s. The Savoy is a lovely cinema, staff are always friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend this place.

User

First visit to the cinema today. The lady on the desk was very helpful in helping us choose our seats as my partner has mobility problems. Enjoyed our visit, look forward to coming back soon.

Collateral Beauty 7/10 the narrative behind this film is a good idea however I feel that no one knows how someone else will react to a given situation when grieving for a young child, we simply dont know enough about the mechanisims of the brain yet.

It is beautifully shot and clever but no one should meddle with another persons emotions of grief even if their intentions are good because perhaps suicide, self harm and deep depression come into play, it is worth seeing as its very thought provoking....x

The cinema is lovely staff friendly often go here rather than the Vue as there you do feel herded in and out again...x*

User

Came to see La La Land on Sunday early evening. What a fabulous film! Loved every minute except for the two teenagers in the front row who were intent on disturbing the atmosphere getting up all the time, making noises and laughing in quiet moments. Until I asked if they would like to be kicked out! Its a shame these people go and pay for a ticket and ruin it for others. However, the film was brilliant! The staff were friendly and very informative. Love the seats, but missed the cup holders for my hot coffee! Will definitely be returning.

User

Always enjoy our night at the Savoy Such lovely staff and atmosphere Totally recommend it

User

The only thing I was disappointed about was the lack of hot food like hot dogs, which u get in a lot of cinemas but everything else was great and really like the cinema.

User

It's a lovely little cinema with fantastic friendly staff that show you to your seats. Sound and screen are good. My only reason for not giving it 5* is leg room even in the premier seats it can get very uncomfortable, although it can be quite amusing watching how other people squirm to get comfy whilst trying to not attract attention!! But if you go on fiver Mondays then a little discomfort is ok to put up with for an hour and a half!!

User

Went to watch Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them on Tuesday 13th Dec. Loved the film! But didn't love the freezing cold cinema brrrrrrrrr had my coat on the whole time and was still freezing. Told the staff and they were really polite and said to mention it next time we come. Fingers crossed it won't be as cold next time.

User

Seat was very uncomfortable otherwise ok
