22nd March 1968. A special date. The date the first kidney transplant at MRI took place. 50 years on and over 6500 kidney transplants later the MRI is the largest transplant unit in Europe.
Yet whilst the advances in transplant and treatment for kidney disease over the past 50 years have been immense there is still so much more research needed.
Research that Kidneys for Life want to fund. Projects at Salford Royal, MRI and Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital that Kidneys fo...r Life want to fund.
So whilst we want to shout about the advances over the past 50 years it’s only with your help, by taking part in a fundraising event, hosting your own event, donating raffle prizes or even by sharing this post to friends and work colleagues that we can do all we can to reach more people with kidney disease.

On Friday 9th March, Janet, our Complementary Therapy Lead Practitioner, and Barbara, one of our volunteers, attended Xaverian Sixth Form College in Manchester. They delivered a talk and presentation on Complementary Therapies to the students studying Health and Social Care as they were covering this as a module as part of their course.
"It was a presentation about Complementary Therapies and their place in Clinical settings. Complementary Therapies can be beneficial for all ...types of medical conditions whether physiological or psychological. There has been lots of research and evidence that therapies can work in clinical settings alongside patients and staff alike. If we can perform our therapies to improve the quality of life of patients just a little then it would be huge help to the patients, carers and their families" said Janet.
Complementary therapies can provide a much needed service to patients. Nurses are hugely dedicated to their patients but therapies can be a way for the patients to offload their troubles and it can help de-stress the patient.
"The students thoroughly enjoyed the talk as they had little knowledge of Complementary Therapies."
Thank you Xaveria Sixth Form College! 😀

A message from Kidneys for Life on #WorldKidneyDay:
Kidneys for Life are hosting a stall at Salford Royal on Thursday 8th March - World Kidney Day.
It’s such an important day to highlight the impact of Kidney disease, the research that Kidneys for Life fund and also to celebrate how much progress has been made since the first kidney transplant in Manchester back in 1968.
... Those who live with Renal disease, and their families, are acutely aware of the impact of Chronic Kidney disease. World Kidney Day is the opportunity for Kidneys for Life to work together with other organisations at Salford, including Hope KPA and Organ Donation, to really bring to Kidney disease into the public domain.
Do come and visit our stall, pick up a copy of our newsletter to hear about some of the projects that we have funded and also find out about the various different ways that you can get involved with Kidneys for Life.
Funds that are raised at Salford Royal for Kidneys for Life will go to fund projects at the Salford Royal. In the past year we have provided training courses for Salford nurses, chairs for patients up on H3 and also provided Infrared machines for use on the Dialysis ward. Over the coming year we are looking to provide funds to support for projects, such as peer support, as well as other programmes and equipment for Salford Royal patients and families that would not be funded by the NHS.
Your support means so much to us and the Renal patients at Salford Royal so if you are unable to see us on 8th March but would like to donate to Kidneys for Life please visit our fundraising page:
