In the Easter story Christians believe that we see most clearly the depth of God's love for the world, including every single person alive today. Christ becomes weak, vulnerable, defenceless, bears the weight of the power of evil, death itself, and through this sacrifice Hell is shattered, and we have hope. On Easter Day we celebrate the heart of our faith - He is risen from the dead, and if that is true, it changes everything, for everyone. We continue to encounter God at work, in our community, through the Holy Spirit Jesus breathes into our lives. The best way of exploring the story is to worship with others, entering into a mystery that changed history. Come and find out more, beginning Sunday 14th April, and then every day this week, leading to 10am Easter Day, 21st April: http://www.stjohnthedivinepemberton.co.uk

This week Lent begins, on Ash Wednesday, 6th March. Lots of people give things up for Lent, but what's the point?
It's all about getting ready to celebrate Easter, which falls this year on Sunday 21st April. Beginning by remembering Jesus' 40 days of preparation for his public ministry, when he went into the desert and wrestled with temptation and distractions. Fasting, eating simply, helps us focus, and recognise how dependent we are on things that won't last. Sundays aren't... included in the count, because every Sunday is a feast day, when we celebrate Christ making a new Creation, restoring us. If you don't believe us, do the maths!
As Easter gets closer we re-live the story of how God revealed what Love truly is. We slow down to really hear and taste how much God cares for us all, the events that lead up to Good Friday. The innocent man Jesus was crucified, and so God overcame Death, and healed us.
So, whoever you are, however close or distant you feel from God, use the opportunity of this Lent to make a change in your life. At 8am and 7.30pm on Wednesday 6th March you are welcome to join us at St John's Church, as we receive the sign of the cross, in ashes. 'Dust you are, and to dust you shall return'. But God has been down in the dust too, and our hope is in Him.
During Lent you will always be welcome at St John's, Pemberton, whatever you believe, and whatever you have done.
