About St James & Emmanuel, Didsbury

We are a vibrant parish of two churches with a communal life built around worship, fellowship and mission. We are fully inclusive of LGBT members.

St James & Emmanuel, Didsbury Description

St James & Emmanuel has been shaped by its history. When the two Anglican churches of St James and Emmanuel united in 1981 it created a diverse Christian community.

We value and treasure our ‘diversity’. Our diversity enables people with different personalities, experiences, and backgrounds to find a place to belong.

We value and treasure ‘belonging’. From a place of belonging we find ourselves on a journey of discovery and growth in faith. From Sunday services and mid-week groups through to courses and our church school we nurture the journey of faith in Jesus.

We value and treasure ‘believing’. The journey of faith in Jesus is exciting, transforming and challenging. As we journey toward God we find that we respond creatively by expressing and sharing the love of God through local and international projects, the arts, and community involvement.

We value and treasure the journey of ‘becoming’. Our shared values enable our church to become the tree Jesus talked about in his parable; a place where people can shelter in its branches, experience the transforming power of God’s love and take this message out to the world.

'Places of Welcome' Comes to Emmanuel!
The Parochial Church Council is eager to promote the mental well-being of the community and are particularly keen to join a network called ‘Places of Welcome’. Places of Welcome have five stated goals:
1. A safe hospitable building... 2. A place open to all 3. A place of active listening 4. A free tea and a biscuit and... 5. A place where everyone can contribute.
We will be hosting a new 'Place of Welcome' in the Home Café area of Emmanuel on Sundays between 1.30pm and 3.30pm with a view to providing a welcoming and warm atmosphere of acceptance, hospitality and companionship.
We are looking for volunteers to help form a rota so that we can provide this on a regular basis. Volunteers will need to understand a few basic foundational principles and to have an open and warm disposition. We aim to offer complementary beverages, and optional social activities.
If you can identify with any of these aims and want to know more please come for an informal chat with Nick Bundock, Ann McPartland or Linda Fildes.
We may arrange an informal get together with interested people prior to opening on Sunday 9th February.

We are marking Holocaust Memorial Day on Sunday 26th January at the Emmanuel 6.15 service. We have a special invited guest speaker David Arnold. To accommodate our Jewish speaker we will be changing the service from evening communion to evening prayer. This Sunday morning children can come dressed as nativity characters (or in fact anything they like), while parents/carers are welcome to dress up or wear a Christmas jumper for our annual Scratch Nativity in Emmanuel at 10.30. It's a united service so there will be no St James at 10.30. It's good fun, we'll sing some carols and it's a relaxed and happy way to start Christmas week.
