*UPDATE - SKIPTON CHRISTMAS MARKET - SUNDAY 8TH DECEMBER*
The Skipton Christmas Market is STILL GOING AHEAD this Sunday 8th December, however we have had to reduce the number of stalls we have at the event for health and safety reasons.
The Met Office have predicted gusts of winds up to 45 mph and unfortunately this poses a health and safety hazard for some of the gazebos. Ultimately the health and safety of attendees, stall holders and staff has to come first. This is not an... easy decision and is not one that has been taken lightly.
All the planned entertainment, food and drink stalls and market stalls located on the setts will still be going ahead as planned. The Farmers and Craft Market at the Canal Basin is also still going ahead.
Plus, of course, all of our wonderful local shops, cafes and restaurants will be open as normal!!
We hope to see you all Sunday!

Today's Craven Herald includes a lovely tribute to our former Town Mayor, Councillor Martin Emmerson who, very sadly, passed away suddenly last weekend. It goes without saying that the thoughts of everyone at the Council - Members and staff - have been very much with Martin's family this week.

Tomorrow (Saturday) is Skipton Gala Day. This event has taken place every June for around 120 years, so is part of our town's heritage. As usual, the Gala procession will head through the town centre - starting at 1pm from Westmoreland Street before heading along Sackville Street, Keighley Road, up the High Street, over Mill Bridge onto Water Street, Gargrave Road and into Aireville Park. Many of these roads, and other surrounding roads, will be closed to traffic during the procession and there WILL undoubtedly be delays across the whole of the town centre between 1pm and 2pm. Please try to find an alternative route - and PLEASE be patient. Roads will be opened up again as soon as it is safe to do so. Thank you!

There will be a short D-Day commemoration at 11am this morning at the War Memorial on Skipton High Street - organised by the Skipton Branch of the Royal British Legion. The Mayor of Skipton will lay a wreath on behalf of the Town - alongside the Chairman of the District Council and a number of D-day veterans. To enable veterans and others to safely reach the War Memorial, some traffic management measures may need to be put in place for a short period. Please be patient and respectful of the occasion. Thank you.

This Thursday, 2nd May 2019, elections are taking place for all 16 seats on Skipton Town Council. You should have received your polling card in the last couple of weeks. Polling Stations are open from 7am to 10pm. You have FOUR votes in the Town Council election, so you may vote for up to a maximum of four candidates standing in your ward. The Town Council elections are taking place alongside elections for Craven District Council - so you will also be able to vote for ONE candidate in the District election. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU NEED TO TAKE SOME FORM OF ID WITH YOU TO THE POLLING STATION. A photocard driving licence or passport is fine. PLEASE USE YOUR VOTES!

Just a quick reminder that this afternoon is the South Craven District Scouts St George's Day Parade in Skipton. It starts at around 2.30pm and, as a result, some roads in the centre of town, including the High Street will be closed to traffic for a short period. We will keep the closures as short as possible - but would ask that you are patient and support our young people in what is a very important event for them. All roads should be fully open again by 3pm.
