You might remember that we asked you to nominate people to win SPAR's People's Podium prize over the summer. Well the first runner up winner has now been announced 🙌 Read more about Ross's story below 👇
Meet the inspiring Ross Broadbent, owner of Blacon Boxing Club and 2019 People’s Podium runner-up.
... “I always wanted to get a boxing gym when I got a bit older. I started [Blacon] about three years ago, at a time when the council estate needed it. Kids were on computers, kids were on phones and we needed to get them active and it’s just gone from strength-to-strength.”
After seeing the changes in the children’s behaviour after training, Ross and his team of 13 volunteers were invited to house their club in the local school. “The school’s motto is exactly the same as my motto, which is basically ‘why shouldn’t our kids have the same opportunities as any other kids from any other area?’”
Entry costs £1 and the 300 members from the neighbouring estate train with Ross and his team. The commitment to helping these children succeed means a six day week for Ross and his volunteers, but it’s worth it for the results, seeing kids become focused and confident.
“Some people are a bit negative about teaching kids to punch and fight but it’s the complete opposite. None of my kids are getting into trouble at school, the teachers have never come up to me to say that one of my kids has had a fight. They’re actually role models.”
The prize money from the People’s Podium is going to help Ross reach his dream of building a new facility for the children to help start turning their devoted boxing community into champions.
